Los puertorriqueños se pronunciarán sobre su destino político el 6 de noviembre San Juan (Puerto Rico), 20 sep (EFE).Los puertorriqueños acuden a la urnas el próximo 6 de noviembre para decidir si ratifican por 4 años más al gobernador anexionista Luis Fortuño o dan paso al aspirante Alejandro García Padilla, cita en la que se pronunciarán además sobre su relación política con Estados Unidos. Una criminalidad sin freno que en 2011 le costó la vida a más de mil personas y un desempleo del 14 por ciento parecen un obstáculo difícil de salvar para que Fortuño, el presidente del Partido Nuevo Progresista (PNP) que aboga por la anexión a Estados Unidos, pueda mantenerse al mando del Ejecutivo. Fortuño enfrenta el líder del Partido Popular Democrático (PPD), Alejandro García Padilla, un hombre de 41 años con buena imagen al que sus detractores acusan de falta de esencia y de esconder detrás de una elegante apariencia la falta de un proyecto para Puerto Rico. Twenty Community Members to be awarded at Minority Reporter Media Group’s five-year Anniversary Celebration Rochester, NY (October 21, 2012) Twenty Rochester community members will receive awards and recognition at a luncheon to commemorate the 5th anniversary of Minority Reporter Media Group from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 25 at the Rochester Plaza Hotel and Conference Center, 75 State Street, in Rochester. “Five years is a significant milestone, and we felt that there was no better way to celebrate than to recognize some of Rochester’s most outstanding citizens,” said McCleary. “The twenty individuals we have chosen to honor is a small representation of a large and growing group of community members who work tirelessly to make a difference in our community.” Awardees were chosen for their personal achievement and community involvement in various categories including volunteerism, entrepreneurship, Advocacy, health,

education, music and arts, etc.

Calendar octubre 17 Classics for Foodlink Concert Time: 7:00pm Location: Athena Performing Arts Center, 800 Long Pond Road The Greece Athena High School Jazz Ensemble will present “An Evening of Classics for Foodlink,” a concert to collect food items for Foodlink’s BackPack Program. The concert will feature the band Jive Street Five, singer-songwriter Paul Rivers, and the Athena High School Jazz Ensemble. Admission to the concert is free, but concert-goers are asked to bring food donations of canned vegetables (mixed vegetables, corn, carrots, peas, green beans) and chewy granola bars.

What You Should Know About Depression

Depression is a disease that affects people of every age, ethnicity, sex, and socioeconomic status. What is depression? Everyone experiences sad times in life but sadness is not depression; depression is a disease, just as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes are diseases. Depression is not a personal weakness, it is not “all in your head” nor can you talk yourself out of depression or “straighten up” as some people believe. Depression usually does not go away by itself and needs treatment. Realize that your disease is one that you can treat. The following are symptoms that can signal depression: Lack of selfesteem—a feeling that you aren’t as good as others, aren’t liked by others or don’t do things well; tearfulness; insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping; overeating or appetite loss; fatigue and decreased energy; loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable, including sex; difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions; isolation; persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” feelings; poor hygiene, not showering, brushing teeth, or caring for self; thoughts of killing or harming yourself. Research shows that certain people might be more susceptible to depression than others. There appears to be a genetic component to depression, which means that if you have a family member with depression you are more likely to develop depression. Research shows that people who have been exposed to childhood abuse may be more prone to depression. People with addictions, also, seem to be more prone to depression. It is not clear if the depression caused the person to use drugs and alcohol or if the use of mood altering chemicals causes the brain to stop making the feel-good chemicals and causes depression. Depression appears to be caused when the “feel good chemicals” in the brain become depleted – often by life stressors, such as grief and loss, chronic pain, and health issues but sometimes depression does not have a known precipitator. About 10% of people in the U.S. over the age of 18 have depression and recently there has been a 23% increase in childhood depression. At any given time almost 19 million adults have depression. What can be done about depression? The most important thing to do is to see your doctor and to be honest about your symptoms. There are simple 10-20 question quizzes that can help identify depression (such as the Beck Depression Scale). Your doctor will probably suggest a medication called an antidepressant. Antidepressants usually take three to four weeks to begin working at an optimal level so it is important to keep taking this medication daily, as directed by your physician. Don’t mistake feeling better for being cured and not needing to continue your medication regime. Your doctor or psychiatrist can help

