Unity in Diversity

We the community of Our Lady of Peace Parish are a welcoming Catholic family, richly diverse in culture and language, who have chosen to come together because of our common faith in Jesus Christ. Grounded in Baptism, in Word, and Eucharist, we are committed to give ourselves in service to share the Gospel message of hope and new life, and to support one another in living our faith in the world.

Sunday Reflection Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Last Sunday, we had a beautiful experience of praise and worship during our confirmation and youth ministry XLT. The theme was on forgiving others and forgiving ourselves as Marlene Pinel shared her personal stories of how we have to let God’s mercy work through the “misery” that we sometimes experience. We concluded the night with adoration and simply resting in the presence of our Lord and receiving his mercy and love. Thank you Marlene for your sharing and for our confirmation team for providing this night of prayer. As we continue into the third Sunday of Lent, I have written about the importance of prayer and fasting in the last two bulletins. Hopefully, you have had a chance to allow these practices to be a part of your Lenten sacrifice. (One addition to fasting, abstinence of meat on Fridays is required of all who are 14 years old and up. Fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory to those who are 18 to 59.) Today, I wish to share some thoughts about the third penitential practice – almsgiving. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that almsgiving is “a witness to fraternal charity" and "a work of justice pleasing to God." (CCC. 2462). The first part reminds us that we are one. We are all sons and daughters of God. In a great way, we demonstrate our union as a Church as we partake in “communion” uniting ourselves with Christ and our brothers and sisters as the “Body of Christ.” The fraternal life we live reminds us of the whole and how we must respond to the needs of others in charity. And charity comes in different forms. The easiest is monetary and goods in providing an immediate solution to a situation. But, charity also can come by spending time with others, listening to others and comforting others. These are the corporal works of mercy. And, as we give alms, we give of ourselves to our brothers and sisters because in each of them we see the face of Christ for “whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40). This act of charity, this act of almsgiving, leads us to the second part as it is a great work of justice. When we are able to bring about peace and justice in the world, we are doing the work of God. We are being that instrument of mercy that we are called to be as our theme for the Year of Mercy is to be “merciful like the Father.” And God looks upon us and simply says, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” (Matt 25:21). Next weekend, we will have a chance to give alms through the Catholic Relief Services second collection. These funds assist the poor and respond to the effects of natural disasters and wars throughout the world. May our practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving draw us closer to Christ and to one another. Next week, we also begin our Lenten Mission. This mission is 6 days of prayer where you can enter into the season of Lent and be nourished spiritually. Deacon Luis Espinoza (our own seminarian) will be giving a talk on the mercy of God on Monday, 3/7 (English) and Tuesday, 3/8 (Spanish). We have Fr. Chuong, SBD who will speak on Wednesday, 3/9 (Vietnamese) and celebrate Holy Mass with the community. These nights begin at 7PM. Thursday, 3/10 is our Penance Service (@ 7:15PM) with about 20 priests to impart the mercy of Christ upon you. Friday, 3/11 we have a Lenten supper/fish fry from 5-8PM. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children, free for those under 5. The meal includes fish tacos, sides and a drink. It is a great opportunity for fellowship. And finally on Saturday, 3/12, we will gather after the morning mass (around 9:30AM) and drive over to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church to receive the plenary indulgence offered during this Year of Mercy. Please take advantage of these great opportunities to do something different this Lent and to feed your soul. God bless always. Our Lady of Peace… pray for us.
