This Sunday’s reading focuses on the prophetic nature of Jesus. According to the prophecies of the Old Testament, and in light of the realization of the New Testament, the Messiah was to be – and Jesus was a priest, prophet and king.

La liturgia de este domingo se centra en el profetismo de Jesús. De acuerdo a las profecías del Antiguo Testamento y a la luz de la realización del nuevo, el Mesías había de ser – y Jesús mostró ser sacerdote, profeta y rey.

In today’s reading, with the announcement of the prophetic institution as permanent in Israel following the death of Moses, we see the distant signals of the Prophet (capitalized) who was to be the Messiah.

En la primera lectura de hoy, junto al anuncio de la institución profética como algo permanente en Israel tras la desaparición de Moisés vemos el señalamiento a distancia del Profeta (con mayúscula) que había de ser el Mesías.

It should be clear that the Prophet is not only (or even primarily), one who predicts the future, but is, more importantly, he who speaks on behalf of God. “I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their kinsmen, and will put my words into his mouth; he shall tell them all that I command him” (Deut 18:18). And so God did, with all the prophets, until the coming of the Messiah – the Prophet par excellence. The letter to the Hebrews reads: “In times past, God spoke in partial and various ways to our ancestors through the prophets; in these last days, he spoke to us through a son (Heb 1:1-2). Jesus is the Prophet of God. It is He who speaks on behalf of his Father and endorses the words and doctrine with miracles. All were amazed and asked one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority?” (Mk 1:27). “But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” – he then healed the paralytic (Mt 9:6). He proclaimed to be Light of the world and healed the man born blind (Jn 9). He claimed to be the resurrection and the life, and raised Lazarus in Bethany (John 11). All baptized Christians share in Christ’s prophetic office. So the priest proclaimed the day of our baptism, when our heads were anointed with Chrism, and he said that with Christ we were beginning to be priests, prophets and kings.

Conviene aclarar que Profeta no es sólo, ni principalmente, el que predice el porvenir, sino el que habla en nombre de Dios. “Suscitaré un profeta de entre sus hermanos… Pondré mis palabras en su boca, y les dirá lo que yo le mande (Dt. 18:18). Y así lo hizo Dios con todos los profetas hasta que llegó el Mesías, el Profeta por excelencia. Dice la carta a los Hebreos: “En distintas ocasiones y de muchas maneras habló Dios antiguamente a nuestros padres por los profetas. Ahora, en esta etapa final, nos ha hablado por su Hijo” (Heb 1, 1s). Jesús es el Profeta de Dios que habla en nombre de su Padre y avala con milagros las palabras, la doctrina. “Este enseñar con autoridad es nuevo” decía la gente (Mc 1, 27). Para probar que tenía poder de perdonar los pecados curó al paralítico en Cafarnaún (Mat 9, 6). Se proclamó luz al mundo, y curó al ciego de nacimiento (Jn 9). Dijo ser la resurrección y la vida, y resucitó a Lázaro en Betania (Jn 11). Todo cristiano bautizado participa de la función profética de Cristo. Así lo proclamó el sacerdote el día de nuestro bautismo, al ungirnos la cabeza con el Crisma, dijo que empezábamos a ser con Cristo, sacerdotes, profetas y reyes.

We Christians are prophets of Jesus; “Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.” (Lk 10:16).

Our authority as prophets of Jesus is to convey his message accurately, without removing or adding anything. By our deeds we must confirm the faith we profess. We must do what we say. There is a Roman proverb that says: Words can move, but examples will haul.

Nuestra autoridad como profetas de Jesús está en que trasmitamos su mensaje exactamente, sin quitar ni poner. Y con nuestras obras debemos corroborar la fe que profesamos, lo que decimos. Hay un refrán romano que dice: Las palabras mueven, los ejemplos arrastran.

May the Lord help us carry out our prophetic mission: announcing to the world the Gospel of Jesus and bearing witness to Him, through faith, hope and charity.

We need your help at the center with the following: *Counseling Pregnant & Parenting Women (training available) *Processing Donations (comfortable air-conditioned area) *Working in the store (four-hour shifts Tuesdays through Saturdays) My Choice Pregnancy Center's mission is to assist women experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. Gphomestay is a residential program

for international students to come to the U.S. and attend Cardinal Mooney High School. We are looking for host families to provide housing for these students for the 2015-16 school year. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn about another culture while providing an authentic American experience for a student. A monthly stipend is also paid to cover costs.
