Career Insights The doors open up and a bunch of freshers walks in every year. The far-stretched campus blooms once again with fresh faces and novice smiles. As freshers strolling around the campus, we barely possess a fair insight into the working culture in the corporate sector. We all come with dreams to see ourselves in some or the other corporate firms holding responsible positions. But barely we have a lucid picture of the basic functioning of the so-called corporate world. Corporates are very different than what we often imagine. They are an entire set of new happenings and once and only once we are an integral part of it, we will be able to figure out the reality. Usually, in our everyday college life, we try figuring out the number of subjects, the difficult ones, and the simpler ones. But corporates are all about figuring out and sustaining certain predefined organizational goals. At the very first moment when we step into the realm of the corporate world, the first lesson that we need to learn is to proactively take up certain responsibilities that we are expected to work upon. For this, the essential prerequisites are self-motivation and self-discipline. Catering to the onus of the organizational goals is essentially required from an individual. Colleges and universities instill in our academic excellence and the organization will look for professional excellence. Now comes the question, how can academic excellence be converted into professional excellence? There are basically two ways to achieve this goal. First of all, every subject that we learn as a part of our curriculum necessarily possesses a professional edge to it. We need to explore and find out the professional implementation of particular coursework. Once we start relating things, it will be very easy to get to the next level of professional excellence. This part of it begins as soon as we step into the professional world. We undergo certain corporate-level training and there we are supposed to implement the academic skills and expertise in creating a roadmap that leads to professional excellence. After getting through these two levels, an individual becomes a beginner in the field of professional excellence. On-the-job training happens continuously as we start working hands-on. This keeps imparting more and more know-how and expertise and we thrive each moment to be transformed into professional pioneers one day.

Operations deal with a process. People who are keen in handling an entire process of manufacturing, packaging, warehousing and finally marketing the product successfully to the retail outlets can perhaps plant stronger roots into the domain. Analytical skills are again the match winner in Operations.

Page-3

As far as MBA is concerned, we are certainly expected to be competing with the market leaders and at the same time leading our own organizations towards more sustainable and holistic growth. In SOM, NITW, we mostly have five important disciplines to pursue our master's degree in business administration. They are namely, Marketing, HR, Finance, IT, and operations. Now, coming to the individual disciplines, if an individual plans to pursue his career in marketing, he or she must ensure that inherently he or she possesses the skills to communicate convincingly and has the necessary skills to convert products lying in inventories to salable commodities that can earn revenue. Marketing is value not just sales.

If an individual plans for HR, he or she must be able to take important decisions on behalf of the organization and learn to separate the sheep from the goats. Communication skill is another very essential attribute of an HR professional.

For finance, an analytical mindset is a prerequisite. An individual opting for finance must be good at problem-solving and must possess a sound mindset in calculations.

An individual who chooses or plans to choose IT as his/her major must feel attached to the software and the use of different software technologies and architectures in achieving organizational goals of sales maximization and profit maximization. Again, an analytical and logical mindset is a requisite.

To summarise, the journey from campus to the corporate is arduous and at the same time adventurous. Academic excellence can be transformed into professional excellence if we embrace change and keep growing and learning even under pressure conditions and at the same time try to relate academics in terms of professional implementation.

Activities s in the Department Teacher’s Day

Abhiyan Club According to BB King, "the lovely thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you." The majority of students will look for the best platform to explore, learn, experience, and grow. Abhiyan is the management departmental club where you can triumph. This club features group discussions, extempore, guest lectures, topic awareness

brainstorming activities, personality development activities, and much more. This is one of the best clubs where we can be our best and sparkle even brighter. Due to the pandemic, this club's sessions have been held online for the past few years. However, we successfully launched the club this year, and we even recruited active members to help run and arrange events. We all want to do group activities regularly in the future, and our active sessions will begin in a few days. This platform is ideal for showcasing our skills and honing them further. We're all very pleased to be a part of the upcoming events!

