2. –AR and –ER stem-changing verbs do NOT have a stem-change in the preterite!! YEA!!! The “e” remains an “e” and the “o” remains an “o”. 3. –CAR verbs will end in –qué in the 1st person singular (yo) of the preterite. This is for easier pronunciation. 4. –GAR verbs will end in –gué in the 1st person singular (yo) of the preterite. This is for easier pronunciation. 5. –ZAR verbs will end in –cé in the 1st person singular (yo) of the preterite. This is for easier pronunciation. 6. The preterite is used to express completed past action. The action has a definite beginning and a definite end. 7. Look for clues. Look for adverbial expressions that imply the preterite - completed past action, action with a definite beginning AND a definite end:
ayer – yesterday;ayer por la mañana – yesteday morning;el año pasado – last year;el sábado pasado – last Saturday;
hace una hora – an hour ago;la última vez – the last time;la primera vez – the first time;anoche – last night
