J

“Remain in my love.”

esus said this to his disciples at the Last Supper discourse in John’s Gospel, chapter 15—today’s liturgy. It sounds so simple that we may easily miss how absolutely important it is when we face a crisis in our life. We run around, seek sympathy, look for something or somebody to help take away our pain and uncertainty. We turn, of course, to prayer also, but it is the wrong kind of prayer. I know because I do it myself so regularly. A wise spiritual director is helping me see why doing what comes naturally when trying to “pray through a crisis” turns us back upon the crisis and lets us wallow in our own sufferings. Prayer must be completely focused on God and not upon our own wounded experience. This is hard to do, but absolutely essential. Let’s face it: much of our prayer is not about letting go and letting God, but about pleading harder and longer for God to solve my problem while leaving me where I am now, and not allowing God to take me where God is waiting for me. What he is waiting for me to do is to enter into and “Remain in my love,” the love he has for me.

Into God’s lap like a child

eal prayer is not unlike what we all did as children when our world was a mess and we were crying and unable to deal with things. We climbed into our mother’s lap and let her hold us. We drew so much strength from our mother’s presence that our wound became insignificant. Or maybe it wasn’t just your mother, but someone who really loves you, and we know it is okay to pour out our sorrow and confusion and pain to her or him. And doesn’t that turning ourselves over to someone else put our problem in a much bigger context, and get us to let go of what was killing us? Pity the poor men and women and children who have no one whose loving strength can embrace them and let them “Remain in my love.” When praying in a crisis we must refuse to think about ourselves at all. Like a child we must simply be content to sit and be held by the

mother—who is God. What we so often do, under the guise of prayer (“I’m praying very hard about this”), is to wallow further in hurt and self pity. What we need to do is go to God, think of the Lord, accept that we are his children, be unafraid to go and crawl into his arms and feel his warmth and his love. Get out of ourselves and experience God, slowly and gently, widening again the scope of our heart and mind. The measure of the world and of God is not confined to my present sorrow and worry. “Why don’t you come and remain in my love, and we’ll see what is really happening here,” says the Lord Jesus. Doesn’t it sound too simple to be true? Well, it isn’t!

Why is this so hard to do?

e all know the answer, but we don’t make the needed effort to go against our prevailing culture and environment. Our typical day, even for those who thought retirement would bring more leisure, sucks us through an unending series of demands, activities, and preoccupations. “When, in all of this,” asks Father Rolheiser, “did we take time to think, to be contemplative, to pray, to wonder, to appreciate, simply to enjoy, to be restful, to be grateful just for being alive, to be grateful for love, for health, for God? The day just sucked us through.” Solitude, and the awareness that comes with it, is so rare for most of us that there is simply no space for a sense of gratitude, appreciation, peacefulness, enjoyment and prayer. What is missing is the sense that ordinary life is precious, sacred and enough. This is why many people who lived ahead of us seemed more content with what they had. For them, ordinary life was precious, sacred and enough. If we don’t rediscover this simple truth, we will be constantly in some kind of crisis because we wrongly believe that only an extraordinary life can be enough. And if we believe Jesus, the only way to find the happiness our heart is made for is to “remain in my love.” This gift of love is what really makes an ordinary life precious, sacred, and enough.

Mensaje del Padre Pat “Permanezcan en mi amor.” Jesús les dijo esto a sus discípulos en la última cena, discurso en el evangelio de Juan capítulo 15 — en la liturgia de hoy. Suena muy simple que nosotros fácilmente podríamos perdernos absolutamente la importancia que es cuando enfrentamos una crisis en nuestra vida. Corremos alrededor, miramos simpatía, buscamos algo o a alguien para que nos ayude a alejar nuestro dolor o incertidumbre. Por supuesto, también rezamos, pero es la clase equivocada de rezar. Lo se porque regularmente yo mismo lo hago. Un sabio director espiritual me esta ayudando a ver que es lo que naturalmente nos hace tratar de “orar en una crisis” nos regresa a la crisis y nos permite que nos revolquemos en nuestro propio sufrimiento. Orar debería estar completamente enfocado en Dios y no en nuestra propia experiencia de dolor. Es difícil hacerlo, pero absolutamente esencial. Encarémoslo: mucho de nuestras oraciones no es acerca de dejar ir o dejar a Dios, sino a suplicar más fuerte y anhelo que Dios resuelva mi problema mientras me deje donde estoy ahora, y no permitirle a Dios que me lleve donde él me está esperando. Lo que él me está pidiendo hacer es entrar y “Permanecer en mi amor,” el amor que tiene para mi. En el regazo de Dios como un niño Una verdadera oración no se parece a la que hacíamos cuando niños cuando nuestro mundo era un desorden y llorábamos indispuestos a tratar con cosas. Piedad a los hombre pobres y mujeres y niños que no tienen a nadie cuya fuerza amorosa pueda abrazarlos y permitirles “Permanecer en mi amor.” Cuando oramos en una crisis en absoluto negamos pensar en nosotros mismos. Como un niño simplemente nos contentamos con sentarnos y ser sostenidos por la madre— que es Dios. Lo que hacemos muy a menudo, bajo el pretexto de orar (“estoy orando muy fuerte en esto”),

