WORLD YOUTH DAY PILGRIMS SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES PEREGRINOS DE LA JORNADA MUNDIAL DE LA JUVENTUD COMPARTEN SUS EXPERIENCIAS About thirty pilgrims from Queen of Peace spent the last two weeks on pilgrimage in Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Austria for World Youth Day 2016. They Heard a Word from the Holy Father, visited concentration camps, processed through the streets singing in praise to the Lord, and more. Below are a few of their experiences. Alrededor de treinta peregrinos de Reina de la Paz pasaron las ultimas dos semanas en peregrinación en Alemania, Republica Checa, Polonia, y Austria por la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud 2016. Escucharon una palabra del Santo Padre, visitaron campos de concentración, procesaron por las calles cantando en alabanza al Señor, y más. Aquí están algunas de sus experiencias. Itzel Castañeda, 16 The pilgrimage has helped me see how amazing it is to see people around the world come together on a religion that makes you happy and makes you forget your problems. This has also helped me see that when you are with God you never know what will come your way. When you start to tear down your walls and let God in, you start to feel happier and problems fade. The pilgrimage was just amazing, because you get to feel more alive. La peregrinacion me ha ayudado a ver lo increíble que es ver a la gente de todo el reunirse por una religion que te hace feliz y te hace olvidar tus problemas. XIX DOMINGO ORDINARIO first in my life, I am glad that I was able to be happy and experience true joy by putting God first for two fantastic weeks. This pilgrimage helped me immensely to deepen my relationship with God. Esta peregrinacion fue buena para mí, porque se me dio la oportunidad de renunciar a las posesiones terrenales y cosas monetarias que valoraba mas que a Dios. Y aunque todavía creo que voy a tener que esforzarme para poner a Dios primero en mi vida, estoy feliz de haber sido capaz de ser feliz y experimentar alegría verdadera al poner a Dios primero durante dos semanas fantasticas. Sean Nicolosi, 19: This trip was amazing because I came hoping and expecting to not do anything and sit back, but the Lord gave me responsibility as a chaperone and it made me enter, because I had to focus, listen, and pay attention to everything going on, including the words being proclaimed, otherwise I wouldn't have entered even remotely close to this. Grecia Sanchez, 26: This time of pilgrimage to a historical country like Poland has helped me to put my entire history before me. I see how through every event in my life, God was inviting me to fall in love with Him. I came to this pilgrimage seeking to reconcile with my history and accept my reality, that I have a dysfunctional family - for my conversion! I see that this discovery is so fundamental for my vocation to live as a Christian woman and also for those who I meet every day. On this pilgrimage, I was able to let go of my securities and all the things I idolize every day, to truly abandon myself to the Lord, my Father, who provided for me and all of us on the pilgrimage. Doing so, I am able to trust in Him and His divine mercy. Going to Auschwitz, I see what a life without God can be like and how much evil we are capable of doing. I realize that I am a Nazi today to those who I want to change, that I put them in little dark “isolation rooms” in my heart and starve them to death, in a sense. Pope Francis says “we should build bridges and not walls.” I pray that I take this revelation home and transmit this Divine Mercy to those around me, with the intercession of St. John Paul II and St. Faustina, who truly believed and trusted in this Divine Mercy. I am so thankful to God for bringing me all the way to Europe on this pilgrimage to reveal this to me. Esta peregrinacion a un país historico como Polonia, me ha ayudado a poner toda mi historia ante mí. Veo como a traves de todos los eventos en mi vida, Dios me ha estado invitando a enamorarme de El. Vine a esta peregrinacion buscando reconciliacion con mi historia y aceptar mi realidad, que tengo

