My dear parishioners, Last week I wrote about how I first learned to pray the rosary. I would like to link that to the theme of this month of praying for the dead. One of the most important women in my life was my maternal grandmother, May Hanratty. As a child, one of my favorite activities was to visit my mother’s parents in Mount Vernon. I would never really want to leave my grandmother’s house. Her love for my brother and I was very deep and she was always thrilled to see us. At times, my mother would allow me to stay over with my grandparents and my grandmother would take me to work with her. She had the best job a grandparent could ever have: she was the manager of the toy department in the local shopping mall! Many of the happiest moments of my childhood took place in that house. My grandfather died during my senior of high school and my grandmother’s health continued to deteriorate. My parents had my grandmother move in with them in Maspeth. Every time I would come home to visit, her eyes would light up as I entered her room. Even though she could do less and less, she still loved to watch her Yankees and other programs. She would do crossword puzzles and other things like that to keep her busy. One year for Christmas, I wanted to do something special for her. I bought her a beautiful rosary, thinking that maybe she could use it. I was not sure she would even use it, but I thought it was worth a try. Almost every time I came to visit her after that, I would find the rosary either in her hand or close to her. I was glad to see her using it and asked what she was praying for. She told me she was praying for the souls of my father, my grandfather and my great-grandparents. She was also praying for the souls of other friends and relatives. I always saw my grandfather to be the one with strong faith, but I then realized that my grandmother also had strong faith. She died during my senior year at the college seminary. My mother asked me if I wanted the rosary beads, but I told her that I preferred that my grandmother be buried with them. It gave me great comfort to know that she was buried with the gift I gave her, but also she was buried with the chain that connected her to the place I hoped she would be going to: heaven. The rosary gave my grandmother great comfort in her last years. She lived the different mysteries, especially the Sorrowful ones towards the end. She was able to unite her sufferings to those of Jesus Christ. Along with the reception of Holy Communion, the rosary united her to the Lord. To think of her with those beads in her hand, places a smile on my face just like her outstretched arms that would embrace the little child who never stopped loving her. God bless,

Mis queridos feligreses, La semana pasada les escribí acerca de cómo aprendí por primera vez a rezar el rosario. Me gustaría unirlo al tema de este mes que es orando por los difuntos. Una de las mujeres más importantes en mi vida fue mi abuela materna, May Hanratty. Como niño, una de mis actividades favoritas era visitar a los padres de mi madre en Mount Vernon. En realidad yo nunca quería irme de casa de mi abuela. Su amor por mi hermano y por mi era muy grande y ella siempre estaba encantada de vernos. Algunas veces, mi madre me permitía quedarme con mis abuelos y mi abuela me llevaba a trabajar con ella. Ella tenía el mejor trabajo que una abuela podía tener: ¡ella era la gerente del departamento de juguetes en el centro comercial local!! Muchos de mis momentos más felices de mi niñez me sucedieron en esa casa. Mi abuelo falleció cuando yo estaba en mi último año de escuela superior y la salud de mi abuela continuó deteriorándose. Mis padres la trajeron a vivir con ellos a Maspeth. Cada vez que yo venía a visitar, sus ojos se iluminaban cuando yo entraba en su cuarto. Ella hacía menos y menos cosas, pero le gustaba ver a los Yankees y otros programas. Ella hacía crucigramas para mantenerse ocupada. Un año para la Navidad yo quería hacer algo especial por ella. Le compré un hermoso rosario, pensando que ella lo podía usar. Yo no estaba seguro si ella lo iba a usar pero valía la pena intentarlo. Casi todas las veces que la visité después de eso la encontraba con el rosario en su mano o muy cerca de ella. Me dio alegría ver que lo estaba usando y le pregunté por que estaba rezando. Ella me dijo que estaba rezando por las almas de mi padre, mi abuelo y mis bisabuelos. También oraba por las almas de otros amigos y familiares. Yo siempre vi a mi abuelo como el que tenía una fe fuerte pero entonces me di cuenta que mi abuela tenía también una fe fuerte. Ella falleció en mi último año de estudios en el seminario menor. Mi madre me preguntó si yo quería el rosario pero le dije que yo prefería que la enterraran con el. Me hizo sentir cómodo saber que ella fue enterrada con el regalo que yo le di pero también que fue enterrada con la cadena que la conectaba al lugar que ella esperaba ir: el cielo. El rosario le dio comodidad a mi abuela en sus últimos años. Ella vivió los diferentes misterios, especialmente los dolorosos al acercarse el final de sus días. Ella fue capaz de unir sus sufrimientos a los de Jesucristo. Junto con recibir la Santa Comunión, el rosario la unía al Señor. Pensar en ella con el rosario en su mano trae una sonrisa a mi cara, como también sus brazos abiertos para abrazar el pequeño niño que nunca dejó de amarla. Que Dios les bendiga,
