And amongst the painted roses of the cloak, her beloved image she has left upon it.

St. Lucia was a young Christian martyr who died during the Diocletianic Persecution. She is venerated as a saint by the Roman Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, and Orthodox Churches. She is one of eight women, who along with the Blessed Virgin Mary, are commemorated by name in the Canon of the Mass. Her feast day, known as Saint Lucy's Day, is celebrated in the West on 13 December. St. Lucia of Syracuse was honored in the Middle Ages and remained a well-known saint in early modern England. Lucy's feast is on 13 December, in Advent. Her feast once coincided with the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, before calendar reforms, so her feast day has become a festival of light.

The Lord is Near...

Our Lady of Guadalupe

There is much significant symbolism in the image of Our Lady on St. Juan Diego’s cloak. She is beautifully appropriate to have in the church during Advent because she is the only approved apparition where Mary is a pregnant maiden. The black sash she wears is what noblewomen of the time wore when they were pregnant. There is also a four-petaled flower on her tummy that signifies motherhood. But she has her hair down and loose, not braided, which symbolizes that she is a virgin. All of this combined with her being in front of the rays of the sun show that her God is greater than the Aztec sun god and that she would give birth to the true God of the sun who eclipses what they believed in. Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.

Take the Gospel home with you! Share a conversation with the family on the car ride home or at dinner tonight. In today’s readings, we are reminded to be patient and wait for the Lord. We need to prepare for Jesus to come at Christmas and also at the end of the world. The Gospel tells us that our God is not a God who shows His power by coming to earth in “fine clothing.” God did not use His kingly authority to amass a great fortune, eat the finest foods, or raise a giant earthly army. Instead He lived in great humility, laying as a baby in a trough used for animal food and living simply, serving others through His time on earth. Jesus shows us that the greatest power is found in humility. One way we can be humble is to go to the Sacrament of Confession, which our church is offering this coming Tuesday at 6 p.m. We are also called to serve others and not grab at earthly power. On this Gaudete Sunday, or Joy Sunday, let’s remember that only Jesus can bring us true joy. We need to choose to follow Jesus over the earthly powerful people. Take a step back and pray about how to choose joy and follow Him better this Advent. Watch Bishop Robert Barron’s “Bishop Barron on Christmas” youtube video for more reflection. Don’t forget, if your K-5th grade child is in Sacrament prep classes and is preparing to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation this year, their Penance Service will be Tuesday, December 13 from 6-8 p.m.
