Principal’s Notes/Mensaje Del Principal Hello Thunderbolts and Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing winter break. O.K., time to exercise all those new year’s resolutions: finish and hand in homework on time, read for at least an hour a day , do my best in school and work hard…….right, all you young `Bolts out there? We closed out 2009 in great fashion with concerts courtesy of our 7th & 8th grade band, strings, 8th grade guitar and a joint effort by our 8th grade and DHS choruses. Our students worked hard on their performances and it certainly showed. Next up is 7th grade chorus, our annual Music Show and our Spring Musical, “High School Musical”. The end of the first semester and the associated mid-term exams are upon us at the end of January. It is imperative that all 8th graders and students taking high school credit courses STUDY DILIGENTLY for their mid-terms as they constitute a significant portion of their semester grade and there will be no mid-term re-takes or re-do’s due to the county grading timeline. It has come to our attention that an increasing number of students are bringing so- called “energy drinks” to school. There are several hundred brands of these drinks on the market but what they seem to have in common is that they are loaded with caffeine and sugar. While there is no school rule or policy against this, many experts are worried about the effects these beverages may have on adolescents given the dearth of research on them. Hope to see a lot of you there. ! Hola “Thunderbolts” y feliz año nuevo! Espero que todos hayan tenido un receso de invierno relajante y entretenido. O.K., es tiempo para ejercitar todas las resoluciones para en Nuevo año: terminar las tareas a tiempo, leer una hora todos los días, dar lo mejor de mí en la escuela y trabajar arduamente…….cierto, ¿jóvenes “Bolts” que se encuentran ahí? El 2009 cerramos de gala con los conciertos de banda y cuerda, cortesía de nuestros estudiantes de 7mo & 8vo grado. También los estudiantes de guitarra de 8vo, se unieron al coro de DHS. Nuestros estudiantes trabajaron arduamente para su presentación y así lo demostraron. Nuestra próxima presentación será el coro de 7mo grado, el programa anual de Música y el músical de Primavera, “High School Musical”. La culminación del primer semestre será luego de los exámenes de medio año al final del mes de Enero. Es inminente que los estudiantes de 8vo que estén tomando una clase con créditos de HS ESTUDIEN DE MANERA DILIGENTE para sus exámenes de medio año. La nota obtenida en este examen constituye una porción importante de la nota semestral del estudiante, y es importante saber que este examen no se puede retomar debido al calendario del condado. Ha llegado a nuestra atención que se ha incrementado el número de estudiantes, que traen a la escuela las ya conocidas “bebidas energéticas”. Existe una cantidad extensa de diferentes marcas de estas bebidas en el mercado, pero todas tienen algo en común…. Y el común denominador es que todas tienen una cantidad grande de azúcar y cafeína. Aunque no existe ninguna regla o política que prohíba estas bebidas energéticas en las escuelas, es importante enfatizar que según las investigaciones realizadas los expertos están preocupados por los efectos que estas bebidas están causado en nuestros adolecentes. These choral students were chosen this past November, through a competitive county-wide audition. They make SRMS proud! Thank you to all the families who came out to the 5 Annual SRMS Turkey Trot! Congratulations to the first place winners: Micah Coffman (8th), Jacob Drake (7th), and Bryce Hartzel (6th). The second place winners: Olivia Bonnette (8th), Paige Southwick (7th), and Bailey Hartzel (6th). The third place winners: David Rieth(8th), Catherine Salamone(7th), and Omar Saracevic(6th). Thank you for the canned food donations that were contributed to LINK. A special SRMS thank you to Bryce Hartzel-who donated his prize turkey to LINK and to our PTO volunteers Nicole Bates, Lisa Coffman, and Madeleine Harrison.

On December 14th, eleven SRMS Students had the opportunity to perform with over 300 Tuba and Euphonium players on the Millennium Stage at The Kennedy Center for the 2009 Merry TubaChristmas event. PTO OUTLOOK Your SRMS Parent Teacher Organization at work……. Thank you to everyone who participated in the Easy As Pie Sale and our SRMS @ Baja Fresh night fundraiser. In addition, the teachers received a delicious Baja Fresh lunch courtesy of your donations. Also--Many Thanks to Wendy Newman and the other parent volunteers who helped with the sale of Holiday Grams for the students and staff. What's up next? Our next PTO meeting is Thursday, January 21st at 6:30pm in the school library. 8th Grade Beach Blast plans are underway! Loudoun Education Alliance of Parents (LEAP): Meets monthly to discuss topics of interest to parents. The topic for the January 13th meeting is "How to Close the SOL Achievement Gap". LATIN STUDENTS COMPETE Imagine hundreds of middle school and high school students in one place getting excited about Latin. On November 22, 2009, Ms. Weiskopf and some of her Latin students did just that at the Virginia Junior Classical League’s annual convention in Richmond. The Virginia Junior Classical League is an organization of middle and high school students that encourages “an interest in and an appreciation of the language, literature, and culture of ancient Greece and Rome and to impart an understanding of the debt of our own culture to that of Classical antiquity.” Congratulations to Randy Baloy, Erin Chia, Rowan Dempsey, and Olivia Sorto who placed in several of the events at the convention. They make Seneca Ridge proud!

Imagínense cientos de estudiantes de escuela Intermedia y Superior demostrando júbilo y satisfacción por el Latín. El 22 De Noviembre de 2009, la Sra. Weiskopf y algunos de sus estudiantes de la clase de latín demostraron júbilo en la convención anual de “Virginia Junior Classical League” en Richmond. Esta liga es una organización para estudiantes de escuela Intermedia y Superior, que demuestran un interés y apreciación al lenguaje del Latín y a su vez a la literatura y cultura antigua de Grecia y Roma. Imparte también un entendimiento en la deuda de nuestra propia cultura hacia esa antigüedad tradicional.
