Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time
November 3, 2013
Dear Parishioners, Perhaps all of us from time to time have felt that some of our difficulties seemed insurmountable—yes, even Pastors have those days! The following was sent to me. For those who feel that the “going” is rough this might be helpful. For those that it doesn’t apply to now, you might want to save it for future reference. Have a nice week!
SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP A parable is told of a farmer who owned an old mule. The mule fell into the farmer’s well. The farmer heard the mule “braying”-or- whatever mules do when they fall into wells. After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer sympathized with the mule, but decided that neither the mule nor the well was worth the trouble of saving. Instead, he called his neighbors together and told them what had happened…and enlisted them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery. Initially, the old mule was hysterical! But as the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling and the dirt hit his back …a thought struck him. It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back…HE SHOULD SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP! This he did, blow after blow. “Shake it off and step up…shake it off and step up…shake it off and step up,” he repeated to encourage himself. No matter how painful the blows, or how distressing the situation seemed, the old mule fought “panic” and just kept right on SHAKING IT OFF AND STEPPING UP! It wasn’t long before the old mule, battered and exhausted, STEPPED TRIUMPHANTLY OVER THE WALL OF THAT WELL! What seemed like it would bury him, actually blessed him...all because of the manner in which he handled his adversity. THAT’S LIFE! If we face our problems and respond to them positively, and refuse to give in to panic, bitterness, or self-pity…THE ADVERSITIES THAT COME ALONG TO BURY US USUALLY HAVE WITHIN THEM THE POTENTIAL TO BENEFIT AND BLESS US! Remember that FORGIVENESS, FAITH, PRAYER, PRAISE and HOPE…all are excellent ways to “SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP” out of the wells in which we find ourselves! Author Unknown

OUR PRAYERS FOR THE SICK… While here on earth Jesus had a special love for all who were ill and suffering. Our Gospels have numerous examples of how He cared for those who were lame and sick. So as Christians following in His footsteps, striving to do His work here on earth, we remember in prayer our brothers and sisters who are not in good health. Here in our parish every weekend the names of those who are seriously ill are remembered in the Prayer of the Faithful. (This list of names can also be found in our weekly bulletin.) Because we are such a large parish, this list of names has the potential of becoming extremely long. Therefore, we ask your understanding in this area. The names can be read aloud only for two or three weeks. If your loved one is suffering from a long term illness, such as cancer, stroke, or other ongoing serious illness, after three weeks, this person’s name will be placed on the Parish Sick List, which can be found on the table in the church vestibule. (Please know that while on the Parish Prayer List, if at any time, your loved one’s illness becomes more serious, his/her name can be placed once again on the verbal list.) Also, please note that the Parish Prayer List is remembered in prayer each weekend in the Prayer of the Faithful, along with all who have received prayer shawls. It also is remembered in prayer by the Nativity School children and our Prayer groups in the parish. If you have any questions concerning this procedure, please feel free to speak with anyone in the Church office.
Retirement Fund for Religious Help aging sisters, brothers and religious order priests. “Each year the need to provide for our elderly (members) becomes more pressing, and we are ever grateful for these providential funds,” writes a religious sister about the financial assistance received from the Retirement Fund for Religious… Your donation helps provide necessities such as prescription medication and nursing care. Please give to those who have given a lifetime. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

FAIR TRADE COFFEE & CHOCOLATE
WHAT WOULD JESUS DRINK? The following statement was issued by the International and Domestic Policy Committee of the USCCB in Nov. 2005. "The US Conference of Catholic Bishops supports fair trade programs through which disadvantaged artisans, farmers and farm workers receive fair compensation for the goods they produce. We encourage Catholic organizations and individuals to purchase fair trade products (e.g., through Catholic Relief Services' programs) whenever possible." Let your Catholic conscience rest easy. It is possible to drink what Jesus would drink by purchasing Fair Trade Coffee sold in Nativity's Gift Shop. www.crsfairtrade.org
AMS COLLECTION Next week our parish will take up the Collection for the Archdiocese of the Military Services (AMS). The guiding mission of the AMS is to provide the sacraments and the re-affirming word of Christ to the men and women serving in our Armed Services, patients in VA Medical Centers, civilians working for the federal government beyond U.S. borders, and the families of these populations. To provide this service they need your help—the AMS receives no federal funding.

MOZART’S REQUIEM IN D MINOR The Schiller Institute will present a performance of Mozart's Requiem in D minor and remarks of remembrance at St. Mark Catholic Church on November 22, 2013 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The intention of the concert is best summed up by Kennedy's own words delivered just three days before his death on the occasion of the centennial of Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg address, "From the past, man obtains the insights, wisdom and hope to face with confidence the uncertainties of the future". Nothing expresses the deeper meaning of those words better than Mozart's most beautiful final composition. The concert will be performed by the Schiller Institute Chorus along with an orchestra and soloists assembled for the occasion. The concert will begin at 8:00 p.m. and is open to the public free of charge. FATHERS OF THE SAINTS Enjoy a Morning of Recollection for Men in Honor of Christ the King on Sat., Nov. 23 (from 8:15am-12:30pm) at St. John the Beloved Church, 6420 Linway Terrace, McLean, VA 22101. MIRANDO POR ENCIMA DE LA HOJARASCA Domingo XXXI © Javier Leoz

¿ME AYUDARÁS, SEÑOR?