We finally got to meet the professors and celebrate Teacher's Day in person after two long years. This was an exciting and unforgettable experience for both first-year and second-year students. All of the teachers have provided us with invaluable assistance, and we are all pleased to be a part of this department. We had a spectacular gathering with all of our department's students and faculty. The meeting began with a traditional song and was followed by faculty advice and a dance performance. We had a great time together and took pictures with the various staff members. Each and every faculty had provided us with invaluable assistance. It was a spectacular gathering wherein all our esteemed faculty members and students equally participated and enjoyed. Finally, we completed our teacher's day meeting by cutting the cake and taking a group photo with all of the department members. The professors recognized our admiration and respect for them and welcomed us heartily. Finally, we wrapped the meeting with refreshments!

Activities in the Department Onam 2022 Onam, an annual cultural festival of the Indian state of Kerala is a famous festival of Keralites. Onam commemorates King Mahabali and Vamana, mythical kings who ruled Kerala. Every year NIT Warangal has the tradition of celebrating the ritual with an infusion of all traditional aspects from cultural ethnic wear, traditional food (payasam), and art forms showcased on this auspicious occasion. Keralite students took active participation in the celebration involving their peers from all cultures. The ritual is completely handheld by Kerala students in unison for which they are known wherever they are grouped and they made their traditional dish ‘payasam’ and distributed it among all the students who attended the ceremony. This cross-cultural unison makes a good connection among all students and signifies the unity of our Indians.

Investment awareness program After a long time, a webinar has been conducted in a class room in which both students from MBA first year and second year actively participated. This is a national-level webinar on the investor awareness program conducted by the School of Management, National institute of technology in association with Ambition Learning Solutions held on 29th August 2022. The interaction also discussed the significance of mutual funds and the importance of early investments. By participating in this webinar the students have gained new knowledge on the latest market trends, and investment strategies and provided all useful information for all types of investors.

Activities in the Department Social Outreach campaign

As a part of our deeds through the social outreach club, we organized a cleaning campaign with the inspiration of the ‘Swachpakawa’ program. Through this activity, we moved in for 2 days of weekend (saturday and sunday) to clean our own classrooms and make them dust free. We successfully hand held the activity with active participation of the students from 1st and 2nd years of MBA. We are prone to organize more such activities through our social outreach club in the future that are meant to bring a change in the minds of students and convey a message to the society as well.

Some important insights from Quarter - 1 at the School of Management NITW: Management Theory and Practice Case study on the market position of the online shopping and services app TATA Neu. As it goes without saying that an MBA program brings out the true potential in people by keeping them occupied and always on their feet. By doing so, the curriculum at SoM ensures that the students may handle all kinds of pressure, know how to communicate, take proper decisions, etc. Students are made to step out of their comfort zones and face the real world as it is and thereafter, the industry. Recently, as part of their first fieldwork, the first-year students were assigned a task to take a survey, analyze, and report the market position of the online shopping and services platform TATA Neu. Students surveyed different groups of people according to their ages, professions, etc. As management is more about practice and less about theory, the students learned communication skills by connecting with people and understanding their thinking and way of doing things, especially why people prefer online shopping, why a specific brand over others, etc. By doing this activity students were able to understand the meaning and application of the management concepts they’re studying such as Planning, Organizing, Needs, etc. They also used their statistical skills to analyze the collected data and present it in a proper way. As managers in the contemporary world are required to be Jack of all Trades, the MBA program at SoM emphasizes the holistic development of engineers into future managers and leaders. Gone are the days when studies used to be a matter of sitting for hours and slogging bookish content with no practical knowledge as such. The modern and advanced curriculum at SoM leaves little scope for the industries to train the alumni of SoM separately and hence such an advanced curriculum is the need of the hour.

