FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK JUST MAN Joseph was quiet, honest and hardworking. He had no excuses, complaint or arrogance for his role in life, that of being the husband of Mary, the foster father of Jesus. He was just a man. He was a just man. *** In a time when it was not easy to believe, he believed. He was a man of faith! He didn’t talk about it. He walked it. He lived it. He only had a dream to go on. If someone would have asked him to explain the reasons for marrying Mary despite the fact that she was already pregnant before they even lived together, he would not have known how to answer. No, he would not have told them about the dream. They would not understand that he based his decision on a dream. He would have looked like a fool. If ever he was asked, I would like to believe that he simply gave a shrug of the shoulder, the universal signal that says, “That’s just how things are.” *** Yes, the dream would not have made sense to others .But Joseph trusted in the dream. So he braced himself for the role of a family provider, working hard to put bread on the table and protection to Mary and the soon-to-be born Jesus. *** He lived in simplicity. He had no time nor even the inclination to sit around with the wise and the learned sipping tea and discussing about the bigger issues of life. He was just focused on being a man of the house, concerned about mundane things like fixing a leaking roof or putting the donkey to pasture. He was just a man. He was a just man. *** If you have such a man in the house, be it a husband, father, uncle, brother, son, cousin or nephew, consider yourself fortunate. These are the people whose deep faith, love for work and dedication to family keep society stable and strong. *** A husband said, “On payday, I just hand my wife the check. I take nothing for myself.” A male confirmation student said, “I treat girls with respect and am always conscious of my behavior when I am with them.” *** Alex Vega, 22 years old, died with his girlfriend Michela in that tragic Oakland warehouse fire that claimed the lives of 36 artists and musicians. Alex was in the confirmation class 2007. Asked what she missed most about him, his mother Maria said, “When waking up in the morning or when he returns home from work, he would walk up to me, rumple my hair and say, ‘What’s up, mom?’ It was his way of showing care and affection.

Si alguien le hubiera pedido que explicara las razones para casarse con María a pesar de que ya estaba embarazada antes de que vivieran juntos, no habría sabido cómo responder. No, él no les habría hablado del sueño. No entenderían que él basó su decisión en un sueño. Habría parecido un tonto. Si alguna vez le preguntaron, me gustaría creer que simplemente se encogió de hombros, la señal universal que dice: "Así son las cosas". *** Sí, el sueño no tendría sentido para los demás. Pero José confió en el sueño. Así que se preparó para el papel de un proveedor de la familia, trabajando duro para poner el pan sobre la mesa y la protección de María y Jesús nacido. *** Vivía en la sencillez. SUMMONED BY GOD As Christmas draws near, Advent's scriptures lure us into a world of dreams, signs, wonders, and the miracle of the virgin birth. Too o en we allow the great stories of our faith, the ones that are most familiar, simply to wash over us. Today's Gospel account of the events leading up to the birth of the Lord reads like a present-day soap opera. Yet Joseph's courage, even in the midst of what must have been an incredibly confusing me, provides a model for us. Each week, we are summoned by God to embrace the way of goodness and truth through the proclama on of God's holy word. Like Joseph, we are called to do as the Lord commands us. As we stand at the threshold of Christmas, let us have the courage to be open to whatever it is that the Lord will require of us as we celebrate the miracle of Bethlehem. Copyright (c) J. S. When we are so busy with the hec c demands of the season, we might forget to seek some quite me with the Lord. We might engage in shopping, holiday food prepara on, tree decora ng, gi wrapping, mailing Christmas cards, partying and a million other things. But if Jesus were not the reason for the season, we would have no need of these extra ac vi es. Paying a en on to Our Lady and wai ng with Our Lady is what Advent is all about. The expecta on of the birth of Jesus brings hope to a world so distracted by materialism, poli cs and secularism. Suddenly Christmas has become an opportunity for store/internet vendors to ply their latest goods, expand their hours, and offer BOGO sales. "Christ's mass" has become one long commercial from before Halloween to a er 3 Kings Day. We cannot let commercialism hijack the seemingly most joyful, peaceful me of the year. We should not let "Merry Christmas" become " Happy Holidays", because the Holy Day (holiday) is Christ's mass. Secularism wants to drive Christ, Chris ans and any men on of religion from the public square. But Catholics are part of the public and we should have a voice during Advent. We need to step back and wait with Our Lady. The spirit of Advent largely consists in living close to her during the me she is carrying Jesus in her womb. Mary did not run around shopping, and preparing for the baby. She simply let God's will unfold. In fact she had to leave town hurriedly at the most awkward me, taking nothing but the fruit of her womb. Giving birth outdoors in a stable, amidst strangers, in piercing cold weather with nothing but the breath of the animals to keep them warm. Not exactly ideal condi ons in which to give birth. But extraordinary as this was, it was so necessary for our salvaon. And the world will never be the same again. "We can think of our whole life as a somewhat longer advent, a Ɵme of waiƟng for that definiƟve moment when we will at last find ourselves with God forever." Francis Fernandez Carvajal

Cuando estamos tan ocupados con las demandas de la temporada, podríamos olvidarnos de buscar empo con el Señor. Podemos par cipar en las compras, la preparación de alimentos de vacaciones, decoración de árboles, envoltura de regalos, tarjetas postales, fiesta y un millón de otras cosas. Pero si Jesús no era la razón de la estación, no tendríamos ninguna necesidad de estas ac vidades adicionales. Prestar atención a Nuestra Señora y esperar con Nuestra Señora es lo que es el Adviento. La esperanza del nacimiento de Jesús trae esperanza a un mundo tan distraído por el materialismo, la polí ca y el secularismo. De repente, la Navidad se ha conver do en una oportunidad para que los vendedores de endas / Internet ofrezcan sus úl mas novedades, amplíen sus horas y ofrezcan ventas de BOGO. "La masa de Cristo" se ha conver do en un largo anuncio desde antes de Halloween hasta después de 3 Reyes Día. No podemos permi r que el mercan lismo saquee la época aparentemente más alegre y pacífica del año. No debemos dejar que "Feliz Navidad" se convierta en "Felices Fiestas", porque el Día Santo (día de fiesta) es la misa de Cristo. El secularismo quiere conducir a Cristo, a los cris anos ya cualquier mención de la religión desde la plaza pública. Pero los católicos son parte del público y debemos tener una voz durante el Adviento. Necesitamos retroceder y esperar con Nuestra Señora. El espíritu de Adviento consiste principalmente en vivir cerca de ella durante el empo que lleva a Jesús en su vientre. María no andaba por las endas y se preparaba para el bebé. Simplemente dejo que la voluntad de Dios se desarrolle. De hecho, tuvo que abandonar la ciudad apresuradamente en el momento más di cil, sin tomar nada más que el fruto de su vientre. Dar a luz al aire libre en un establo, en medio de extraños, en el frío con nada más que el aliento de los animales para mantenerlos calientes. No exactamente las condiciones ideales para dar a luz. Pero por extraordinario que fuera, era tan necesario para nuestra salvación. Y el mundo nunca volverá a ser el mismo. "Podemos pensar en toda nuestra vida como un advenimiento algo más largo, un Ɵempo de espera para ese momento definiƟvo en el que por fin nos encontraremos con Dios para siempre".