you decide eventually whether you still need medication but those with depression often have relapse to depression after stopping medication. Talk therapy can also help by allowing you to discuss issues that may be stressing you or providing you with a safe place and a trusted person about your feelings. There are also support groups for people with mental illness that may be helpful. Depression will be the second largest killer, behind heart disease, by year 2020, and research shows that depression contributes to fatal coronary artery disease. Eighty percent of depressed people are not currently having any treatment at all. Latinos are considered to be a high-risk group for depression, anxiety and substance abuse. Latina women are at a higher risk of suffering from depression (46%) than Latino men (19.6%). Untreated depression is a disease that can kill; there were 36,909 suicides in the U.S. in 2009; these suicides were completed by people who felt hopeless and believed that things would not or could not get better. 15% of people with depression commit suicide. These people mistakenly felt that death was the only way out of their misery. EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE Karen Hillary-Iglesia Karen Hillary-Iglesia was born in Montego Bay, Jamaica. She immigrated to the United States and settled in Rochester, NY at the age of 10.

Karen worked as a chemist at Bausch and Lomb, manipulating liquid gold and platinum, to improve the chemical process for plating Ray Ban sunglasses. In the late 90’s, having a passion for educating youth, Karen took a position as Director of Education for Baden Street Settlement.

Alina Diaz was born in Girardot, Colombia in 1959. As a single mother, she was forced to migrate to United States in 1988 as a result of the social disparities in a society that at that time punished single mothers.

She crossed the Mexican border four months pregnant. Her first daughter was born in a homeless shelter in Chicago. After seven years in an extremely abusive relationship she escaped with her three children: Veronica, Daniela and Emmanuel to a transitional longterm shelter for domestic violence victims. That was the beginning of a new life and the beginning of a long journey in social advocacy.

Her activism focuses around issues of New York State farmworkers, labor laws and the working conditions and labor exploitation of this population; which she accomplishes through intense lobbying and education of NYS legislators and the general public.

Hilberto “Albert” Algarin Hilberto “Albert” Algarin is Director and Founder of the Hispanic Community Center and President of the North Clinton Business Association.

Algarin came to Rochester, NY in 1971. His first employment was with the University of Rochester until he retired in 1995. Additionally, he was involved with Health Care Union Local 1199, a union steward representing workers as a delegate. He retired from employment and was the first Latino Vice President of Local 1199.

IMAGINANDO TU PROPIO LIBRO Imagining your own book

Muchas veces, cuando yo era pequeña me imaginaba cómo sería poder viajar al espacio; cuánto duraría el viaje, si alguien podría vivir allí, qué harían las personas todos los días y sobre todo ¡cómo regresaría a mi casa para poder estar nuevamente con mi familia!

Los padres accedieron a la propuesta de viaje de Felipe. Mientras los tres viajaban hacia el espacio, Felipe pensó para sí mismo: “Menos mal que yo sí tengo imaginación, porque si no, esta noche sería una noche muy aburrida.” ¿Estás listo para jugar?

Often when I was small, I used to imagine what it would be like to be able to travel through space; how long the trip would last, wondered if anyone could really live up there and asked myself what would they do. Most importantly, I wondered how I would get home to be with my family once again!

The parents accepted Felipe’s proposal to travel into space. While the three were traveling in space, Felipe thought to himself: “It’s a good thing that I use my imagination, because if not, tonight would be a very boring night indeed.”

El niño de repente preguntó a su mamá y a su papá: “¿Han estado alguna vez en el espacio? Los padres dijeron que no, que ellos nunca habían estado en aquel lugar. Ellos estaban tan cansados que sería casi imposible que pudieran saltar hasta el espacio.

Felipe looked around himself, left the room and soon came back with a cardboard box (caja de cartón). Este mes Umberto Eco fue el escritor que llevo a El Cafecito Literario a seguir de cerca al falsificador Simonini que vive en la novela de El Cementerio de Praga.

Common Winter Illnesses in Children The cold weather is upon us and already it’s the busiest time of the year for most pediatricians. The waiting rooms are flooded with kids with the flu, coughs and colds. More often then not, the parents are just as sick. As a Daycare Center Director, I get to see it all. There are several illnesses that we see the most during this season. They include the flu, coughs and colds, croup, rotavirus (a severe diarrhea illness), RSV (an often severe cough and wheezing illness), and less serious facial rash. As parents it’s important to know what to look for and how you can boost your child’s immune system to help prevent many of these illnesses. According to the American College Health Association of Princeton University supplements like Echinacea, Vitamin C, fruits and vegetables supplements, Zinc, and Probioatics can be given to children to help boost their immune system. As parents, teachers and caregivers; you can maximize your immunity further by getting adequate sleep, avoiding excess alcohol, finding ways to control stress and by not smoking. Furthermore, there is some evidence that consumption of Vitamin C on a regular basis can also be helpful. If you or your child gets sick, starting Echinacea and Vitamin C right away may make your illness shorter and milder.