una familia disfuncional - ¡para mi conversion! Veo que este descubrimiento es tan fundamental para mi vocacion de vivir como una mujer cristiana y tambien para todos los que me rodean todos los días. En esta peregrinacion, fui capaz de dejar al lado todas mis seguridades y las cosas que idolatro todos los días para realmente abandonarme al Senor, mi padre, que siempre vio por mí y por todos nosotros en la peregrinacion. Al hacer esto, puedo confiar en El y en su Divina Misericordia. Al ir a Auschwitz, vi lo que puede ser una vida sin Dios, y toda la maldad de la que somos capaces. Me doy cuenta que soy una Nazi hacia aquellos a quienes quiero cambiar, que los pongo en pequenas "celdas de aislamiento" en mi corazon y los mato de hambre ,den un sentido. El Papa Francisco dice que "debemos construir puentes y no muros". Oro para que tome esta revelacion a casa y transmita esta misericordia divina a los que me rodean, con la intercesion de San Juan Pablo II y Santa Faustina, que verdaderamente creyeron y confiaron en este Divina Misericordia. Estoy muy agradecido a Dios por traerme hasta Europa en esta peregrinacion para revelarme esto. Bryant Villarreal, 17 Ever since I left my house, I was contemplating if I would get something from coming on this pilgrimage. I never thought that I would have such a good time and also have a close encounter with God. I first realized how much of an attachment I had to my phone for pictures and having money for souvenirs. I also realized the potential evil I can do by not having God in my life, the harm I can do to others like the Nazis did to the Jews. But I soon thought about what I can do to/for others if I have God at the center, that I can be like Maximilian Kolbe, that I can be like St. John Paul II - one man changed the world. This is what I can do with God in my life. But I can’t do this now, because I don’t truly have God at the center of my life yet, because to give my life for the other, I first must be able to love my enemy, but I can’t do this on my strength alone. I need him at the center of my life, before I can do anything. I also experienced what it means to live life as a Catholic/Christian, to live without knowing what’s next, to live life as an adventure. Desde que salí de casa me pregunte si recibiría algo de esta peregrinacion. Nunca pense que iba a pasarmela tan bien y que tendría un encuentro cercano con Dios. Me di cuenta del apego tan grande que tenía hacia mi telefono para tomar fotos y al dinero para comprar recuerdos. Tambien me di cuenta de la maldad potencial que podría cometer si no tuviera a Dios en mi vida, el dano que les podría hacer a los demas, como los Nazis le hicieron a los Judíos. Pero tambien me di cuenta del bien que puedo hacer a los demas si tengo a Dios en el centro, que puedo ser como Maximiliano Kolbe, como San Juan Pablo II – un hombre cambio el mundo. Esto es lo que puedo hacer con Dios en mi vida. Pero no lo puedo hacer ahora, porque verdaderamente, no tengo a Dios en el centro de mi vida todavía, porque para dar mi vida para el otro, primero tengo que poder amar a mi enemigo, pero no lo puedo hacer con mi propia fuerza. Necesito tenerlo en el centro de mi vida antes de hacer cualquier cosa. Tambien experimente lo que es vivir la vida como Catolico/Cristiano, vivir sin saber que es lo que sigue, vivir la vida como una aventura.

August 7th 2016 19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME POPE FRANCIS’ MESSAGE TO OUR YOUTH AND TO US ALL:

