NEWSLET TER Issue 25 - 24th March 2023

From the Executive Headteacher... Maths morning on Tuesday was great fun and a wonderful opportunity for parents and carers to visit classrooms, find out more about everyday maths lessons and join in with a range of brain teasing maths challenges. At Hillyfield, we work really hard on our maths speed and accuracy. Our younger children learn their number bonds - this means we learn the addition facts by heart (in other words, we don’t need to work them out by adding, we just know them). And our older children (Years 3 to 6) work just as hard to learn their times table multiplication facts (again, we learn these by heart so we just know the facts and don’t have to waste time working them out). Numbots, TT Rockstars and the very important 144 Challenge help us to learn and to track our progress. Our scores provide us with personalised feedback so we can celebrate our progress and success, and pinpoint what we need to work on next. Thank you to everyone who attended and once again, if you competed against your child in a 144 times table challenge and came out second best, don’t worry, they are very quick. Don’t give up! As always, if you’d like to find out more about our week at school and see what’s been happening, please take a look at our busy Twitter feed. Thank you for taking the time to read our newsletter. Enjoy the weekend. David Worrall

News from Nursery

Hillyfield nurseries have been learning all about Minibeasts - what they are called, if they fly or walk and how many legs they have, Juno counted “1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, my spider has 8 legs”. We have made pictures, went for a minibeast hunt in the garden and to practice our fine motor skills, we have been threading to make worms and legs on spiders. The children have worked really hard and their spiders were so amazing that we made a giant web to hang them all on. We learnt that the most important reason spiders spin webs is to trap insects for food.

Arts Spring Exhibition

At Hillyfield Primary Academy, we value the importance of creative arts, Enabling children to explore their ideas by experimenting and creating their own works of art using a range of materials and skills. The arts embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. At Hillyfield we provide an arts curriculum that engages and inspires our pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to invent their own works of art. On Tuesday 21st March at the Park Site and Thursday 23rd March on the Hill Site, we celebrated children’s creations in our fantastic Spring Exhibition. Many families and members of staff turned up to enjoy the work of Hillyfield children created during the Spring term. At Hillyfield, we are very proud of children’s achievements and excellence. Thank you for supporting and promoting the arts at Hillyfield!

Brilliance in Every Child Excellence Every Day

Betty’s Blog Hello everybody! It has been another fur-bulous week at Hillyfield. Some children from Year 2 went out for a trip to the theatre. I haven’t been to the theatre before but they were very excited when they were talking about it so it must be a fun place to go. Fleming class and Hawking class went on an adventure to the Natural history museum. When they got back to school they were talking about volcanoes and earthquakes. On Thursday it was movie night for Reception at the Park site. I walked past their door and watched them all looking super snuggly whilst enjoying a film on a big screen. I’ve continued to hear lovely rhymes from the children in Nursery. I had one special visit from three children who added my name into a Hello rhyme. It made me feel very im-paw-tant. There has been lots of music practice happening around the school this week as the children are doing a special assembly next week to show off what they have been learning. I watched Year 3 practising their recorders. Every child had one and they were all playing at once so it was a little loud for me. I think I might listen to the concert from my snuggly bed next week. At the Hill site this week I enjoyed cuddles with some monitors. Just like me, they have special jobs to do around the school. I think they enjoy helping just as much as I do. They certainly helped me with those lovely ear scratches. There is only one more week left until the Easter holidays and I’m paws-itive it will be another week full of fun adventures. See you all next week
