Curioso por saber sobre el parque de los animales Build Background Read the title to children, and point out the image of Jorge el Curioso. Remind children that Jorge el Curioso is a monkey character from children’s books, and explain that he is visiting a special kind of park where wild animals live. Tell them that the eagle on the cover is a wild bird. Have children talk about the difference between wild animals and pets. Then ask: ¿Alguna vez han visto animales salvajes? ¿Qué tipos de animales salvajes han visto?

Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, helping with unfamiliar words so that they can read the text successfully. Point out the sentence pattern repeated on each page: Mira este/esta. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that this book shows Jorge el Curioso looking at different wild animals at a special wild animal park. On every page, Jorge finds another wild animal. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. ¿Qué animal salvaje se ve en esta foto? Jorge dice: Mira este león. Los leones son fuertes. Digan este. La palabra este comienza con el sonido /e/ y la letra e. Señalen la palabra este y vuelvan a decirla. Page 3: Vayan a la página 3. ¿Qué animal ve Jorge en esta página? Sí, Jorge ve una tortuga. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Have children name the letters in a word in order.

Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: • Listening Game Have children listen for words that rhyme with son. Say son and another word. Have children raise their hands if the two words rhyme and keep their hands in their laps if the words do not rhyme. Words to use: con, mira, esta, león, ratón, ave, tortuga, botón, canción, volar. • Initial Sounds Have children listen for the first sound as you say the name of two animals, such as león and lagarto, emphasizing the beginning consonant sound. Help children recognize that both words begin with the same sound. Then, name different couples of animals and have children raise their hands if they both begin with the same sound. Words to use: tortuga and tigre; ave and serpiente; oso and liebre; pantera and puma. • Build a Word Materials: magnetic or cardboard letters. Building Vocabulary Animals Build on the animal names in Curioso por saber sobre el parque de los animales to talk about wild animals that live locally. Suggested language: Cuando salimos, podemos ver animales salvajes. ¿Podemos ver aves? ¿Qué tipo de aves podemos ver? ¿Qué otros animales podemos ver? As children suggest animal names, write the words on the board or chart paper. Begin the list with the words: Mira este/esta. (Possible suggestions: ardilla, paloma, petirrojo, cuervo, pato, ardilla listada, pez, tortuga, zorrillo, conejo, ciervo) Read the completed list aloud with children, pointing to each word. ¡Miren todos los animales que podemos ver!
