Lesley

Welcome Fenga Family Greetings to you all! We arrived in Whitehorse on 16 December 2022 at 3:00 p.m. We were amused by the welcome we received at the airport from members of both Whitehorse parishes, which made our arrival very comfortable. Church members from both Whitehorse congregations are very welcoming and friendly. Special mention goes to Bishop Lesley and her family for a wonderful introduction to the Diocese and Whitehorse churches. Our arrival was made so easy that we felt at home. We are settling in well with the help we are getting from church members. I have managed to get my children enrolled at schools. Ngenyasha has been enrolled at St Francis Catholic school in grade 10, Ngerutendo at Jack Hulland Elementary School in grade 5 and Ngemunamato is enrolled at Tree House Day Care Centre. Special thanks go to the members of both vestries for the tremendous support they are giving in familiarising me with how things operate at the Whitehorse churches. My children and I are very happy with the love we are getting from the parishioners, and the support we have received from the members of clergy. In particular, I thank Bishop Lesley for lending us her personal vehicle. Love, mercy, and peace to the parishes of Whitehorse and the Diocese of Yukon. Vincent. Photo curtesy of Rev Dr. Fenga

Welcome Frieda In November 2022 Bishop Lesley welcomed a new diocesan Administrative Assistant, Frieda Brown. Frieda is a much-needed addition to the diocesan team, and the key contact for all diocesan worshippers, clergy, and those with lay responsibilities. Frieda indicates that she recently completed a 12-week course with Opportunities Yukon, learning all the essential skills to get and thrive in a job. She brings to the Diocese of Yukon a depth of office experience and skills. Including for the communities outside of Whitehorse, Frieda’s helpful approach, knowledge and abilities are a vital asset as we work together. Frieda can be contacted at: [email protected] Thursday Lunch-hour Express Eucharist at Christchurch: Made for the Whole Diocese of Yukon One of the purposes for restarting the Thursday lunch-hour Eucharists at Christ Church Cathedral was for the convenience of Yukon Anglicans, their family and friends, from communities outside of Whitehorse. If you are in Whitehorse during a Thursday over the noonhour, please join us for an “Express Eucharist” at 12:00, a friendly, informal short communion service based on the Book of Common Prayer. After the service there are lots of opportunities to chat, and to meet Dr. Fenga and Frieda, as well as other members of our Diocese. Drop in any time over the Thursday – no reservations necessary ! Then you can be back to your appointments, shopping or other business in Whitehorse before 1:00 p.m.

Welcome Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada The Diocese of Yukon will be blessed with a visit by the Most Rev. Linda Nicholls, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, during the weekend of Palm Sunday, 31 March – 2 April 2023. Bishop Lesley is hopeful that she and Archbishop Nicholls will be able to visit some of the communities. More details, including regarding services in which the Archbishop will be participating, will follow in future eNewsletters. The Christian Century - Reader-Friendly Theology Online Often, after services, participants look for references to resources such as articles, books or websites which they can consult to help them understand more about the readings and the sermon that they have just heard. One useful weekly source of insight into the readings, often with implications for further thinking about the sermon, is The Christian Century, which is available both in print and on-line, with much of the on-line content free of charge. A non-profit ecumentical organisation, The Christian Century also publishes a weekly eMail book review, as well as short, thoughtful weekly eMail addressing issues of concern to twenty-first century Christians. Here’s a link that can be followed to this largely free and always enlightening publication: https://www.christiancentury.org/main-menu-3-email-signup Next Issue: Our responsibility to ensure a Safe Church, Part I photo: Michael Hudson/ACC We need your input to make this work!

A big friendly welcome From all the members of the two Whitehorse congregations to the Rev. Dr. Vincent Fenga and his three children: Ngenyasha, Ngerutendo and Ngemunamato, who are busy settling into the rectory beside the Church of the Northern Apostles, we look forward to your first message next Sunday at 09:00 at The Church of the Northern Apostles and at 11:00 at the Christ Church Cathedral. The temperature of -40 on your arrival here must have been a terrible shock. We try to be a warm bunch even if the weather is not warm. Keep warm. Hard to imagine but summer is coming! Honestly!!!

Common Threads Serve the Whole Community The ladies give thanks to God for the many Blessings received at Common Threads. This is a group of ladies who have been faithfully coming together on Tuesday mornings for coffee, conversation, and comeradery. They have produced hundreds of items much-needed and appriciated by our Whitehorse community. Over the last 4.5 years these dedicated workers have been buying yarn, knitting, crocheting and donating their finished articles to various local organizations: Medical Baxter Bags, mastectomy prothetics, and shawls to the hospital; Warm hats and socks for the Outreach Van; Slippers and soft cuddle toys for Kaushee Place; Comforting shawls for Whistlebend Place, Thomson Centre; and Copper Ridge Place; Toys for the Yukon Emergency Measures organisation; Shawls and toys for individuals in need, visitors, and gifts for folks who were leaving the Yukon. We encourage all to join our laugh-filled group Feb. 7 at 09:00 Tuesday mornings at the Church of the Northern Apostles to “Spin a Yarn”. Report by Rev. Elsa Koln Cheeseman A small sample of the toys and shawls

Yukon Poetry Black Socks No! Black Socks is not a baseball team. Nor man, all black mourning clothes. Four socks all black, this redhead trots, To call before the earliest dawn, Again, after all the sun-light is gone. We would not know to look or see In summer's days no signs would be. With November’s fresh snow, we come know, His twice daily path to visit us. By small paw prints and yellowed snow To claim his route, he does fully mark. He never whines, yelps, not even bark. By that we think we know Silently spying, for he 's nay our foe Me, away from moon's cold glow Behind a window in my warm home, Black Socks walks quite surely, up To sit like king on his own front step. He looks about and sniffs the air. Perhaps to find signs of scraps left there. Or maybe smell what we've just been cooking. When, finding none he wanders on. He lives wild, wary, always looking For to find much finer fare. My hidden camera flash and he is gone That he, or she, exists at all, found only in The photos and snow-prints of paw. Curtesy of a parishioner.

In there 35 years as neighbours on Earth, Arnie and Bart never knew they were both Christians. Funny, isn't it? Do your neighbours know what you believe? SMILE OF THE DAY “This week’s Sermon was to be about, how we all need to simplify our lives. Unfortunately, I lost the whole thing when my computer crashed.”