Dear young people, you have come to Krakow to meet Jesus. Today’s Gospel speaks to us of just such a meeting between Jesus and a man named Zacchaeus, in Jericho (cf. Lk 19:1-10). There Jesus does not simply preach or greet people; as the Evangelist tells us, he passed through the city (v. 1). In other words, Jesus wants to draw near to us personally, to accompany our journey to its end, so that his life and our life can truly meet. An amazing encounter then takes place, with Zacchaeus, the chief “publican” or tax collector. Zacchaeus was thus a wealthy collaboColorado Pilgrims with Archbishop Samuel Aquila rator of the hated Roman occupiers, someone who exploited his own people, someone who, because of his ill repute, could not even approach the Master. His encounter with Jesus changed his life, just as it has changed, and can daily still change, each of our lives. But Zacchaeus had to face a number of obstacles in order to meet Jesus. It was not easy for him; he had to face a number of obstacles. At least three of these can also say something to us. The first obstacle is smallness of stature. Zacchaeus couldn’t see the Master because he was little. Even today we can risk not getting close to Jesus because we don’t feel big enough, because we don’t think ourselves worthy. This is a great temptation; it has to do not only with self-esteem, but with faith itself. For faith tells us that we are “children of God… that is what we are” (1 Jn 3:1). We have been created in God’s own image; Jesus has taken upon himself our humanity and his heart will never be separated from us; the Holy Spirit wants to dwell within us. We have been called to be happy for ever with God! That is our real “stature”, our spiritual identity: we are God’s beloved children, always. So you can see that not to accept ourselves, to live glumly, to be negative, means not to recognize our deepest identity. It is like walking away when God wants to look at me, trying to spoil his dream for me. God loves us the way we are, and no sin, fault or mistake of ours makes him change his mind. As far as Jesus is concerned – as the Gospel shows – no one is unworthy of, or far from, his thoughts. No one is insignificant. He loves all of us with a special love; for him all of us are important: you are important! God counts on you for what you are, not for what you possess. In his eyes the clothes you wear or the kind of cell phone you use are of absolutely no concern. He doesn’t care whether you are stylish or not; he cares about you, just as you are! In his eyes, you are precious, and your value is inestimable. Zacchaeus faced a second obstacle in meeting Jesus: the paralysis of shame. We spoke a little about this yesterday. We can imagine what was going on in his heart before he climbed that sycamore. It must have been quite a struggle – on one hand, a healthy curiosity and desire to know Jesus; on the other, the risk of appearing completely ridiculous. Zacchaeus was public figure, a man of power, but deeply hated. He knew that, in trying to climb that tree, he would have become a laughingstock to all. Yet he mastered his shame, because the attraction of Jesus was more powerful. You know what happens when someone is so attractive that we fall in love with them: we end up ready to do things we would never have even thought of doing. Something similar took place in the heart of Zacchaeus, when he realized that Jesus was so important that he would do anything for him, since Jesus alone could pull him out of the mire of sin and discontent. The paralysis of shame did not have the upper hand. The Gospel tells us that Zacchaeus “ran ahead”, “climbed” the tree, and then, when Jesus called him, he “hurried down” (vv. 4, 6). He took a risk, he put his life on the line. For us too, this is the secret of joy: not to stifle a healthy curiosity, but to take a risk, because life is not meant to be tucked away. When it comes to Jesus, we cannot sit around waiting with arms folded; he offers us life – we can’t respond by thinking about it or “texting” a few words! After his small stature, after the paralysis of shame, there was a third obstacle that Zacchaeus had to face. It was no longer an interior one, but was all around him. It was the grumbling of the crowd, who first blocked him and then criticized him: How could Jesus have entered his house, the house of a sinner! How truly hard it is to welcome Jesus, how hard it is to accept a “God who is rich in mercy” (Eph 2:4)! People will try to block you, to make you think that God is distant, rigid and insensitive, good to the good and bad to the bad. Instead, our heavenly Father “makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good” (Mt 5:45). He demands of us real courage: the courage to be more powerful than evil by loving everyone, even our enemies. People may laugh at you because you believe in the gentle and unassuming power of mercy. But do not be afraid. Think of the motto of these days: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy” (Mt 5:7). People may judge you to be dreamers, because you believe in a new humanity, one that rejects hatred between peoples, one that refuses to see borders as barriers and can cherish its own traditions without being self-centred or small-minded. Don’t be discouraged: with a smile and open arms, you proclaim hope and you are a blessing for our one human family, which here you represent so beautifully!