es revolcar más la herida y la misma piedad. Lo que necesitamos hacer es ir a Dios, pensar en el Señor, aceptar que somos sus hijos, no tener miedo de ir y arrastrarse hasta sus brazos y sentir su calor y su amor. Bien, no lo es. ¿Por qué es tan difícil hacerlo? Todos sabemos la respuesta, pero no hacemos el esfuerzo necesario para ir en contra de nuestro actual ambiente y cultura. Nuestro típico día, aún esos que piensan retirarse podrían traer más calma, nos succionara con una serie interminable de demandas, actividades, y preocupaciones. “¿Cuando, será todo esto,” pregunto el Padre Rolheiser, “Tuvimos tiempo para pensar, para contemplar, para orar, para maravillarnos, para apreciar, simplemente para disfrutar, para descansar, estar agradecido por estar vivo, estar agradecido por amar, por la salud, por Dios? El día nos trago.” La soledad, y el conocimiento vienen con el, es muy raro para muchos de nosotros que simplemente no hay espacio para un sentido de gratitud, apreciación, tranquilidad, disfrutar y orar. Pero si creemos que Jesús, es el único camino para encontrar la felicidad nuestro corazón esta hecho para “permanecer en mi amor.” Este regalo de amor es lo que realmente hace una vida ordinaria preciosa, sagrada y suficiente.

Why was light blue chosen as the color of Mary? Actually, the older, classic and more representative color is dark blue, according to the Rev. Johann Roten, S.M, director of the Marian Library: “Mary's dark blue mantle, from about 500 A.D., is of Byzantine origin and is the color of an empress (or queen.).” Mary has traditionally been called “Queen of Heaven,” as the Mother of God. In medieval paintings of Mary the color blue used was derived from lapis lazuli, a stone imported from Afghanistan and of greater value than gold. Art patrons were expected to purchase any gold or lapis lazuli to be used in the painting. Hence, it was an expression of devotion and glorification to swath the Virgin in wide flowing gowns of blue (as well as a not-too-subtle expression of the patron's wealth). The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick

Is there anyone sick among you? He should ask for the priests of the church. They in turn are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. This prayer uttered in faith will reclaim the one who is ill and the Lord will restore him to health. (James 5:14-15)

