Puerto Rico will vote on its political fate on November 6 San Juan (Puerto Rico), Sep 20 (EFE). Puerto Ricans go to the polls on Nov. 6 to decide whether to ratify for 4 years the reelection of statehood governor Luis Fortuño or elect the challenger Alejandro Garcia Padilla, at which time they will also decide on Puerto Rico’s political relationship with the United States. An unchecked crime wave in 2011 costing the lives of over a thousand people and an unemployment rate of 14 percent seem difficult obstacles to overcome for Fortuño, President of New Progressive Party (PNP) that advocates annexation to the United States, to keep control of the executive branch. This coming referendum has no legal standing and local analysts interpret it as a way to force the current Administration in Washington to get more involved in resolving the status issue, although the U.S. Congress has stated that it does not currently support any official U.S.-sanctioned referendum on the status Puerto Rico policy. The November consultation comes after an August 19th vote, in which Puerto Rican voters were asked about reducing the sizes of the Commonwealth’s House of Representatives and Senate.

Here are two important safety tips for you to remember:

1. Protect yourself from a silent killer. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is a product of incomplete burning of natural gas, propane, gasoline, coal or wood. It can result from a faulty chimney, flue or vent from a heating appliance or water heater. Have your heating system and chimney, flues and vents checked once a year by a professional.

2. Esté preparado si siente olor a gas natural.

2. Be prepared if you smell natural gas. If you smell that distinctive odor – it’s like the smell of rotten eggs – GET UP, GET OUT and call RG&E immediately from a neighbor’s phone. We’ll respond quickly to make sure you and your family are safe.

If you are an RG&E natural gas customer and need to report a natural gas emergency or suspect a carbon monoxide problem, call us at 1.800.743.1702.

What You Should Know About Depression

By Kathy Rissew, Social Worker at HCR Home Care

Depression is a disease that affects people of every age, ethnicity, sex, and socioeconomic status. What is depression? Everyone experiences sad times in life but sadness is not depression; depression is a disease, just as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes are diseases. Depression is not a personal weakness, it is not “all in your head” nor can you talk yourself out of depression or “straighten up” as some people believe. Depression usually does not go away by itself and needs treatment. Realize that your disease is one that you can treat. The following are symptoms that can signal depression: Lack of selfesteem—a feeling that you aren’t as good as others, aren’t liked by others or don’t do things well; tearfulness; insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping; overeating or appetite loss; fatigue and decreased energy; loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable, including sex; difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions; isolation; persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” feelings; poor hygiene, not showering, brushing teeth, or caring for self; thoughts of killing or harming yourself. Research shows that certain people might be more susceptible to depression than others. There appears to be a genetic component to depression, which means that if you have a family member with depression you are more likely to develop depression. Research shows that people who have been exposed to childhood abuse may be more prone to depression. People with addictions, also, seem to be more prone to depression. It is not clear if the depression caused the person to use drugs and alcohol or if the use of mood altering chemicals causes the brain to stop making the feel-good chemicals and causes depression. Depression appears to be caused when the “feel good chemicals” in the brain become depleted – often by life stressors, such as grief and loss, chronic pain, and health issues but sometimes depression does not have a known precipitator. About 10% of people in the U.S. over the age of 18 have depression and recently there has been a 23% increase in childhood depression. At any given time almost 19 million adults have depression. What can be done about depression? The most important thing to do is to see your doctor and to be honest about your symptoms. There are simple 10-20 question quizzes that can help identify depression (such as the Beck Depression Scale). Your doctor will probably suggest a medication called an antidepressant. Antidepressants usually take three to four weeks to begin working at an optimal level so it is important to keep taking this medication daily, as directed by your physician. Don’t mistake feeling better for being cured and not needing to continue your medication regime. Your doctor or psychiatrist can help

you decide eventually whether you still need medication but those with depression often have relapse to depression after stopping medication. Talk therapy can also help by allowing you to discuss issues that may be stressing you or providing you with a safe place and a trusted person about your feelings. There are also support groups for people with mental illness that may be helpful. Depression will be the second largest killer, behind heart disease, by year 2020, and research shows that depression contributes to fatal coronary artery disease. Eighty percent of depressed people are not currently having any treatment at all. Latinos are considered to be a high-risk group for depression, anxiety and substance abuse. Latina women are at a higher risk of suffering from depression (46%) than Latino men (19.6%). Untreated depression is a disease that can kill; there were 36,909 suicides in the U.S. in 2009; these suicides were completed by people who felt hopeless and believed that things would not or could not get better. 15% of people with depression commit suicide. These people mistakenly felt that death was the only way out of their misery. If you are feeling overwhelmed or suicidal of being assessed by a professional connected with an outpatient mental health provider. Remember, there is help if you are willing to reach out for it.

KID’S CORNER

IMAGINANDO TU PROPIO LIBRO Imagining your own book

Often when I was small, I used to imagine what it would be like to be able to travel through space; how long the trip would last, wondered if anyone could really live up there and asked myself what would they do. Most importantly, I wondered how I would get home to be with my family once again!

The parents accepted Felipe’s proposal to travel into space. While the three were traveling in space, Felipe thought to himself: “It’s a good thing that I use my imagination, because if not, tonight would be a very boring night indeed.”

Felipe looked around himself, left the room and soon came back with a cardboard box (caja de cartón). His parents asked what he was planning to do with that box, to which Felipe answered: “This is not a cardboard box, I am not crazy. This is an ultra-modern space shuttle that will take the three of us to explore space. So, please, Mr. and Mrs. Astronaut, buckle your seatbelts, we are now leaving toward infinity!”

