Vamos a leer – La familia hispana 2 l

Lee el pasaje siguiente y responde en inglés a las preguntas que siguen. La familia es una de las instituciones sociales más importantes del mundo hispano. Casi toda actividad social, como almuerzos, paseos y fiestas, se realizan siempre en familia. Aparte de la familia nuclear de los padres y tres o cuatro hijos, la familia tradicional también incluía a los abuelos, tíos, sobrinos, y casi todos vivían en la misma casa. Hoy en día la familia hispana es más pequeña y aunque hay casos en que los abuelos, tíos y sobrinos viven con la familia, no es tan común como antes. Aparte de los abuelos, tíos y primos, hay otras personas que forman la familia hispana. También hay los padrinos que son los amigos íntimos de los padres que son conocidos como “tíos” y sus hijos conocidos como “primos”. La familia hispana tiene una larga tradición de ser unida ya que todos se encuentran en las mismas reuniones y las mismas fiestas. Con la frecuencia en que se producen divorcios y separaciones, es muy común ver a una familia en la cual hay una madrastra o un padrastro. Hoy en día la familia tradicional hispana también está cambiando en cuanto a los roles. Tradicionalmente el papel del padre era trabajar y proveer para la familia, mientras que la madre se quedaba en casa cuidando a los hijos y haciendo los quehaceres domésticos. En la actualidad muchas mujeres tienen trabajos fuera de la casa, y en las familias de la clase media o alta es común tener a una empleada que ayuda a la madre con los quehaceres domésticos.
