By: Worth Scott Late in 2022 we received our final certificate of occupancy in Bend, the overall scope. The addition was completed and the renovation was Oregon to wrap up an incredibly successful project. The job was first well on its way when Mark decided he was ready to step back into brought to us by Amsurg to see if we were interested in 2019. Our retirement. Around the same time, we were fortunate to have Charles interest was questionable considering there are 2,238 miles separating Draper reach out to us about employment. Charles came from a trade Nashville and Bend. We have worked for Amsurg for more than 20 partner on the job and thankfully saw opportunity to grow his career with years and could not be more thankful for our relationship, but this was us. With Charles hired as an assistant superintendent, Dan Harris was new territory. We have been partners on many projects and considering able to step up, take the lead role and finish the project. On the tail end the distance and unfamiliar design team on this one the corporate team of the project Steve Bongiovanni thankfully fulfilled a project at Amsurg preferred us on the job. While this seemed like a slam dunk, management void and has done an outstanding job stepping in and we had a lot of work to do inserting ourselves into a market and region finishing the job. that we did not have much experience. We all knew there was going to But there is more to the story……It's hard not to mention to folks that we be risk involved on a project of this size so far away. were working in Oregon. It was different and fun to talk about. Quickly, Herb Seloff, Mike Ford, Shawn Dickenson, and then entire preconstruction team put together an outstanding RFP response for the job and we were excitingly awarded. In due time, we went to contract for the core and shell project and knew we would finalize the contract for the build-out with Amsurg as the design was completed. As the entire job moved forward it became the largest Amsurg project we have built to date based on the size of 48,750 square feet and a price of $19,036,000. As we were finalizing and negotiating the contract, the pandemic was in full swing. We were all nervous and tentative if the job would actually push forward. We had other projects that had been shelved, paused, or reduced due to the economic factors of the pandemic on the business of healthcare. Herb Seloff and I flew to Oregon a couple times to interview subcontractors and prepare for construction. I remember being among very few passengers on the airplane and maybe the only guests in the hotel. We reserved an entire conference room to have interviews with just a couple of folks in order to keep our distance. In the midst of conversations with subcontractors and the design team, we continued to hear the name Mark Kneeshaw. He was a superintendent that had retired in the area. While we had a field team planned to travel in, it made good sense to reach out and interview Mark about running the project. Quickly, we could see Mark was an outstanding fit for Batten Shaw Construction and the project. At the same time, Dan Harris was finishing up a project in Nashville and stepped up to travel with his family across the country so he could be an assistant superintendent on the job. As things moved forward, we had assembled an "A Team". The project was a 2 story addition to the existing surgery center, but it continued to grow and a renovation of the existing space was added to

we heard from another legacy client in LifePoint there was a project in McMinnville, OR we had an opportunity to compete for. Based on our knowledge and team, it was a quick decision to go for the job. In time, we were awarded the Willamette Cancer Center project and work is just now starting. Continuing on, we were approached by HCA to see if we were interested in a project in Anchorage, Alaska. While this is still a good distance from Bend or McMinnville, our ability to perform in the Pacific Northwest gave us the confidence to chase this project. We were awarded, and this project is expected to start in the next few months. Just like it's was interesting to mention we are working in Bend, we let clients know we have a project upcoming in Anchorage and have received another opportunity we are chasing down. Why does any of this matter? I think you can go back to the beginning and see we decided to take a good calculated risk, but that risk led to……. • • • • • • •

Our largest project with Amsurg A stable job in the middle of the pandemic Mark Kneeshaw joining our team Dan Harris growing from an Asst Superintendent to a Superintendent (Congrats Dan!) Charles Draper joining our team Willamette Project Award with LifePoint Anchorage Project Award with HCA I'm thankful for our Long Term Relationships with clients and our hard working employees that continue to take on a challenge turning it into new opportunities. I believe these are just a few examples of many positive outcomes stemming from the project in Oregon. Great job everyone!

AB C E X C E L L E N C E I N C O N S T R U C T I O N AW AR D Batten | Shaw Construction was awarded the ABC Excellence in Construction Award for the construction of the TOA Westlawn Medical Office Building. This 54,000 square feet, three story medical office building was constructed on 4 acres. Within the footprint of the building a full service rehabilitation center was constructed including an MRI, x-ray rooms, hand therapy, rehabilitation gym, and exam/procedure rooms. The exterior consisted of over 100,000 square feet of permeable pavers, four types of building cladding, and two entrance canopies. AG C B U I L D T E N N E S S E E AW AR D Batten | Shaw Construction received the AGC Build Tennessee Award for Vanderbilt—Ingram Cool Springs Breast and Cancer Center. Constructing a 15,000 square feet renovation in a fully operational facility presented multiple challenges including planning for a new air handling system coming on line in phases to ensure safe installation around a high risk patient population. Through planning in a team atmosphere (with the client, architect, staff, and trade partners) our team was able to successfully bring the project to completion.

Community Service Did you know that according to the latest study, 1 in 8 Middle and West Tennessee residents are food insecure? These individuals have limited access to enough food to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Our crew helped sort 8,004 pounds of food which equates to approximately 6,670 meals that will be distributed to those affected by food insecurity.
