THE ADVENT WREATH holds four candles which are lit, one at a time, on each of

the four Sundays of the Advent season. The Advent candles readily demonstrate the strong contrast between darkness and light. In the Bible, Christ is referred to as the “Light of the World” contrasted with the darkness of sin. Human history spanned long ages before our prophesied Savior would finally make his appearance, and with him God’s promise to make all things new through him. As his Advent, or “coming,” draws nearer another candle is lit, each candle dispelling the darkness a little more. Each candle represents 1,000 years. Added together, the four candles symbolize the 4,000 years that humanity waited for the world’s Savior—from Adam and Eve to Jesus, whose birth was foretold in the Old Testament. Today, the final purple candle is lit to mark the final week of prayer and penance as we wait expectantly for the soon-coming birth of the King of Kings . This last candle, known as the “Angel’s Candle” symbolizes Peace and reminds us of the message of the angels: “Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men.”

Jubilee Year of Mercy - Fourth Sunday of Advent In proclaiming the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis proclaimed his desire that this Holy Year be “steeped in mercy,” as we disciples “go out to every man and woman,” bringing the “balm of mercy” to “believers and those far away, as a sign that the Kingdom of God is already present in our midst!” (Misericordiae Vultus, 5). In her visitation of Elizabeth, Mary beautifully presents just such an image. Despite the perils of her pregn a n c y , n o t t o m e n t i o n h e r preoccupations as a young unwed mother, Mary instantly, unselfishly, “goes out” of herself, hastening far and over dangerous terrain, to “bring the balm of God’s tender mercy” in assistance rendered to her older relative. Since baptism and the Eucharist have made us, in a way, bearers of the living Christ within as Mary was, such selfless “going out” of ourselves to be of loving service to others in mercy should especially mark our Christmas season this Jubilee Year. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. “Help one another This is what Jesus teaches us. This is what I do. And I do it With my heart.” –Pope Francis “O, Little Town of Bethlehem.” A Philadelphia clergyman named Phillips Brooks penned these popular words back in the mid-1800s, but the prophet Micah could have used them first. Micah knew that from small packages great treasures come. In today’s first reading, he knew that from tiny Bethlehem would come the Lord. The writer in Hebrews explains that Christ came to us to do the will of God by establishing a new order and by becoming our perfect sacrifice. And Luke tells us that Elizabeth and John, the infant in her womb, understand that great and wondrous things are at hand with the coming of the Lord. This is the Fourth Sunday of Advent. Soon we celebrate anew the fruit of Mary’s womb. As we are told in Hebrews, Jesus’ new order is being established even today. And as Micah proclaims, his greatness is reaching even now to the ends of the earth. UN ORDEN NUEVO “Oh, pequeña aldea de Belén”; un clérigo de Filadelfia llamado Phillips Brooks escribió este popular villancico a mediados de los 1800, pero el profeta Miqueas hubiera podido hacerlo primero. Miqueas sabía que el tesoro grande viene en estuche pequeño. En la primera lectura de hoy, él sabía que del pueblito de Belén vendría el Señor. El escritor de la carta a los hebreos explica que Cristo vino a nosotros para hacer la voluntad de Dios de establecer un nuevo orden y ser un sacrificio perfecto. Y Lucas nos dice que Isabel y Juan, el pequeño en sus entrañas, comprenden que grandes maravillas han llegado con la venida del Señor. Este es el Cuarto Domingo de Adviento. Mañana celebramos de nuevo el fruto de tu vientre, María. Como se nos dice en Hebreos, el nuevo orden de Jesús se está creando hoy mismo. RECEMOS LA CORONILLA DE LA DIVINA MISERICORDIA CADA DIA EN FAMILIA DURANTE ESTE AÑO DE LA MISERICORDIA

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Esta semana recordamos a los niños judíos que fueron asesinados por orden del Rey Herodes en Belén. Esa tragedia que ocurrió cuando el viejo y celoso rey se enteró del nacimiento de un nuevo rey de los judíos. Él mandó a matar a todo niño que tuviera menos de dos años. El llanto de las familias que perdieron sus pobres inocentes se ha convertido en risas en varios países latinoamericanos. El 28 de diciembre en muchas partes es conmemorado como el día de los inocentes que viene siendo el April Fools Day de Latinoamérica. En ese día se hacen bromas para burlarse de los amigos. Si la broma funciona al pobre que fue engañado se le llama “inocente”. La inocencia normalmente se atribuye a los niños o a los ingenuos, pero en si la inocencia es una virtud cristiana, de los que hemos sido perdonados por Cristo. DEVOCION A LA DIVINA MISERICORDA Una devoción especial se comenzó a esparcir por el mundo entero a partir del diario de una joven monja polaca en 1930. El mensaje no es nada nuevo, pero nos recuerda lo que la Iglesia siempre ha enseñado por medio de las Sagradas Escrituras y la tradición: que Dios es misericordioso y que perdona y que nosotros también debemos ser misericordiosos y debemos perdonar. Pero en la devoción a la Divina Misericordia este mensaje toma un enfoque poderoso que llama a las personas a un entendimiento más profundo sobre el Amor ilimitado de Dios y la disponibilidad de este Amor a todos – especialmente a los más pecadores.El mensaje y la devoción a Jesús como la Divina Misericordia esta basada en los escritos de la Santa María Faustina Kowalska, una monja polaca sin educación básica que, en obediencia a su director espiritual, escribió un diario de alrededor de 600 páginas que relatan las revelaciones que ella recibió sobre la Misericordia de Dios. Aún antes de su muerte en 1938 se comenzó a esparcir la devoción a la Divina Misericordia. El mensaje de Misericordia es que Dios nos Ama – a todos- no importa cuan grande sean nuestras faltas. Él quiere que reconozcamos que Su Misericordia es más grande que nuestros pecados, para que nos acerquemos a Él con confianza, para que recibamos su Misericordia y la dejemos derramar sobre otros. De tal manera de que todos participemos de Su Gozo. Es un mensaje que podemos recordar tan fácilmente como un ABC.A — Pide su Misericordia. Dios quiere que nos acerquemos a Él por medio de la oración constante, arrepentidos de nuestros pecados y pidiéndole que derrame Su Misericordia sobre nosotros y sobre el mundo enteroB — Sé misericordioso – Dios quiere que recibamos Su Misericordia y que por medio de nosotros se derrame sobre los demásC — Confía completamente en Jesús – Dios nos deja saber que las gracias de su Misericordia dependen de nuestra confianza.
