From the Principal’s Desk Dear Parents: I know I have said this before, but – I cannot believe how fast the school year is going! Sandburg students are quickly approaching the end of the first trimester! Make sure you look for your childʼs first trimester report card on Monday, November 21st. Please find some time to review your childʼs grades and talk with him or her about their progress at school. Donʼt forget you can always talk about grades, attendance or activities with your son or daughter by logging on to Power School

Monthly Newsletter or their teacherʼs website. If you lost your log in or password, please contact the main office at Sandburg for instructions on how to receive a new log in and password. With the school year flying by, I am impressed with how the students have stepped into leadership roles finding success in a variety of activities. The Sandburg student body has really outdone itself these first few months of school! The Carl Sandburg Middle School Tiger Marching Band did a great job in the Mundelein High School Homecoming Parade. The CSMS band also qualified several Sandburg students to participate in the IEMA Honor Band! As always the Tiger Band is loud and proud! Sandburgʼs 6 – 8th grade cross-country team had an outstanding season. Both the boy and girlʼs teams qualified for the IESA State Meet. It is the first time since 2005 that Sandburg has qualified both teams for state. The boyʼs won Class AA Sectional Meet and the girls took third in the AA sectional Meet. The Lady Tigers 7 & 8th Grade Volleyball team also had a

great season. Not only did they play well, they also raised over $150 to help find a cure for breast cancer. Sandburgʼs NJHS sponsored a “Haunted Hallway” during the After School Coalition Red Ribbon Dance. It was wonderful to see all the students come out and have fun while supporting a drug free attitude. The Sandburg student council was asked to partner with the Chatwells Kitchen staff. Chartwells provides the breakfast and lunch service at CS and all District 75 schools. The student council met with Mrs. Malchow, the kitchen manager, to explore ways to help students make healthy lunch choices, as well as, continue to enhance the Chartwells program providing healthy well balance meals. I am so proud of the work the Sandburg students are involved in during the beginning of the school year. Way to go tigers! With all of that great news, Sandburg is not stopping! CSMS is continuing its strive for excellence in November! The boy and girlsʼ basketball teams had tryouts and are ready to begin practice. Our 5th grade students in the district put on a

“Demonstration Band” Concert on October 19th. Sandburg 6, 7, & 8th Grade Concert Bands are gearing up for their fall performances on December 6 & 7 at 7pm in the CS North Gym. Come on out for some great tiger tunes! Homework club is meeting every Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday in the library - Your students can lighten that homework load by getting it done before leaving school! Sandburgʼs Science Olympiad Team is starting and getting their

team together for competition. The CSMS student council is gearing up to welcome its local area Senior Citizens by hosting a Senior Breakfast on Friday, November 11 at 9:00am. If a grandparent early for the holidays or you know a Mundelein community senior citizen invite them out for breakfast at Sandburg. For more information check out the CSMS website or contact Ms. Wentink, Mrs. Blue or a Sandburg student council Representative.

I urge every student to come out this winter and get involved at Sandburg. It is a tigerriffic place to be! I look forward to a great stretch of learning and activities as we enter into the winter and holiday season! Mark Pilut, Principal

Give your child encouragement and control over homework You might have a difficult time finding a middle school student who simply adores doing homework. But your child can have a positive feeling about his homework, and much of that depends on whether he feels he has control over it. A study found that middle schoolers have definite preferences about homework. They would rather: Do homework somewhere besides home. Do homework when their peers are around. Have their parents be less involved with their homework. So what can you do to support your child? You can: • Check your child's achievement at school. Is he doing fairly well? If so, consider allowing him to choose where he completes homework, on occasion. • Provide encouragement. Say things like, "I see you are getting your homework done on a regular basis. Your teachers say you have turned in homework every day this month. It's great to hear about your hard work.

Important Notes From Nurse Adams Attention Parents of 6th Grade Students:

Keep your child motivated in school all year! It's too early in the school year for your middle schooler to have a ho-hum attitude about class! Instead, he should be looking forward to the months ahead. You can help him do just that, and keep him motivated, if you: •

Let yourself be "wowed." Do you give off a "been there, done that" vibe when your child tells you about something he's learning in school? Stop! A fact or idea may not be new to you, but if it's new to your child, show some enthusiasm. "Your science teacher poured liquid nitrogen on a flower and it froze? Just like that? How cool!" • Celebrate small victories. Yes, scoring 100 percent on a math test is a reason for high-fives all around. But so is a solid B on a history project your child worked hard on. Show him that you notice the effort he's putting in, and it may motivate him to keep trying his best. Only congratulating your child for A's may squash his enthusiasm by causing him to think, "Why bother trying at all if only ʻperfect' matters?"

Reprinted with permission from Parents Still make the difference!

All 6th grade students are required by the ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH to have a complete physical on file with the School Nurse, NO LATER THAN OCTOBER 15th of 2011. Students also need a complete dental exam. If your child's physical is not turned in the child may not attend school. Appointment cards are not accepted. New Students from Out of State: These students have 30 days from registration to turn in a physical exam, dental exam, and an eye exam. They may not start school without proof of immunizations. Sports Physicals: Any student participating in an interscholastic sport is required to have a sports physical on file. Most 6th grade students are compliant with their physicals, if the physical is current. Sports physicals are only valid for one year. Students need a NEW SPORTS PHYSICAL ANNUALLY if they are competin g in any sport at Carl Sandburg Middle School. Please contact Michelle Adams R.N., at (847) 949-2707 or email [email protected].

GEARING UP FOR SUCCESS... Your student's first and foremost goal is to achieve academic success. Sandburg offers students many after school activities to participate in, ranging from competitive athletics, to clubs, to school dances. However, students must first be successful in their class work before participating in any after school activities. If your student is not achieving academically, he or she will not be allowed to participate in after school activities. At the end of the school year, each grade level has year-end activities for their students. In order to participate in those activities, in addition to the state's promotion requirements, students must also meet Sandburg's academic expectations in the following six areas: ! ! ! ! ! !

Language Arts Math Science Social Studies Physical Education/Health Related Arts

In order to participate in the end of the year activities, your student cannot receive a cumulative failing grade in two or more of these areas. End of the year activities for the 6th & 7th grades include a year-end field trip. For 8th grade, the activities include the promotion ceremony, 8th grade dance, and a year-end field trip. Sandburg reserves the right to hold any student out of activities for gross misconduct, as outlined in the Sandburg Parent Handbook. The Sandburg staff is committed to guiding and supporting your student to academic excellence. It is our hope that ALL Sandburg students will be able to enjoy the end of the year activities. If you have any questions regarding the end of the year expectations, please call me. Thank you, Mark Pilut Principal Let us hear from you! As a valued part of our school system, your ideas and concerns are being solicited.
