The Hospitality Committee provides a warm welcome to families and adults who are new to our parish. Members of this ministry make a personal phone call to each newly registered family and provide information packets to new members. Welcome Receptions for new parishioners are held on a quarterly basis.

In addition to being the welcoming arm of the parish, the Hospitality Committee assists with various social events held at the Church. Latin Mass Class – What is Sacred Music? When: July 27th, 7pm Where: St. Ann Catholic Church (Allen Center Cafeteria), 3635 Park Road, Charlotte St. Ann parish will host its second Latin Mass class on Wednesday July 27 at 7pm in the St. Ann Allen Center Cafeteria. This class will explore the role of Sacred Music in the Latin Mass and will be presented by Stefano Monaco, St. Ann’s choir member, with introduction by pastor Fr. Timothy Reid. The presentation will answer many questions including:  What is Sacred Music and how does it differ from religious music?  How did Gregorian chant develop?  What is the role of Sacred Music in the Sacrifice of the Mass? Class will be preceded by 6pm Latin Mass in the church and a light dinner will be served by the Charlotte Latin Mass Community. Class is open to newcomers and regulars alike. While the event is free, an RSVP is greatly appreciated by July 25th.

Secretarial Position Opening Debbie Davis, our parish secretary for 25 years, will be retiring at the end of July. Therefore, we will have an open part-time secretarial position at St. Michael’s beginning in August. The applicant must have excellent people skills, computer skills, and have comfortable facility in both English and Spanish. Please submit your resume to Fr Buettner by July 15.

   Door Lock / Card Key System St. Michael’s Safety and Security Commission has recently reviewed the security and access related to our doors around the Church campus. After much research, they have recommended a key card access system. With gratitude to the Knights of Columbus for the necessary funding, we’re excited to announce that the new system has been approved. Also, this year’s school spring fundraiser (The Global Games) raised the money to pay for the same security to be expanded for the school and gym! This new system will enable us to provide better access and better security on campus. We’re working on the timeline for installation, but we expect the new system to be installed this summer. All the door locks will be re-keyed, making all existing keys obsolete. Those who need access to any particular building will be issued a key card that allows access for the specific time needed. Here is the plan for each building: Church: The front left side door (next to the pastor’s office) will be the card access door for the Church since it is next to the alarm pad. The main front doors of the Church will continue to be unlocked during Mass and business hours Monday through Friday. Access cards will be programmed and issued to all who need access for the specific times needed. Parish Center: The front doors of the Parish Center will have a card reader. Cards will be issued to those who lead events in the Parish Center. Kitchen in the Parish Center: Access to the Kitchen will require card access and will be given as needed to those who host events that use the kitchen. Knight’s closet: A card reader will be added that will allow those authorized to have access. Gym: The main front door will get a card reader. Cards will be issued to those who hold events in the Gym. School: The three sets of double exterior doors will have card readers. Cards will be issued to teachers and staff. Church Hall & Old Church: Both will have a card reader in the future. In the meantime, new locks and non -duplicable key will be installed. Important: If you have a need for a Key Card to access any of the buildings, or need a key to any of the closets, please stop by the Church Office to fill out a Key Request Form. Once we firm up the date of installation, we will let everyone know when to collect your new key card. Love to Bake? You are invited! On Sunday, 16 July 1251, Our Lady appeared to St. Simon Stock and presented him with a gift. She held out a cloth scapular to him and said, “Receive, beloved son, this scapular of your order, as a badge of my confraternity and for you and all the Carmelites a special sign of grace; whoever dies in this garment shall not suffer everlasting fire. It is the sign of salvation, a safeguard in dangers, a pledge of peace and of the covenant.” The scapular, which is a garment that hangs down the front and back, came to be a symbol of dedication to the Blessed Virgin Mary, devout trust in her maternal protection, and the desire to imitate the virtues of Jesus and Mary. The scapular is not a good luck charm or a superstition, but a sacramental garment that indicates membership in a confraternity, a spiritual bond that unites the faithful in love with God and with one another. Countless popes, priests, religious, lay faithful, and above all, saints, have given ample testimony of the importance of the scapular and encouraged all Christians to be clothed in this sign of divine protection and love. Next Saturday, 16 July, the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, you are invited to be enrolled in the scapular after the Missa Cantata at 10 am to receive all the privileges, graces, spiritual benefits, and assistance afforded to those who wear the brown scapular. You can purchase a scapular at Seven Gifts, now located in the back of the church across from the lady’s restroom, or bring your own. The scapular will be blessed and you and your family can be enrolled at the ceremony. On 16 July, 2001, the 750th anniversary of the Carmelite Scapular, St. John Paul II wrote a letter to the Carmelites to commemorate the event. He said, “The Marian patrimony of Carmel has become, over time, through the spread of the devotion of the Holy Scapular, a treasure for the whole Church. For its simplicity, for its anthropological value and for the relationship with Mary as regards the Church and humanity, this devotion has been profoundly and widely grasped by the people of God…” He also admitted, “I also carry the scapular on my heart…for the love that it nurtures toward the common heavenly mother, whose protection is continually springing forth.” On Saturday, 16 July at 10 am, You are invited to receive this great gift that has been embraced by Christians for nearly 800 years!