Positive Wellbeing

Task- Give time to family every day and take up physical activity for physical and mental wellbeing. In the hectic curriculum of the MBA and thereafter in the industry, people hardly have any time left for looking after their health, family, and friends. But these things are equally important as studies and work are. As a part of this assignment, students were told to speak to their parents every day, be it physically or on phone, and express gratitude to them, tell them about their day, and in turn, feel relaxed. Students were also told to take some physical activity for their physical and mental well-being. Some of them took up walking, some played a game, some meditation, etc. In such a busy schedule it's always important for a person to look into their health and these two tasks are aimed at the same. The faculties here are not only well versed in the field of management but also proficient in intellectual factors. So, such courses help keep the human in management students and realize their true selves.

Case study on the operation of Vegetable markets. The first semester students recently visited a nearby vegetable market in Kazipet. The field survey was assigned to them by Ramlal sir. The field survey was conducted so that students could properly understand the behavioral analysis, the supply, and demand, and the economic condition of the vegetable markets. The survey was useful as the students got acquainted with the functioning of the vegetable market. The students were assigned the task as a part of their continuous evaluation process. The basic idea was to let students understand an informal sector like the vegetable market and the way it works. The entire class was divided into many teams consisting of a maximum of three students. Their job was to visit a nearby market and conduct a field survey. Each group prepared a questionnaire and asked those set of questions to each of the vegetable sellers. Some groups also prepared questionnaires for the customers. Answers pertaining to each question in the questionnaire helped the students understand the behavioral analysis of the vegetable market. It was overall fun and a learning experience for all the groups. Such field surveys are often conducted by the students of SoM, NIT-W. Conducting such surveys help the students gain an enormous amount of practical knowledge that they are able to use in their future arenas.

- by Dipanjan Bhattacharjee (Class of 2022-24) Jordan was still stuck with oodles of office work. It was already 12. Midnight hours seemed peaceful to some but for Jordan, it was a bag full of agitation and anxiety. A senior manager in Houston Corp has quite honored the position. Jordan had worked really hard to

Management Studies, he had proved his skills a couple of times and is perhaps still doing the same each day. He was a commendable student with an excellent score card. His academic excellence was supposed to take him miles ahead in his career and offer him a fantastic life to cherish. But unfortunately, it wasn't the reality for Jordan. His work-life balance was nearly naught and his rhythm of life has transformed itself into highly complex cipher texts. Everyone must be wondering why a person with laudable academic records landed into a life with complexities and pandemonium. To understand it better, let us take a close look at Jordan's daily schedule (highlighting Monday's Schedule)

management and discussing over some important

11 AM: Meet some of the premium customers. 12 AM: Attend a meeting with the top-level aspects pertinent to organizational goals. 1 PM: Leave for lunch. 3 PM: Come back to his cabin and check emails. 4 PM: Attend a meeting with the client side delegates. 5.30 PM: Take up cases of employee conflicts and leverage various motivating concepts to resolve them. 7.30 PM: Go through pending files of financial audits to forward them to the higher management. 9.30 PM: Reply to all the pending emails from various vendors, client organizations, and other business emails. 11.30 PM: Take a glance at all the new applications for various openings forwarded by the HR Executive.

Jordan's schedule looks quite normal for an ordinary person who roughly takes a glance at it. But when analyzed critically, we can find certain problems in the time sequencing of various activities. Will Jordan ever be able to figure out where he's not right and what are the key areas he has to work upon? Well, to know that, we need to return to the present day and it's 12.30 AM now. Jordan is still stuck inside his 10 by 10 cabin. In front of him was a file with a name written on the top. It read Emily Johnson. He opened the file and the very first document inside was a CV. The CV details are given below; Name: Emily Johnson Email: [email protected] Mobile: XXXXXXXXXX Educational Qualification: Bachelor in Psychology Post Graduate in Cognitive Neuroscience MBA in Human Resource Management and Labour Relations. Work Experience: 5 Years as an HR professional in an MNC. Job Profile: Dealing with hiring, training, and motivating employees, understanding employee psychology and causes of employee resentments, resolving employee-level peer-to-peer conflicts. Skills: Organizing tasks in the correct order so as to reduce stressful transactions. This CV caught his attention and he started skimming through the other necessary details. He found this lady quite interesting to cultivate. He was just about to dial the number but regained senses soon. This is certainly not his job. His work is to approve the applicants and shortlist the most appealing profiles from the bunch of applications. Thankfully he realized it quite fast enough. Finally, by 1.30 AM, Jordan left for his home.

