DISCIPLESHIP OF TREASURE COMMITMENT WEEKEND: THE BEGINNING OF A NEW RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, For the past few weeks, I have been talking about the importance of giving back to God in thanksgiving for our many blessings and trusting Him with everything, including our finances. Today, many of you are saying yes to the Lord’s call to follow Him with every aspect of your lives and are making a pledge to Him to give back to Him a portion of what He has blessed you with. Maybe you’ve never given before or have given the cash you have in your pocket—$5 here, $10 there, without much planning; and today for the first time, you are making it a commitment to give, putting an amount in writing, and placing it at the foot of the altar; maybe you’ve been giving consistently, but you’ve been scared to make a commitment, and today you are pledging to give a partial tithe; maybe you have been wanting something to change in your life, and have decided to take a leap of faith and are making a complete tithe for the first time; or maybe you have been tithing and are pledging to either continue doing so or to increase your giving. Whatever pledge you are making today, I thank you. You have realized that God has blessed you in innumerable ways and you’re making the choice to give Him thanks. Because of this choice, your relationship with God will change. It takes trust to truly tithe to God, but He never disappoints. When you give Him even just a bit of your trust, He’ll amaze you with what He does with it. I remember when I risked and let God free me from attachment to material goods. He provided! I didn’t lack anything. He took care of me and I was happier than I have ever been. The Lord is faithful. We can trust Him. The first reading from Sirach assures us of this: “He who serves willingly is heard; his petition reaches the heavens” (Sir 35:16). Our youth were also invited to make a pledge to God. Those who did, will begin receiving their own, special children’s collection envelopes; and at every Mass, we’ll make an altar call, asking the children to come forward to give their envelopes. All of the money collected from the children’s collection will go to the homeless youth at the Samaritan House in Denver. Parents, thank you for taking the time to help make your children generous givers. I invite you to make this a teaching moment for your children. Many times children don’t realize how blessed they are. This is an opportunity for you to guide them in seeing all the ways the Lord has blessed them, and teach them the importance of giving Him thanks for it and giving back to Him in gratitude. Your children will be giving back to God by caring for the needy in our community. If you are not making a pledge today, I encourage you to pray. We will keep the pledge cards in the pews for a week, and next weekend, you will have another opportunity to fill one out. This week, I invite you to prayerfully think of all of the different ways the Lord has blessed you and about what’s truly keeping you from giving back to Him. You may discover something you didn’t realize before – pride, an attachment to money, lack of trust in the Lord. Ask Him, and He will answer. The Lord knows what is in our hearts. Look at the two men in the Gospel. “One was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, ‘O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity -greedy, dishonest, adulterous -- or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.’ But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me a sinner’” (Lk 18:10-13). So as we continue our path toward becoming disciples of Christ, let’s not forget the most important thing we can do: pray. The Pharisee isn’t truly praying to God. Let’s pray that we may know the truth ourselves, like the tax collector: we receive and owe everything to God. We give from our own poverty, humility, and gratitude. In Christ,

COMPROMISO DE DISCIPULADO DE BIENES: EL PRINCIPIO DE UNA RELACIÓN NUEVA CON DIOS. Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo, Durante las ultimas semanas, he estado hablando sobre la importancia de darle a Dios en agradecimiento por todas nuestras bendiciones y de confiar en El en todo, incluyendo en nuestras finanzas. Hoy muchos le están diciendo "si" a la llamada del Señor a seguirlo con cada aspecto de sus vidas, haciéndole una promesa de darle una porción de lo que les ha dado. Tal vez nunca has dado, o has dado del cambio que traes en la bolsa—un día $5, otro día $10–sin realmente planearlo, y hoy, por primera vez, estas haciendo un compromiso de dar, poniendolo por escrito, y colocandolo al pie del altar; tal vez has estado dando consistentemente, pero has tenido miedo de hacer un compromiso, y hoy por primera vez estas prometiendo dar parte del diez por ciento; tal vez has estado buscando un cambio en tu vida, y hoy estas dando el diezmo completo por primera vez; tal vez has estado dando el diezmo y prometiste continuar a hacerlo o a aumentar lo que das. Cualquiera que sea su promesa hoy, les doy las gracias. Se han dado cuenta que Dios los ha bendecido de maneras innumerables y han decidido darle gracias. Tras esta decision, su relacion con Dios cambiara. El darle a Dios el diezmo requiere confianza, pero Él nunca nos defrauda. Cuando ponemos por lo menos un poco de nuestra confianza en Él, Él nos asombra con lo que hace. Yo mismo recuerdo cuando arriesgue y deje que Dios me liberara del apego a los bienes materiales. ¡Dios proveyo! No me hizo falta nada. El se encargo de mí y fui mas feliz de lo que jamas haya sido. El Senor es fiel. Podemos confiar en El. Nos lo dice la primera lectura: "Quien sirve a Dios con todo su corazon es oído y su plegaria llega hasta el cielo” (Eclesiastico 35:16). Nuestros jovenes tambien fueron invitados a hacerle una promesa a Dios. Aquellos que lo hagan comenzaran a recibir sus propios sobres especiales para ninos; y en cada Misa, haremos una llamada al altar, pidiendole a los ninos a pasar hacia adelante a dar sus sobres. Todo el dinero