El buen samaritano iba de camino Lucas 10, 25-37. Tiempo Ordinario. Amar al prójimo no es muy fácil, porque requiere darse a los demás, sin ninguna distinción.

Oración introductoria Señor, dame la sabiduría y el amor para descubrir y actuar, buscando el bien de los demás, en las diversas situaciones de mi vida cotidiana. No permitas que el ajetreo de mis pendientes me haga pasar de largo y no ver a esa persona que necesita que me detenga a platicar con ella para darle consuelo o simplemente una sonrisa. Petición Señor, concédeme un corazón grande para ayudar a todos, en todo momento. Meditación del Papa Francisco En cambio el samaritano, cuando vio a ese hombre, “sintió compasión” dice el Evangelio. Se acercó, le vendó las heridas, poniendo sobre ellas un poco de aceite y de vino; luego lo cargó sobre su cabalgadura, lo llevó a un albergue y pagó el hospedaje por él... En definitiva, se hizo cargo de él: es el ejemplo del amor al prójimo. Pero, ¿por qué Jesús elige a un samaritano como protagonista de la parábola? Porque los samaritanos eran despreciados por los judíos, por las diversas tradiciones religiosas. Sin embargo, Jesús muestra que el corazón de ese samaritano es bueno y generoso y que —a diferencia del sacerdote y del levita— él pone en práctica la voluntad de Dios, que quiere la misericordia más que los sacrificios. Dios siempre quiere la misericordia y no la condena hacia todos. Quiere la misericordia del corazón, porque Él es misericordioso y sabe comprender bien nuestras miserias, nuestras dificultades y también nuestros pecados. A todos nos da este corazón misericordioso. El samaritano hace precisamente esto: imita la misericordia de Dios, la misericordia hacia quien está necesitado. (S.S. Francisco, 14 de julio de 2013) Reflexión Muchas lecciones les ha dado Nuestro Señor a los fariseos, pero ninguna tan bella como ésta. Es de esas ocasiones en las que Cristo da a conocer su doctrina y su mandamiento a todos los hombres, y lo hace de manera muy velada. Amar al prójimo no es muy fácil, porque requiere donarse a los demás, y ese donarse cuesta, porque no a todos los tratamos o queremos de la misma manera. Por ello tenemos que lograr amar a todos por igual, sin ninguna distinción. Quererlos a todos, sin preferir a nadie. Es difícil mas no imposible. Dios nos ha dado el ejemplo al vivir su propia doctrina: "no hay amor más grande que el que da la vida por sus amigos", pero Él no la dio solo por sus amigos, sino también por sus enemigos, y muchos santos han hecho lo mismo. Propósito Imitemos a Cristo en su vida de donación a los demás, y vivamos con confianza y constancia su mandamiento: "vete y haz tú lo mismo". Diálogo con Cristo Señor, Tú lo sabes todo: mi debilidad al amar a los demás, especialmente aquellos que están más cerca de mí, porque si hay impaciencia, si hay juicios temerarios, si hay indiferencia, no hay verdadero amor. Ayúdame a crecer en la convicción de que Tú me has creado para amar y servirte en esta vida y que sólo superando mi egoísmo mediante la vivencia del amor, podré gozar de Ti y alabarte eternamente en el cielo.