XVIII DOMINGOORDINARIO ORDINARIO XIX DOMINGO MENSAJE DEL PAPA FRANCISCO PARA LOS JÓVENES Y PARA TODOS NOSOTROS: Queridos jovenes: habeis venido a Cracovia para encontraros con Jesus. Y el Evangelio de hoy nos habla precisamente del encuentro entre Jesus y un hombre, Zaqueo, en Jerico (cf. Lc 19,1-10). Allí Jesus no se limita a predicar, o a saludar a alguien, sino que quiere —nos dice el Evangelista— cruzar la ciudad (cf. v. 1). Con otras palabras, Jesus desea acercarse a la vida de cada uno, recorrer nuestro camino hasta el final, para que su vida y la nuestra se encuentren realmente. Tiene lugar así el encuentro mas sorprendente, el encuentro con Zaqueo, jefe de los «publicanos», es decir, de los recaudadores de impuestos. Así que Zaqueo era un rico colaborador de los odiados ocupantes romanos; era un explotador de su pueblo, uno que debido a su mala fama no podía ni siquiera acercarse al Maestro. Sin embargo, el encuentro con Jesus cambio su vida, como sucedio, y cada Dos peregrinas esperan escuchar al Papa Francisco día puede suceder con cada uno de nosotros. Esta es una gran tentacion, que no solo tiene que ver con la autoestima, sino que afecta tambien la fe. Porque la fe nos dice que somos «hijos de Dios, pues ¡lo somos!» (1 Jn 3,1): hemos sido creados a su imagen; Jesus hizo suya nuestra humanidad y su corazon nunca se separara de nosotros; el Espíritu Santo quiere habitar en nosotros; estamos llamados a la alegría eterna con Dios. Esta es nuestra «estatura», esta es nuestra identidad espiritual: somos los hijos amados de Dios, siempre. Entendeis entonces que no aceptarse, vivir descontentos y pensar en negativo significa no reconocer nuestra identidad mas autentica: es como darse la vuelta cuando Dios quiere fijar sus ojos en mí; significa querer impedir que se cumpla su sueno en mí. Dios nos ama tal como somos, y no hay pecado, defecto o error que lo haga cambiar de idea. Para Jesus —nos lo muestra el Evangelio—, nadie es inferior y distante, nadie es insignificante, sino que todos somos predilectos e importantes: ¡Tu eres importante! Y Dios cuenta contigo por lo que eres, no por lo que tienes: ante el, nada vale la ropa que llevas o el telefono movil que utilizas; no le importa si vas a la moda, le importas tu, tal como eres. A sus ojos, vales, y lo que vales no tiene precio. Zaqueo tenía un segundo obstaculo en el camino del encuentro con Jesus: la vergüenza paralizante. Sobre esto hemos dicho algo ayer por la tarde. Podemos imaginar lo que sucedio en el corazon de Zaqueo antes de subir a aquella higuera, habra tenido una lucha afanosa: por un lado, la curiosidad buena de conocer a Jesus; por otro, el riesgo de hacer una figura bochornosa. Zaqueo era un personaje publico; sabía que, al intentar subir al arbol, haría el ridículo delante de todos, el, un jefe, un hombre de poder, pero muy odiado. Pero supero la verguenza, porque la atraccion de Jesus era mas fuerte. Habreis experimentado lo que sucede cuando una persona se siente tan atraída por otra que se enamora: entonces sucede que se hacen de buena gana cosas que nunca se habrían hecho. Algo similar ocurrio en el corazon de Zaqueo, cuando sintio que Jesus era de tal manera importante que habría hecho cualquier cosa por el, porque el era el unico que podía sacarlo de las arenas movedizas del pecado y de la infelicidad. Y así, la verguenza paralizante no triunfo: Zaqueo —nos dice el Evangelio— «corrio mas adelante», «subio» y luego, cuando Jesus lo llamo, «se dio prisa en bajar» (vv. 4.6.). Se arriesgo y actuo. Esto es tambien para nosotros el secreto de la alegría: no apagar la buena curiosidad, sino participar, porque la vida no hay que encerrarla en un cajon. Ante Jesus no podemos quedarnos sentados esperando con los brazos cruzados; a el, que nos da la vida, no podemos responderle con un pensamiento o un simple «mensajito». Despues de la baja estatura y despues de la verguenza paralizante, hay un tercer obstaculo que Zaqueo tuvo que enfrentar, ya no en su interior sino a su alrededor. Es la multitud que murmura, que primero lo bloqueo y luego lo critico: Jesus no tenía que entrar en su casa, en la casa de un pecador. ¿Que difícil es acoger realmente a Jesus, que duro es aceptar a un «Dios, rico en misericordia» (Ef 2,4). Puede que os bloqueen, tratando de haceros creer que Dios es distante, rígido y poco sensible, bueno con los buenos y malo con los malos. En cambio, nuestro Padre «hace salir su sol sobre malos y buenos» (Mt 5,45), y nos invita al valor verdadero: ser más fuertes que el mal amando a todos, incluso a los enemigos. Puede que se rían de vosotros, porque creeis en la fuerza mansa y humilde de la misericordia. No tengais miedo, pensad en cambio en las palabras de estos días: «Bienaventurados los misericordiosos, porque ellos alcanzaran misericordia» (Mt 5,7). Puede que os juzguen como unos sonadores, porque creeis en una nueva humanidad, que no acepta el odio entre los pueblos, ni ve las fronteras de los países como una barrera y custodia las propias tradiciones sin egoísmo y resentimiento. No os desanimeis: con vuestra sonrisa y vuestros brazos abiertos predica is la esperanza y sois una bendicion para la unica familia humana, tan bien representada por vosotros aquí.

The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into Heaven, before her body could begin to decay—a foretaste of our own bodily resurrection at the end of time. Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin's passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts. However, because this year it falls on a Monday, it is NOT considered a Holy Day of obligation in the US.

"LEARNING TO PRAY DAILY WITH THE SCRIPTURES" BY FR. FELIX Starting next month, Father Felix will give a series of talks that will teach us how to pray daily with the Scriptures. These will take place Thursdays, August 11, 18, 25, September 1, at 7 pm in Great Room. FUNFEST 2016: “DISCIPLES OF CHRIST’S LOVE”

Our annual Funfest Family Festival is AUGUST 27TH, and we need YOUR help to make it a success! Volunteers are needed for different booths, carnival games, set-up, clean-up, and more. To learn more or sign up to volunteer, stop by the Community Life table set up in the Gathering Space after Mass. Volunteer registration will be available after each Mass for the next few weeks.