Why should I be anointed? The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick continues the healing ministry of Jesus by helping those who are in need of spiritual, emotional or physical healing experience the presence of Christ. The sacrament grants the grace of comfort, peace and courage, to face sickness and resist being tempted by discouragement and despair. Is there a difference between being healed and being cured? Yes. A healing takes place on the spiritual level. A healing might include strength to face what lies ahead and the grace to accept God's will for our lives. A cure speaks of the physical aspects, and sometimes, through this sacrament, people are not only healed, they also are cured. Who should be anointed? Anyone who: Has a serious or chronic illness. Is facing surgery. Is suffering from the debilitating effects of old age. When should anointing take place? As soon as one becomes seriously ill. If surgery is elective or planned, before being admitted for the surgery. Before the sick person is unconscious, comatose or in the last stages of death. Whenever a new condition or surgery arises or the current condition significantly worsens. What takes place during the anointing? The priest lays hands on the one who is ill and prays over him or her. The priest will also anoint with oil, the ancient symbol for strength and healing. How can I arrange to be anointed? Anointing is available each weekday morning immediately following the 6:30 and 8:15 Mass. Arrange this by speaking with the priest before Mass. NO SOLO DE PAN VIVE EL HOMBRE Por Humberto Beltrán Dicen que había un hombre descreído que se jactaba de su condición de ateo. Un día vio a la Madre Teresa de Calcuta limpiar a un borracho, que tenia todo su cuerpo lleno de excremento, y este hombre mirando la ternura con que la Madre Teresa limpiaba a aquel hombre, le dijo: “¡Eso yo no lo haría ni por un millón de dólares!” Y ella inmediatamente respondió “¡Ni yo tampoco!” Esta respuesta inesperada para él fue un punto de reflexión. Y volvió a preguntarle: “¿Y porque lo hace entonces?” Ella dijo: “Únicamente por amor a Dios”. Y dicen que este fue el punto de partida para él volver a la fe y a la práctica religiosa. ¿Cuál es nuestro compromiso con la iglesia? Hace mucho tiempo conocí a un señor que tenía varias tiendas de mimbre, algunas veces yo le hacía trabajos de electricidad. Después cambie de trabajo y por un largo tiempo no supe de él. Un día lo encontré aquí en la iglesia y me contó que él asistía todos los domingos a misa, pero su trabajo no le permitía involucrarse en los asuntos de la iglesia, y a la salida de misa veía a mucha gente trabajando y muy entusiasmada, él pensó esta gente ha de ganar mucho dinero, finalmente un día se atrevió a preguntarle a una persona ¿oiga cuanto gana por hacer esto? La persona le contesto: ¡El reino de los cielos! Se sintió tan mal, e hizo lo que el joven en una de las lecturas que Jesús le dice ve y vende todo. Y se fue y vendió todos los negocios que tenía y consiguió uno que le diera más tiempo para involucrarse en la iglesia, ahora es uno de los mejores colaboradores siempre está en todas las actividades. No todo se compra con dinero. No todo se valora a base de dinero. Hay otros valores que valen mucho en la vida del ser humano. Hay algunos que se proponen metas económicas, y cuando las alcanzan, ven que eso no es todo, que estan vacíos y necesitan de algo más sólido, profundo y perdurable. ¿Cuál es nuestra responsabilidad como cristianos? Hay actividades en la vida que se hacen por dinero y las mismas se hacen por amor también. Por ejemplo los doctores, las enfermeras, los bomberos, el sacerdote, el trabajador social, la recepcionista. En seguida se distingue cuando hacen su trabajo solamente por un salario, por interés material, y de los que ejercen por amor, por vocación. Jesús explica a los fariseos que El guía por el camino de la virtud, que exige un estilo de vida superior, que equilibra a los desajustados, que cura a los enfermos, que resucita a los muertos, que evangeliza a los pobres, y otras cosas más, no como asalariado, sino por amor. Quien ejerce una actividad solo por interés material pronto muestra su impaciencia, su intolerancia, sus reservas, su desconfianza con las personas que trata. No establece una corriente de comprensión, de afinidad. Todo esto lo explica Jesús con la comparación del Buen Pastor. Dice que el pastor asalariado ve venir al lobo y huye, abandonado a sus ovejas, porque no le importan. Así describe con un lenguaje doméstico, con una figura que todos entienden, la mala condición del mercenario, del que se mueve solo por paga y no por amor. Comprendido esto, El asegura: “Yo soy El Buen Pastor”. El está dispuesto a dar su vida por sus ovejas. Y lo hizo. El Buen Pastor conoce a sus ovejas, y las ovejas lo conocen a El. Es que El es el dueño de las ovejas, y por lo tanto, las cuida, las defiende y las alimenta, poniéndolas en lugar seguro. Jesús es el pastor ideal. Reflexión La celebración de la eucaristía es ante todo la manifestación del amor de Jesús, el Buen Pastor, que nos alimenta con el Pan de Vida. Mayo Mes de la Virgen María ¿Porque el azul fue escogido como el color de María? Actualmente, el mas viejo, clásico y mas representativo es el color azul obscuro, de acuerdo con el Padre Johann Roten, S.M, director de la Librería Mariana. “El tapado azul obscuro de María, desde hace 500 A.D., es de origen Bizantino y es el color de una emperatriz (o reina).” María es tradicionalmente llamada “Reina de los Cielos”, como la madre de Dios. En pinturas medievales de María el color azul fue derivado de lapis lazuli, una piedra importada de Afganistán y tiene mas valor que el oro. Los patrones del arte esperaban comprar cualquier oro o lapis lazuli para ser usados en las pinturas. De ahí era una expresión de devoción y glorificación a la Virgen en diferentes formas de vestimenta en color azul. Esto dice, que María no tiene un color oficial, y el rojo también es empleado en su representación.

2009-10 High School Confirmation Confirmation 1 Registration A mandatory meeting will be held on Sunday, June 14 at 6:30 PM in Hegarty Hall in English and 7:30 PM in St. Joseph's Hall in Spanish. A parent/guardian and candidate for confirmation must attend the meeting. Parents/Guardians need to bring copies of their candidate’s baptismal certificate, first communion certificate and $50 deposit (total R]registration fees are $150) to the mandatory meeting. Candidate interviews will follow the meeting.