The parents said no, they had never been in that place. They were so tired that it would impossible for them to jump up to space.

Are you ready to play? 1- Why do you think that Felipe’s parents didn’t want to play? If one of your friends or family members doesn’t want to play with you, what do you do? 1- ¿Por qué piensas que los padres de Felipe no querian jugar? Si alguno de tus amigos o tus familiares no quieren jugar contigo, ¿qué haces?

To be able to help you create your own book and allow your imagination to expand, we are going to do some things beforehand. For example, you can ask someone older than you to help you read, to read to you frequently and to introduce 2- Responde verdadero o falso a las siguientes you to new vocabulary. oraciones: The most fun part? And once again we return to the premise that ignorance of the world in which we live will always put us in the hands of those groups who like to take advantage in order to exert their power with selfish ends. This novel was difficult to read for many members of the Literary Café due to the high content of negative comments directed at foreigners. Nevertheless, it helped us to reflect on the interest that we show about knowing other cultures or in participating in multicultural activities. The fact of being Hispanic puts us in an unknown place for many and the fact of promoting our culture more can be a good way to facilitate cultural diversity and a more harmonious social environment.

Umberto Eco in his character Simonini gives life to xenophobic thoughts and actions that are antisemitic, misogynist and racist that became more and more collectively dramatic through various forms of media such as pamphlets and brochures that were published in that time. It’s Time to Take Control of Our Children’s Health According to the CDC childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. In 2008 and today, more than one third of children and adolescents are overweight or obese. Childhood obesity has both immediate and long-term effects on health and well-being. • Obese youth are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure. • Obese adolescents are more likely to have pre-diabetes, bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems such as stigmatization and poor self-esteem. • In long-term children and adolescents who are obese are likely to be obese as adults and are therefore more at risk for adult health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, and osteoarthritis. Common Winter Illnesses in Children The cold weather is upon us and already it’s the busiest time of the year for most pediatricians. The waiting rooms are flooded with kids with the flu, coughs and colds. More often then not, the parents are just as sick. As a Daycare Center Director, I get to see it all. There are several illnesses that we see the most during this season. They include the flu, coughs and colds, croup, rotavirus (a severe diarrhea illness), RSV (an often severe cough and wheezing illness), and less serious facial rash. As parents it’s important to know what to look for and how you can boost your child’s immune system to help prevent many of these illnesses. According to the American College Health Association of Princeton University supplements like Echinacea, Vitamin C, fruits and vegetables supplements, Zinc, and Probioatics can be given to children to help boost their immune system. As parents, teachers and caregivers; you can maximize your immunity further by getting adequate sleep, avoiding excess alcohol, finding ways to control stress and by not smoking. Furthermore, there is some evidence that consumption of Vitamin C on a regular basis can also be helpful. If you or your child gets sick, starting Echinacea and Vitamin C right away may make your illness shorter and milder. But knowing what to look for in common winter illnesses can help you treat them better and faster.

with your doctor. THE FLU: It hits between November and March, and is probably responsible for • Moderate to severe dehydration. most sick visits to the doctor during the winter. How can you tell if your child (or • You have a gut feeling that your child is you!) has the flu? There are two typical unusually ill. forms of the flu: • Severe cough with chest pain AND 1. Fever and one or two other symptoms shortness of breath. This may mean such as sore throat and headache - some pneumonia is setting in. flu illnesses are more simple, and cause just a few symptoms. RSV - Respiratory Syncycial Virus: This is a virus like the common cold, but with 2. Multi-symptom flu - this is the more one big difference. This virus causes mild miserable kind of flu. It can include many to severe wheezing, especially in younger or all of the following symptoms: infants. While normal cold viruses infect the nose and upper lungs, RSV gets deep o High fever, chills down into the lungs and inflames the o Sore throat airways. This is important to know because o Headache the inflamed airways in the lungs will o Nausea then get much narrower, thus making o Vomiting it more difficult to breath. Severe cases require o Stuffy nose hospitalization. RSV runs through day o Clear or green runny nose care centers and other nurseries like an o Cough - dry or productive epidemic during the winter. o Irritated, red eyes CROUP: Croup is a virus that inflames the You should take your child to see the doctor vocal cords. the airway around the vocal cords gets so swollen, that there is not much room for air to pass through and high fever - this often occurs, especially in younger kids. ROTAVIRUS DIARRHEA: Rotavirus is the most common cause of diarrhea in infants and young children during the winter. This virus causes very foul smelling and very runny diarrhea. Rotavirus usually lasts much longer than most other causes of diarrhea. So if your infant develops moderate to severe diarrhea this time of year, it is probably rotavirus. It is now recommended to take Probiotics to help diarrhea resolve faster even for infants, but always consult your doctor first. Although normal coughs and colds and dry, red cheeks are also common during winter time, they are often not as severe as the other illnesses mentioned. For dry, red cheeks a gentle moisturizing cream will usually minimize this rash. And 9 out of 10, mild as a slight runny nose, or as severe as fever, deep junky cough, and thick green congested sinuses are just the common cold symptoms. Knowing the signs and severity of these common illnesses helps you save a trip to the doctor. So help prevent or ease these common winter blues by boosting your family’s immune system so kids can stay in school and you at work. Remember, you are your child’s first teacher and best advocate.