recaudado de la colecta de los niños irá a los niños sin hogar de la Casa Samaritana en Denver. Padres, gracias por tomarse el tiempo para ayudar a que sus hijos sean generosos. Los invito a que este sea un momento de aprendizaje para sus ninos. Muchas veces los niños no se dan cuenta de cuantas bendiciones tienen. Esta es una oportunidad para que los guíen en ver de cuantas maneras los ha bendecido el Señor, y de enseñarles la importancia de agradecerle y darle a Dios en gratitud. Sus ninos le daran a Dios al darle a los mas necesitados en nuestra comunidad. Si no han hecho una promesa hoy, los animo a que recen. Dejaremos las tarjetas de promesa en las bancas durante la proxima semana, y el proximo domingo, tendran otra oportunidad de llenar una. Esta semana, los invito a que consideren en oración, todas las menaras en las que El Señor los ha bendecido y sobre que realmente les impide darle a Dios. Quiza descubran algo de lo que no se habían dado cuenta antes – orgullo, apego al dinero, falta de confianza en Dios. Pídanle, y El res respondera. El Senor sabe que tenemos en nuestros corazones. Miren a los dos hombres del Evangelio: "Dos hombres subieron al templo para orar: uno era fariseo y el otro, publicano. El fariseo, erguido, oraba así en su interior: 'Dios mío, te doy gracias porque no soy como los demas hombres: ladrones, injustos y adulteros; tampoco soy como ese publicano. Ayuno dos veces por semana y pago el diezmo de todas mis ganancias'. El publicano, en cambio, se quedo lejos y no se atrevía a levantar los ojos al cielo. Lo unico que hacía era golpearse el pecho, diciendo: 'Dios mío, apiadate de mí, que soy un pecador'" (Eclesiastico 35:16). A medida que continuamos nuestro camino para convertirnos en discípulos de Cristo, no olvidemos lo más importante que podemos hacer: rezar. En el evangelio, el fariseo en realidad no estaba rezando. It is only natural when you are invited to a party – whether it is birthday, anniversary, homecoming or any other celebration – to think about the gift that you will bring. Even when the invitation Tithing Bible Quote of the week: says, “No gifts, please,” most of us still show up with a bottle of wine or a box “No one shall appear before the of candy or some other token of our Lord empty-handed, but each of affection. We bring gifts to show our you with as much as he can give, in gratitude for being invited and to proportion to the blessings which show our love for the one being the Lord, your God has bestowed honored and celebrated. on you.” (Deuteronomy 16:16-17). So, when God Himself invites you to the greatest celebration of all – the celebration of the Eucharist – do you bring a gift? Do you take time to wrap it in an envelope? Do you select a gift that truly reflects your gratitude for being invited to be a part of God’s family? Do you bring a gift that shows your love for the crucified Jesus, who we remember at every Mass? The invitation to the Mass does not say “No gifts, please.” In fact, since God first called the Israelites to be His people He taught them, “No one shall appear before the Lord empty-handed, but each of you with as much as he can give, in proportion to the blessings which the Lord, your God has bestowed on you.” Deuteronomy 16:16-17. Faithful Citizenship / Ciudadanía Fiel VOTING AS A CATHOLIC IN 2016: HOW SHOULD A CATHOLIC VOTE? As we get closer to Election Day, are you feeling discouraged or confused as to how to vote? You’re not alone. Archbishop Samuel Aquila wrote an article in the Denver Catholic (October 5, 2016) giving us all some guidance as we fill out our ballots. We’ve split up the article in several parts, which you will find here every week leading up to Nov. 8. This is part 2 of 4. This year there are some critical changes to the two major parties’ platforms that some at the dinner were not aware of. Most important is that this year the Democratic party platform calls for the overturning of the Hyde Amendment, a provision that both parties have voted to include in the federal budget and on other spending bills for 40 years. The Hyde Amendment prohibits federal taxpayer money from being used for abortion. The platform is aggressively pro-abortion, not only in funding matters, but in the appointment of only those judges who will support abortion and the repealing of the Helms Amendment, which prevents the U.S. from supporting abortion availability overseas. Conversely, the Republican party platform is supportive of the Hyde Amendment and just this year strengthened its support for life by calling for the defunding of Planned Parenthood, banning dismemberment abortion and opposing assisted suicide. Our conversation then turned to the understanding of the freedom of religion, the freedom of conscience, and the ability for faith-based organizations like the Church to provide charity through shelters, hospitals, homes for the elderly, etc., without fear of government interference and the existence of a respect for religious values. In that vein, the subject was raised of the Health and Human Services mandate. This regulation requires the provision of contraceptives, sterilizations and some abortifacients through employer’s health plans. Most surprising to me was that all at the table were practicing Catholics who are involved in their faith, and a couple of them had neither heard of the difficulty the Obama Administration has created for the Little Sisters of the Poor, nor the litigation that has occurred trying to force them to violate their consciences. Catholic voters must make themselves aware of where the parties stand on these essential issues. The right to life is the most important and fundamental right, since life is necessary for any of the other rights to matter. There are some issues that can legitimately be debated by Christians, such as which policies are the most effective in caring for the poor, but the direct killing of innocent human life must be opposed at all times by every follower of Jesus Christ. There are no legitimate exceptions to this teaching.

