In 2008, MCI Group has achieved an unprecedented lighting project, which is to design a luminary with LED Technology to illuminate the Piazza Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, Saudi Arabia.

En 2008 se planteó al equipo del Grupo MCI un reto muy especial para la realización de un proyecto luminotécnico, hasta el momento, sin precedentes a nivel mundial. El proyecto consistía en diseñar una luminaria que utilizara tecnología LED para iluminar una de las plazas más importantes de Oriente Medio, la Piazza Prophet’s Mosque en Medina.

The Piazza Phophet’s Mosque is a world renowned place for pilgrims, where millions of Muslims go every year during Hej and Ramadan. The architect of this project requested us to retrofit luminaire of the existing 1200W metal halide lamp with LED technology with 540 High Power LEDs running at constant current of 500mA, without changing or modifying the outer look of the luminaire. Two main reasons motivate the client to change to LED technology: 1. Chromatic Reproduction: The conventional metal halide lamps will change its Colour Rendering Index (CRI) gradually with time, and it will affect the aesthetics of the luminaire while LED technology maintains a steady CRI over time. 2. Maintenance: The metal-halide lamps have a product life of only 12000 hours compared to 50000 Hours of the LEDs. Using our program Saving Calculator we were able to demonstrate that the initial investment will won back with the maintenance saving in approximately only two years.

La Piazza Prophet’s Mosque, es un lugar de peregrinación por excelencia donde millones de musulmanes se reúnen cada año en época del Hej y Ramadán. El arquitecto del proyecto se puso en contacto con MCI para diseñar una luminaria capaz de sustituir a una lámpara de descarga de halogenuros metálicos de 1.065 W, por una luminaria que utilizara tecnología LED y que tuviera 540 LEDs conducidos a 500 mA. Todo ello sin alterar o modificar la estética actual de la luminaria. Los motivos principales por los que el cliente quería sustituir la lámpara de descarga de halogenuros por una lámpara basada en tecnología LED eran: 1. Reproducción Cromática: Las lámparas convencionales de halogenuros metálicos a lo largo del tiempo cambian la tonalidad del índice de reproducción cromática (IRC), por lo que la calidad de la iluminación de la luminaria se ve afectada. 2. Mantenimiento: las lámparas de halogenuros metálicos tiene 12.000 horas/vida, frente a las 50.000 horas/vida de los LEDs. Utilizando nuestro programa Saving Calculator demostramos al cliente un retorno de la inversión al cabo de, aproximadamente, dos años.

Finally, in 2011 eight mockups were installed at the Piazza Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, and still shinning like the first day.

En total se realizaron 8 prototipos, que se instalaron en la Piazza Prophet’s Mosque en Medina.

Thanks to this project and the experience, in 2012 we started to participate in a new and very exciting project: U53 Projector for Makkah Haram Expansión.

Gracias al éxito del proyecto de Maddinah, en 2012 se inició la participación en el proyecto Makkah Haram Expansion con la fabricación de unos proyectores LED para la U53 (a la que seguirán U28 y U20).

Together with the companies Liebherr (Switzerland) and Bartenbach GmbH (Austria), our R&D department has designed and produced 8 new LED lighting fixtures to be integrated into a large umbrella (U53) ensuring a uniform light and high performance.

De la mano de Liebherr y Bartenbach GmbH, Grupo MCI ha fabricado 8 prototipos que formaran parte de una de las 8 sombrillas gigantes (U53) que se instalaran en Makkah.

Each umbrella U53 (in total 8) has a total weight of 600 tones and a high of 53 meters, and consists of a telescopic mast, folding steel frame and a Teflon fabric capable of handling high wind speeds in open and closed positions. The umbrellas will react automatically to changing weather conditions, and will provide protection from the sun and the rain.

Cada una de las sombrillas U53 tiene un peso total de 600 toneladas y mide 53 metros. Su membrana (a 30 metros de altura) proyecta una sombra de 2.400 m2. Las U53 estan ubicadas a 17 m de altura.
