Notas Del Padre
The feast of Epiphany is traditionally celebrated 12 days after the feast of Christmas on January 6. However, in the United States, the Church calendar places it on the Sunday between Jan. 2 - Jan. 8. The word "Epiphany" means manifestation. The feast celebrates the divine manifestation of Jesus Christ to the magi who were in search of the New Born King. The magi were most likely Persian priest astrologers who could interpret the stars. Their quest had led them to Bethlehem. The magi presented symbolic gifts: Gold, a gift for a king. Frankincense, a gift for a priest and Myrrh, a burial ointment, a gift for one who would die. Their gifts acknowledge Jesus’ mission as the priest-king who would offer his life for his people. They came to adore and pay tribute to Him. The Epiphany reminds us that Jesus came for all people, for all cultures, for the whole world.
In many cultures, the feast of Epiphany is the day to exchange gifts and celebrate the birth of Christ. Another interesting tradition includes the blessing of homes by writing with blessed chalk on the lintel of a door the year and the following letters spaced with crosses like this: 20+C+M+B+17. The letters stand for the traditional names of the 3 magi - Gaspar, Melchior, Balthazar - or a Latin phrase Christus Mansionem Benedicat which means May Christ bless this home. This practice reminds everyone that Christ is welcomed in their home.
As we conclude the Christmas Season tomorrow with the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, let us be thankful for the many Christmas graces we have received. Let us renew our commitment and dedication to welcoming Christ into our hearts and our lives. May His presence transform us and strengthen us in our spiritual journey.
Have a good week.
