Reflection from Deacon Cavender / Reflexión del Diácono Cavender Each parish and pastoral experience presents its own joys and difficulties. I think that this could be stated most clearly by saying that each parish has its own personality. The personality of St. Francis Xavier Parish has been one with which I have gotten along very well. I have only been ordained as a deacon for about a month and a half, and a question that I get often is, “What is your favorite part about ministry”. There are two things that I have loved doing above everything else as a deacon within this parish and they are also two things that are very prevalent in the personality of this parish. The first has been the Eucharistic adoration. Being able to spend time with the Lord in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament has been central to my formation and my prayer life. I have been amazed at the devotion of the people in this parish to the Eucharist. According to the Vatican II document, Lumen Gentium, the Eucharist is the ‘source and summit of the Christian life’. Therefore, everything that we do as Christians should flow from the font of the Eucharist, but also everything we doing should point toward a single point of culmination in the Eucharist as well. Being able to have quality prayer time before the Lord’s Sacramental Presence has been so important for me and as a deacon and I enjoy sharing it with the parish. The second personality trait of this parish and ministry that I have found so rewarding is visiting the sick and homebound. There are four nursing homes and a hospital near this parish and I have taken great joy in visiting the members of each of these places, especially the hospital. As much as I love to do this, I have also never seen a parish that has more people bringing Communion to the sick than at Saint Francis Xavier. Almost every day at Mass there is at least one person bringing Christ to those who cannot make it to Mass. Visiting the homebound is certainly a virtuous activity, but it is made even more perfect by being able to bring Christ in his Eucharistic Presence to them. As I continue to be a part of this parish family, I know that I will continually be surprised by the graces God has been bestowing on his people and I hope that I can work with them and serve the Lord to the best of my abilities.

About the Liturgy “The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch…The Eucharist is the sum and summary of our faith: Our way of thinking is attuned to the Eucharist, and the Eucharist in turn confirms our way of thinking. - Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1324-1327

Have you ever heard of Natural Family Planning before? NFP is a way of following God’s plan for achieving and/or avoiding pregnancy. It’s a system that uses a woman’s signs of fertility to determine the fertile and infertile times of her cycle. Approved by the Catholic Church, NFP enables couples to avoid pregnancy by practicing chaste abstinence during the fertile time of the woman’s cycle. As a married couple, why should you consider NFP in your marriage as opposed to artificial contraception? Come to a very special presentation at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Abbottstown, on August 19th from 6:30 to 8 PM in the parish social hall. Dr. Luis García, MD of York will present on basic Church teaching regarding sexuality and NFP, and then will teach on various forms of NFP and the science behind them. From this first session, couples will then have the opportunity to learn a specific model of NFP that is best suited for their family’s needs. Advanced registration is not required, but for further information, please call the parish office at 2590611.