Page-10

Next Morning: Driving through the bustling streets, he sometimes took a glance at the street shops selling inexpensive street food. Those shops were quite huddled most of the time. At least at those moments when Jordan passed by. Finally, by 9.20 AM he was on his office premise; waiting for the elevator. He went straight to his cabin and almost started repeating the same set of activities. At around 11.30 AM, when he was discussing something important perhaps with a few premium clients, Mr. Bradley knocked on the door. His attention shook for a moment. Please come inside, yelled Jordan. Mr. Bradley entered with a blank face. Sir, said Bradley, I would like to remind you very humbly that I haven't received the applicant's shortlisted files yet after your kind approval. The recruitment process is being delayed and the concerned departments are getting hostile. They are complaining about lower manpower. It would be great if the final shortlisted files can be given to me by this evening. I will then proceed with the remaining recruitment process. Jordan didn't like this certainly because he felt it insulting, being directed by a subordinate in front of his very premium clients. His ego was fuming with ireful disgust.

I want to talk to you Mr. Bradley in private, said Jordan. Excuse me revered people; I will be right back, addressing his premium clients, Jordan left the room. They entered a conference room. Who do you think you are? Jordan's voice was harsh and seemed cacophonous. How dare you direct me to be a subordinate? Bradley's face turned pale. He wasn't ever expecting anything of this sort. Yet he understood, Jordan was a loser. His frustration was not because of Bradley but his unstructured and unorganized way of handling his job. Hello! I am talking to you and not these decorated walls and the AC. Please respond. Jordan's censure was rising higher. Bradley wanted to slap him black and blue but in this office, he was the HR Executive and the moronic person yelling in front was the Senior Manager. Arguing with him may invite a beautiful pink slip for Bradley. He apologized despite being at no fault. His timid apology somewhat satisfied his foaming cloud of ego. Tomorrow morning, make sure you collect the files from me, Jordan spoke in a firm yet calm voice. Bradley nodded in consent and left the room.

2 Days Later: The reception desk was crowded with many new faces. The applicants looked anxious as they all surrounded the reception desk and eventually occupied the seats in the lounge area. The third candidate was interviewed and now it was the turn of the fourth candidate. The reception lady announced a bit loudly and everyone looked up. Emily Johnson! Emily Johnson! Yes madam! I am here. A sweet and confident voice reverberated across the hall. A very charming young lady stepped out of the crowd and walked smartly to the reception desk. She exchanged a sweet smile with the reception lady and walked toward the interview room. Good Morning Miss Emily! A calm and relaxed voice greeted her. Good Morning Mr. Bradley, she greeted back reading his name from the nameplate placed on the desk right in front. An exchange of sweet smiles happened. Well, Miss Emily, tell me something about yourself. Sir, I shall tell you something that's not there in my curriculum vitae. I am a dynamic individual who can transform static inputs into kaleidoscopic outputs, be it human emotions or organizational activities. I am great at stimulating individuals who act bleak due to overstress handling in organizations as well as in real life. As an HR personnel, I certainly can contribute way better. That was sweet and smart, can you solve a situation for me Emily? Asked Bradley. Sure Sir. Please proceed, replied Emily. Bradley switched on a PowerPoint presentation and started explaining her the scenario.