VOTANDO COMO CATÓLICO EN EL 2016: ¿CÓMO DEBE VOTAR UN CATÓLICO? ¿A medida que nos acercamos al día de las elecciones, te sientes desanimado o confundido en cuanto a cómo votar? No estas solo. El Arzobispo Samuel Aquila escribió un artículo en el Denver Catholic (5 de octubre de 2016) que nos da orientación, al llenar nuestras papeletas. Hemos dividido el artículo en varias partes, y las encontrarás aquí cada semana de aquí al 8 de noviembre. Esta es la segunda parte de 4. Este ano se han dado algunos cambios importantes en las plataformas de los dos principales partidos políticos de los cuales los asistentes a la cena no estaban al tanto. Lo más importante es que este año la plataforma del partido demócrata ha pedido la revocación de la Enmienda Hyde: una disposición aprobada por ambos partidos para ser incluida en el presupuesto federal y en otras leyes de gastos por 40 años. La Enmienda Hyde prohíbe que el dinero federal de los contribuyentes sea usado para el aborto. Esta plataforma es agresivamente pro–aborto, no solo en materia de financiacion sino en el hecho de buscar nombrar solamente jueces que apoyaran el aborto. Tambien piden la derogacion de la enmienda Helms, que prohíbe a los Estados Unidos apoyar el aborto en el extranjero. En cambio, la plataforma del partido republicano apoya la Enmienda Hyde y, precisamente este ano, ha reforzado su defensa de la vida pidiendo la suspension de fondos para Planned Parenthood, prohibiendo el aborto por desmembramiento y oponiendose al suicidio asistido. Nuestra conversacion luego cambio hacia el tema de la libertad religiosa, la libertad de conciencia y la capacidad de las organizaciones basadas en la fe, como la Iglesia, de practicar la caridad a traves de albergues, hospitales, residencias de ancianos, etc. sin miedo a la interferencia del gobierno y gozando del respeto a los valores religiosos. En esta misma línea, se planteo el tema del mandato del Departamento de Servicios Humanos y de Salud. La regulacion obliga a proveer de metodos de anticoncepcion, esterilizacion y algunos abortivos en el plan de salud de los empleados. Lo que mas me sorprendio fue que todos los participantes en esa cena eran catolicos comprometidos con su fe, y algunos de ellos no habían escuchado nada acerca de las dificultades que la administracion Obama había sometido a la comunidad de las Hermanitas de los Pobres (Little Sisters of the Poor), ni sobre el litigio que esto había producido al pretender forzarlas a violar sus conciencias. Los electores catolicos deben ser conscientes de lo que dicen los partidos políticos sobre temas esenciales. El derecho a la vida es el más importante y fundamental derecho ya que la vida es necesaria para cualquier otro derecho o asunto. Hay otros temas que pueden ser debatidos legítimamente entre los cristianos – como cuáles políticas son las más efectivas en el cuidado de los pobres – pero cada seguidor de Cristo debe oponerse en todo momento a la muerte directa infligida a un ser humano inocente. Y no hay excepciones legítimas en esta ensenanza.

Our food closet is always in need of canned or packaged goods - canned fruits, meats, tuna or chicken, canned vegetables, spaghetti sauce, spaghetti, and mac and cheese. Things like diapers (all sizes), and toiletry items, including paper goods are also much appreciated. What we don't spend on food can help more people with rent, utilities, food certificates for perishable items, bus tickets and other needs. We are so appreciative of your continuing support through the Poor Box. We couldn't continue our mission without you.

The last Anointing of the Sick for 2016 will be on: Tuesday , November 7th during the 8am & 12:10pm Masses. Please check the bulletin in early January for the 2017 schedule of the Anointing of the Sick.
