THE SOLEMNITY OF THE THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST
"And when the leftover fragments were picked up, they filled twelve wicker baskets." Today's Gospel shows us that Jesus wants to do more than satisfy our needs. He wants to give us an experience of fullness and abundance. He not only miraculously fed the crowd of thousands; he also provided enough to make a mountain of leftovers. More than they needed, more than they ever expected. That's what Jesus gave. And it's what he continues to give us every time we receive the Eucharist. This too is a miraculous meal. Like the multiplication of "five loaves and two fish," Jesus turns something small--bread --bread and wine--into --into something abundant and overflowing: his body, blood, soul, and divinity. Through this sacrament we experience the gift of union with Jesus and the resulting graces that come from encountering him. Just like the crowds gathered that day in a deserted place, we come to Jesus with our emptiness --our --our needs, our weaknesses, our fears--and --and he fills us up until we too are "satisfied." The prayer after Communion on today's feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ reminds us that what we experience at Mass is a foretaste of that ultimate satisfaction that we will experience in heaven: "Grant, O Lord, we pray, that we may delight for all eternity in that share in your divine life, which is foreshadowed in the present age by our reception of your precious Body and Blood." Receiving the Lord in the Eucharist is a momentous miracle and an earthly glimpse into heaven. May today's celebration help remind us to be ever grateful for this most glorious gift.
WHAT ARE THE ORIGINS FOR THE FEAST OF THE THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST, OFTEN REFERRED TO AS CORPUS CHRISTI SUNDAY? SUNDAY? Answer: By the year 1000, the active participation of the laity at Mass was minimal. Most of the people did not receive Communion for a variety of reasons, especially the notion of unworthiness. A form of eucharistic spirituality that attempted to involve them developed, known as "ocular communion." It put forth the notion that eucharistic graces were received by merely looking at the host. Instead of physically partaking, one fervently looked at and adored the host. Elevating the bread and wine at consecration dates to this period. The practice of viewing the host outside of Mass developed into a devotion called Benediction, where the exposed host could be viewed and adored for a more extended period of time. By 1250, we have the development of Corpus Christi, a procession through the streets with the exposed host in a holder called a monstrance, enabling all to view and adore the Blessed Sacrament.

FATHER LANKEIT'S RECOMMENDED BOOK “Do No Harm: A Novel by Fiorella De Maria When a British emergency room doctor saves the life a woman who apparently attempted suicide, he is accused of committing a crime and stands trial. Not only is Dr. Matthew Kemble's medical practice at risk, but also his liberty. If he is found guilty of trespassing on a woman's right to die, he could go to jail. The novel exposes the dangers faced by conscientious doctors in Britain. Dr. Kemble's decision to treat a patient in defiance of her Living Will pits him against English Law, public opinion and his own profession. The legal and personal battles he faces raise many questions about the role of the physician in the modern world, contemporary beliefs about autonomy and human rights, and the increasingly bitter clash of values in twenty-first century Britain. Only $19.95.