Ashley is a manager in a reputed firm. She is very diligently carrying out her work. She is extremely task-oriented and prioritizes deadlines. Her employees are often on their toes in achieving targets. She is barely concerned about their individual problems. What shall be the long-term implications of this sort of managerial attitude according to you? Emily thought for a while and replied. Well, this managerial behavior can be well understood using the concept of the Managerial Grid. Here, Ashley is somewhere in the 2nd coordinate of the grid, i.e. (1,9). In this coordination, a manager is more focused on task accomplishments and ignores or minimally prioritizes employee welfare. In such organizations, employee satisfaction is minimum. Consequently, employees will not be motivated enough to continue their services over a very long period. Thus, long-term implications shall be a lack of suitable and expert workforce to carry out the tasks. There will be a surge in production costs due to the inefficiency of a comparatively new workforce each time. Bradley smiled and said, you are absolutely right young lady. I am glad you know things. Now I would like to present to you a real-time case. Are you ready to get through? Yes sir, certainly. Please share it with me, replied Emily. Bradley rose from his chair and said, this is not a theoretical case but a practical scenario. I am referring to the Senior Manager of this organization. His name is Mr. Jordan Davis. He is a talented and egoistic individual. He feels he does things right but basically, he unknowingly creates a mess out of his daily schedule. He lacks the ability to plan and organize things right. I have diplomatically transferred his secretary to a different location. Now the position is empty and I want you to take up the job. Manage this arrogant man and teach him management so that we can breathe peacefully. Emily's eyes brightened up. She has now got the challenge she has been waiting for a long time. She smiled blissfully and said, I wholeheartedly accept the challenge, Mr. Bradley. Just ensure my pockets are never light. They laughed on a lighter note and Emily left the room. It was a fresh new day and Emily was on the office premise even before her scheduled time. Mr. Jordan came in after a few minutes and the very first thing he asked Emily was "are the supervisors ready for the meet?" Emily politely spoke, Sir, I beg your pardon but today you will first go through the pending mails from various clients and other business acquaintances and reply to them with an agile mind. Lately, our business is suffering because of a few unsatisfied clients and unhappy business vendors owing to poor communication and certain ambiguities in the messages delivered. Sir, with due respect, I would like to inform you that even our employees are unsatisfied and are planning to switch companies. This isn't very healthy for the organization. I believe we should contemplate this and mend our shortcomings soon enough. Jordan's expressions portrayed exasperation but still, he kept on listening. Emily continued, sir, I know you are a great personality and you have abysmally large insight about different functionalities in management but sometimes a talented and skillful individual too needs some additional planning and organizing to have his or her schedule perfectly arranged and the best to go. I am aware dear sir that you are way better than me in every aspect and I am quite infinitesimal both in knowledge and expertise yet I felt that even if a person is highly ambitious and intelligent, sometimes he or she too needs some little assistance in sorting out things and getting everything properly arranged. I hope I am making sense sir. Jordan's attitude changed gradually. He started contemplating. Is what he had been doing not right? Is he responsible for the mess that was created? Too many unsatisfied clients and vendors to deal with, and too many broken business deals. Despite working more and working rigorously, the output is bleak. Jordan for a moment entered the introspection mode. He pondered over his activities for a couple of months. He had worked till late nights, he had been tough on employees, he gold plated some clients and ignored some. Somewhere, he has lost equilibrium and the ability to balance. Probably, Emily was right. He first needs to rearrange his schedule of daily activities and at the same time learn to prioritize tasks. After a few minutes of silence, he spoke, I think Emily, you are right. I had been following an incorrect methodology of management and thus despite my loyalty and dedication to the organization, I failed to meet the organizational goals. I failed to please my employees and clients. Now, it's time to change my demeanor. I really express my gratitude to Miss Emily to be an eye opener for me. Let's work together and achieve the best output out of our available resources, not only in terms of tasks but also by building cordial relationships with all our employees. Kindly call upon Mr. Bradley. I need to apologize for the unnecessary arrogance that I hurled at him. Let's be a family and work with each other and for each other with an objective to achieve the organizational goals. Emily smiled charmingly and went ahead to redesign the schedule for Jordan. Jordan too felt a gust of happiness for the first time in his job tenure.

