MERCY MOMENTS Among the recommended actions during the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy is a pilgrimage to a “Holy Door.” Making that pilgrimage is one of the conditions for obtaining a plenary indulgence, as we learned in last week’s Mercy Moment. But just what is a Holy Door, and what does it mean to go through one? The “Holy Door” has been a rich symbol in our Church for hundreds of years. In John’s Gospel, Jesus describes himself as a door: “I am the door; if anyone enters by me, he will be saved …” (John 10:9), making it very clear that no one may come to the Father except through Him since He is the Savior sent by the Father. A Holy Door, therefore, represents Christ. To walk through a Holy Door is a rich and demonstrative symbol of our commitment to conversion of life in Christ, who welcomes us with open arms as His mercy is greater than any sin, no matter how entrenched within our lives. The reason Pope Francis established the Holy Door indulgence for the Year of Mercy was to make sure the door was understood as “… Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons and instills hope.” (Misericordiae Vultus, 3.) Jesus is the door! Please plan to make a Holy Door pilgrimage. For convenience, three Holy Doors have been established by Bishop Stephen Blaire in the Diocese of Stockton. They are located at the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Stockton, St. Stanislaus in Modesto and St. Patrick’s in Sonora. Mercy Challenge for the week: Be generous enough to allow others to help you; people need to feel needed.
