Girls on the Run Ways to Get Involved! -Inspire girls as a Coach Coaching requires a commitment of 90 minutes twice a week for 10 weeks. You choose the days. We provide the curriculum, training, and First Aid/CPR. The Sisters of St. Francis’ missioners will be speaking at Sunday Masses on July 9th and 10th. The Sisters serve those who are poor, with foreign missions in Mexico and home missions in Appalachia. In remote areas of Mexico they work to build faith communities where there are no priests for regular Sunday Masses. Sisters also give children living in extreme poverty the opportunity to obtain an education plus emergency needs of food and medicine. Appalachian ministries include faith development and pastoral care, adult literacy, and emergency outreach of food, clothing, and shelter for the poor. Please help make a difference in the lives of people suffering from poverty with your prayers and financial support.

As some of you already know, there are nine seminarians, including our own Aaron Huber, that will be attending the St. Joseph’s College Seminary. It is temporarily located at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Charlotte until the permanent Seminary can be built near the Belmont Abbey campus. Until then, they will be attending Belmont Abbey College and living their community life at St. Ann’s in Charlotte. With an approximate 30 minute drive each way, they will need to travel many miles back and forth to their classes. Fr. Kauth, newly appointed rector, has asked if we could pitch in and alleviate some of the gas costs in the form of gift cards in any amount you can spare. Feel free to buy whatever gas cards are available. Also, if you would rather write a check or donate money, they will use that to purchase groceries or other necessities. Please write the check to the “Diocese of Charlotte” and write on the memo line “for St. Joseph’s Seminary”. Place your gift in an envelope labeled for the St. Joseph’s Seminarians during the offertory collection and place them in the basket. God bless you for your generostiy and our seminarians!

Jesús, ¿Radical o intolerante?

religiosa, lo hemos hecho. El mismo Eliseo le hizo a Elías una idéntica petición cuando éste lo llamó a sucederlo en el ministerio profético. Y Elías se lo permitió (I Re, 19, 91-21).

Lucas 9, 51-62. Tiempo Ordinario. Cristo conoce muy bien el corazón de los hombres y sabe lo que puede pedirnos. Sin embargo, las palabras de nuestro Señor vuelven a ser duras y radicales: "El que echa la mano en el arado y sigue mirando atrás, no Oración introductoria vale para el Reino de Dios". Y también éste queda descartado. Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, no hay camino más corto y más seguro para alcanzar la felicidad que el conocer, venerar, agradecer y alabar ¿No es Jesús un Mesías bastante radical e intolerante? Sin embargo, tu sacratísimo corazón. Dame un amor ardiente y personal a tu divino en este último caso, el Señor no está negando a nadie que "se despida" corazón, y nunca dejes que anteponga mi egoísmo o mis apegos físicamente de los suyos. De lo que habla es de la actitud interior. Éste terrenales a tu santa voluntad. todavía estaba demasiado apegado a su familia y los afectos naturales Petición Jesús, conviérteme en un apóstol apasionado de tu Reino. Reflexión Creo que nunca se había hablado tanto de "tolerancia" como en nuestros días. Aunque, si hemos de ser sinceros, aún hoy se cometen bastantes atropellos en muchos rincones del planeta a causa de la intolerancia religiosa, étnica, cultural, económica o social. Pero, no voy a entrar en este tema. Lo que se me ha hecho curioso es que en el Evangelio de este domingo, Jesús se nos presenta, extrañamente, casi como un "intolerante"... Lucas nos narra el caso de tres jóvenes que pudieron ser discípulos de Jesús, y que quedaron en vocaciones frustradas por la respuesta dada por el Señor. Quien no lo conoce, podría tildarlo de duro, tajante, e incluso de intolerante. Ciertamente, desconcertante. Mientras Jesús iba de camino, le salió al encuentro uno, que le dijo: "Maestro, te seguiré a dondequiera que vayas". Parecía estar bien dispuesto y preparado para seguir a Jesús. Y, sin embargo, nos da la impresión de que nuestro Señor lo desanima: "Las zorras tienen madrigueras y los pájaros nidos –le responde- pero el Hijo del hombre no tiene donde reclinar la cabeza". Era como decirle que se lo pensara muy bien, que no era fácil su seguimiento, que habría muchas dificultades y renuncias, y que no cualquiera podía ir por ese camino. Pero, ¿no hubiese sido mejor que lo entusiasmara y le ofreciera una palabra de aliento? Seguramente, al oír una respuesta tal, aquel muchacho se habrá echado para atrás. Enseguida se encuentra con otro, y lo invita Él personalmente: "Sígueme". Es aquí Jesús quien toma la iniciativa. El joven le pide un poco de prórroga: "Déjame primero ir a enterrar a mi padre". Jesús no condena los funerales. Obviamente, no es que el padre de este muchacho acabara de morir y tuviera que celebrarse un sepelio. No. Estas palabras significan otra cosa muy diversa: éste quería permanecer entre sus seres queridos hasta que sus padres murieran y entonces, después de sepultarlos, podría ser su discípulo.