Book Recomendation

We are likely to meet challenges at every stage of our lives. We must learn how to deal with them and use them to our advantage. Stoicism, an ancient Greek philosophical approach, is discussed in this book. They are perception, action, and willpower. The first section of the book is perception, which deals with how we look at things and how we perceive them. As the author stated in the book, "The perceiving eye can see more than what is there, the observing eye can see only what is there". The second section of the book is devoted to 'Action.' The author used Thomas Edison as an example of how constant he is in his work even though he failed after 6,000 tests to produce electric light. As the author quoted in the book, ‘We are A-Z thinkers, fretting about A, obsessing over Z, yet fretting all about B-Y’. The book's final theme revolves entirely around our 'Will.' This notion primarily emphasizes that we have little control over what occurs to us, but we can surely control how we respond to a given scenario. We'd like to share a few of our favorite quotes from the book-

“Focus on the moment, not the monsters that may or may not be up ahead” “Blessings and burdens are not mutually exclusive” “The obstacle in the path becomes the path. Never forget, within every obstacle is an opportunity to improve our condition”

The book "Think like a Monk" delineates different aspects which Jay Shetty experienced throughout his 3 years journey as a monk in India. The way Shetty expresses the wisdom gleaned from ancient writings and monks in a palatable and practical way stoles the heart of everyone. Some of the major learning’s which even makes everyone muse for minutes. Differentiate between a monkey and monk mindset. Adaption to particular workstation importance. Stress lowering possibility tips by pranayama and cardiovascular health guidance. To build your competence without regard for your character is narcissistic, and to build character without working on skills is devoid of impact, we require both to serve our purpose and souls. Shetty says it’s a must to realize what makes us attracted to someone, we have to understand it in four different types of trust. We can tell if they are compatible with us by looking at how their values and trust align with ours. some of the top-notch lines which attracted me are “Salt is so humble that when something goes wrong, it takes the blame, and when everything goes right, it doesn’t take credit.” “Schadenfreude doesn't last long. The more we define ourselves about the people around us the more lost we are.”

Our company's name is Outshade Digital Media, a web development company based out in Hyderabad. Outshade has its official inception in the year 2018 as a Private Limited organization. We predominantly work in the software segment offering web and mobile applications development, infrastructure, and cloud management services. How did you first get the idea of getting into entrepreneurship? It was not an idea but it all started with my will to do something of my own. It's been part of my intermediate working and tinkering with multiple ideas, starting with a lot of internships that I did way prior to my professional career. I have done over 8 to 12 internships when I was in the 1st and 2nd year of Engineering in the spectrum of companies ranging from those which were in the inception stage to companies at the corporate level (MNCs) in various roles from development to design and marketing. I've tried my hands on everything and concluded that I pretty much like to do everything. That's when I eventually drifted towards starting something on my own and that's how the company came into the picture

What are the factors that motivated you to start your own startup? To be honest, it was the self zeal to start something and the market has to be open to encouraging younger companies, especially in the most competitive services segment. We know there are many MNCs in the services segment in India, especially in IT we have big giants like Infosys and TCS which are hailing from India. Indeed, it was a very tricky market to get into the competition but we found a niche where we work with the government, we work with startups and that‘s how we entered the market. We have timed it well. In our inception stage, we helped companies that were similar to us in the inception stage in their respective domains and grew along with time in our journeys. I believe that it’s not the monetary compensation that we need to look into for our time, especially in those inception days but a lot of voluntary work paid off well for us in the initial days, especially in the days when I was a solo man company, we worked a lot for government organizations, government agencies specifically in the Telangana government. By the time I was out of my engineering, we had a couple of government bodies already as our clients which will be surely a credibility factor for us. Besides, due to support from the ecosystem players like T-Hub here in Telangana, a lot of companies popped out with its support and that’s when we had a huge scope of positioning ourselves in the market.