Si vamos a la India (Rito Sirio Malabancar & Rito Sirio Malabar) y a Egipto (Rito Cóptico) varemos que celebran la Eucaristía de formas distintas. ¿Por qué llamamos “padre” al sacerdote? Acaso no lo prohibió Jesús en Mateo 23, 8-10… “Ustedes, no se dejen llamar Maestro, porque no tienen más que un Maestro, y todos ustedes son hermanos. No llamen Padre a nadie en la tierra, porque ustedes tienen un solo Padre, el que está en el Cielo. Tampoco se dejen ustedes llamar Guía, porque ustedes no tienen más Guía que Cristo.” Para interpretar la Biblia correctamente hay que tener en cuenta varios factores: (hay que leer los versículos con su contexto…) Si se leen los versículos a continuación (11 & 12) se puede ver que el propósito de Jesús es enseñarnos que no debemos presumir y no creernos superiores por ser padres, maestros, catequistas, o líderes en algún ministerio de la Iglesia. “El más grande entre ustedes se hará el servidor de todos. Porque el que se pone por encima, será humillado, y el que se rebaja, será puesto en alto” (Mateo 23, 11-12). Hay que interpretar a la luz de la Biblia completa. San Pedro, San Pablo y San Juan se identifican así mismo como padres espirituales. San Pedro llama al Evangelista Marcos “hijo”: “La Iglesia de Babilonia, que ha sido elegida como ustedes, los saluda, lo mismo que mi hijo Marcos. Salúdense los unos a los otros con un beso de amor fraternal. Que descienda la paz sobre todos ustedes, los que están unidos a Cristo” (1Pe 5, 13). San Juan no se cansa de llamar a los bautizados de las comunidades cristianas. “Hijos, les escribo porque sus pecados han sido perdonados por el nombre de Jesús. Padres, les escribo porque ustedes conocen al que existe desde el principio. Jóvenes, les escribo porque ustedes han vencido al Maligno. Hijos, les he escrito porque ustedes conocen al Padre. Padres, les he escrito porque ustedes conocen al que existe desde el principio. Jóvenes, les he escrito porque son fuertes, y la Palabra de Dios permanece en ustedes, y ustedes han vencido al Maligno” (1Jn. 2, 12-14). Hay que entender la Palabra de Dios (Biblia) con la ayuda de la Tradición Apostólica. Las Fuentes de la Revelación Divina (Palabra de Dios) son la Tradición Apostólica (Palabra Hablada y Pregonada) y la Biblia (Palabra Escrita). “Jesús hizo también muchas otras cosas. Si se las relatara detalladamente, pienso que no bastaría todo el mundo para contener los libros que se escribirían” (Jn. 21, 25). Como ejemplo podemos utilizar el relato de la Verónica del Vía Crucis (sexta estación) es parte de la Tradición Oral de la Iglesia y no está en la Biblia.

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Baptisms are held at 2 pm on Saturdays. Baptism is the most important moment of our life. Infants should be baptized in the first few weeks. Parents AND godparents must attend the preparation class (held every 2nd Saturday) preferably before the child is born. Parents need to be registered in the parish, pledge to raise the child as a practicing Catholic, and must also be practicing the faith by attending Holy Mass every Sunday. Godparents are considered Catholic role models. Therefore, they must have received all sacraments, including Confirmation, and must be attending Holy Mass every Sunday. If they are married, they must have received the sacrament of Holy Matrimony in the Catholic Church. Please come to the parish office to register for the class and bring a copy of the child’s birth certificate when it becomes available.

SACRAMENT OF HOLY MATRIMONY Couples should make an appointment with the priest at the time of engagement, and at least six months before any proposed wedding date to begin preparations. The couple should be registered, active members of our parish, which means that all Catholic parties are attending Holy Mass every Sunday, contributing to the financial needs of the parish, and are engaged in the spiritual and social life of our parish family. All Weddings are celebrated inside the Church on Saturday at 10 AM or 12 PM.