Son esas personas que jamás se deciden a romper con sus comodidades, sus afectos, sus seguridades, ni son capaces de renunciar a la compañía física de sus seres queridos. Y así frustran una vocación hermosa al seguimiento de Jesús. El Señor no es intolerante, pero sí es exigente. Él conoce muy bien el corazón de los hombres y sabe lo que puede pedirnos. Si muchos reyes y generales, a lo largo de la historia, han pedido a sus súbditos o a sus soldados incluso el sacrificio supremo de la propia vida –y tantísimos lo han dado por su rey y por la patria- Jesucristo, el Rey de reyes, también puede pedirlo. Él quiere generosidad, decisión, totalidad en el amor. Las entregas a medias no sirven para nada. Además, el Señor advierte claramente a los que llama y les hace conocer las exigencias de su seguimiento. Quienes quieran alistarse en sus filas, deben ser conscientes de la dificultad de la empresa y de la gravedad de los compromisos que asumen con su decisión. Pero, aunque sabe que su seguimiento es costoso, el Señor no engaña a nadie porque quiere entregas libres, conscientes y hechas por amor. No quiere mercenarios, cobardes ni traidores. Cristo exige una opción radical por Él y por su Reino, pues "si alguno quiere seguirlo y no toma su cruz, no es digno de Él" (Lc 9,23). Sus discípulos deben estar dispuestos a entrar por la vía estrecha del Evangelio (Mt 7, 13-14), a perder la vida por Él para salvarla (Lc 9,24), y a caer en tierra y morir para llevar mucho fruto (Jn 12,24). Cristo exige radicalidad, sí, pero nos promete una recompensa eterna y un premio sin comparación: “cien veces más en esta vida y la vida eterna” (Mt 19,29). Francisco Pizarro, de camino al Perú, se vio ante un peligro inminente, y su tripulación se rebeló y exigió la vuelta. Pero el general se puso en medio de sus hombres, trazó una línea en tierra y les pidió una opción tajante: o seguir con él hasta la victoria, o echar marcha atrás como cobardes. Velas encendidas Cristo, es la luz verdadera del mundo y de nuestras vida. Esa es la luz inagotable que nos da el calor de su gracia divina. ¿Cuál es el simbolismo de la luz en la liturgia? En la Biblia es a Dios a quien radicalmente se aplica el lenguaje relativo a la luz. Dios "habita en una luz inaccesible" (1 Tim 6,16), "Dios es Luz, en El no hay tiniebla alguna" (1 Jn. 1,5). O, como dice inspiradamente el Salmista, "Dios mío, qué grande eres, vestido de esplendor y majestad, arropado de luz como de un manto" (Salmo 104,2). ¿Cómo expresar lo que es Dios—verdad, vida, amor—si no es recurriendo a este simbolismo tan profundo y sencillo a la vez, sutil y expresivo, de la luz? No es nada extraño que las Plegarias Eucarísticas, como la 4a. del Misal, alaben a Dios afirmando de Él que es "Luz sobre toda luz" y que creó todas las cosas "para alegrar su multitud con la claridad de tu gloria". Pero cuando hablamos de la luz en liturgia, o cuando la hacemos entrar en el juego de los símbolos, es a Cristo sobre todo a quien nos referimos. Es una de las imágenes preferidas en el Evangelio: "la Palabra era la Luz verdadera que ilumina a todo hombre" (Jn. 1,9): pero el mundo no le recibió y prefirió la tiniebla; "yo soy la Luz del mundo: el que me siga no caminará en la oscuridad, sino que tendrá la luz de la vida" (Jn. 8,12): palabras que proclamó Jesús precisamente en la fiesta de las Tiendas, la fiesta de las luces en el Templo

El próximo fin de semana nuestra parróquia se complace en dar la bienvenida a ua de las Hermanas Misioneras de San Francisco quien hará una apelaci6n en todas las misas. Las hermanas asisten a los pobres, con misiones extranjeras en México y misiones domesticas en los Montes Apalaches. En áreas remotas de México, ellas trabajan para edificar comunidades de fe. Y en Cuernavaca trabajan para dar a los niños y niñas que viven en extrema pobreza la oportunidad de obtener una educaci6n así como también alimentos y medicina. Los ministerios en los Montes Apalaches incluyen la evangelizaci6n y el cuidado pastoral, la alfabetizaci6n de adultos, los servicios de emergencia como falta de comida, ropa y albergue. Tendremos una segunda colecta especial en todas las misas y les pedimos a todos los feligreses que ayuden a hacer una diferencia en las vidas de los pobres con su generosa ayuda financiera.

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Baptisms are held at 2 pm on Saturdays. Baptism is the most important moment of our life. Infants should be baptized in the first few weeks. Parents AND godparents must attend the preparation class (held every 2nd Saturday) preferably before the child is born. Parents need to be registered in the parish, pledge to raise the child as a practicing Catholic, and must also be practicing the faith by attending Holy Mass every Sunday. Godparents are considered Catholic role models. Therefore, they must have received all sacraments, including Confirmation, and must be attending Holy Mass every Sunday. If they are married, they must have received the sacrament of Holy Matrimony in the Catholic Church. Please come to the parish office to register for the class and bring a copy of the child’s birth certificate when it becomes available.

SACRAMENT OF HOLY MATRIMONY Couples should make an appointment with the priest at the time of engagement, and at least six months before any proposed wedding date to begin preparations. The couple should be registered, active members of our parish, which means that all Catholic parties are attending Holy Mass every Sunday, contributing to the financial needs of the parish, and are engaged in the spiritual and social life of our parish family. All Weddings are celebrated inside the Church on Saturday at 10 AM or 12 PM.
