July 6, 2014 PASTOR’S NOTES Father Damien J. Cook St. Maria Goretti Today is technically the 14th Sunday of Ordinary Time but July 6th is also the memorial of a child Saint, St. Maria Goretti. We have a relic of her up on the gradine of the high altar. St. Maria Goretti was born near Ancona, Italy. The daughter of a poor peasant family, Maria was well known to her neighbors for her cheerfulness and piety. When she was twelve she was a victim of assault. She preferred to die rather than to lose her virginity. She died in 1902, and her mother was present at her canonization in 1950, the first time a parent was present for a child’s canonization. She miraculously appeared to her murderer posthumously and forgave him. She is a tremendous example of purity, courage, and mercy. St. Maria Goretti, pray for us. From the Homily at the Canonization of Saint Maria Goretti by Pope Pius XII It is well known how this young girl had to face a bitter struggle with no way to defend herself. Without warning a vicious stranger burst upon her, bent on raping her and destroying her childlike purity. In that moment of crisis she could have spoken to her Redeemer in the words of that classic, The Imitation of Christ: “Though tested and plagued by a host of misfortunes, I have no fear so long as your grace is with me. It is my strength, stronger than any adversary; it helps me and gives me guidance.” With splendid courage she surrendered herself to God and his grace and so gave her life to protect her virginity. The life of this simple girl - I shall concern myself only with highlights - we can see as worthy of heaven. Even today people can look upon it with admiration and respect. Parents can learn from her story how to raise their God-given children in virtue, courage and holiness; they can learn to train them in the Catholic faith so that, when put to the test, God’s grace will support them and they will come through undefeated, unscathed and untarnished. From Maria’s story carefree children and young people with their zest for life can learn not to be led astray by attractive pleasures which are not only ephemeral and empty but also sinful. Instead they can fix their sight on achieving Christian moral perfection, however difficult and hazardous that course may prove. With determination and God's help all of

XIV Sunday of Ordinary Time us can attain that goal by persistent effort and prayer. Not all of us are expected to die a martyr’s death, but we are all called to the pursuit of Christian virtue. This demands strength of character though it may not match that of this innocent girl. Still, a constant, persistent and relentless effort is asked of us right up to the moment of our death. This may be conceived as a slow steady martyrdom which Christ urged upon us when he said: The kingdom of heaven is set upon and laid waste by violent forces. So let us all, with God’s grace, strive to reach the goal that the example of the virgin martyr, Saint Maria Goretti, sets before us. Through her prayers to the Redeemer may all of us, each in his own way, joyfully try to follow the inspiration example of Maria Goretti who now enjoys eternal happiness in heaven. Let’s Ignite the Faith Archbishop Lucas has formally announced the Omaha Archdiocese Ignite the Faith Capital Campaign, and I’m looking for some volunteers to help with this effort: men and women who are excited about evangelization, about St. Peter Parish; disciples who want to share their Faith or learn how to share their Faith. Part of this evangelical effort is a major fundraising effort that will address several urgent and upcoming needs in our archdiocese, including: x Taking care of retired priests; x Encouraging new vocations; x Strengthening our Catholic schools; and x Investing in faith formation programs. The fundraising component is essential but only part of what we hope to accomplish here in St. Peter’s. We hope to use this opportunity to “ignite the faith” and build community and friendship in the parish around Jesus. Specifically, we hope to create kinds of “spiritual neighborhoods” and to plan faith-sharing home visits to every household registered in the parish. Parishioners, who would attend a couple of meetings with me and the Archdiocese to learn simple ways to evangelize, pray and foster stewardship, would then visit with other parishioners in their homes about the Faith, how they’re doing, their relationship with Jesus, etc. The Legion of Mary does something similar in its neighborhood census drives but this is very different: Instead of going to strangers you would only be visiting other registered parishioners. It’s a great way to bridge the gaps in our commuter parish and make everyone feel loved and appreciated and part of our parish family. It could radically transform us all and make us all better disciples of Jesus and the Church. Please, will you help me? If you have faith in Jesus, are a loving person, and enjoy conversing with people, then you have all the qualifications you need. Santa María Goretti Hoy es técnicamente el 14o domingo del Tiempo Ordinario. Sin embargo, también es el memorial de la niña santa, santa María Goretti. Tenemos una reliquia de ella en una repisa del altar alto. Santa María Goretti nació cerca de Ancona, Italia. Hija de una pobre familia campesina, María era muy conocida por sus vecinos por su alegría y devoción. Cuando tenía doce años fue víctima de un as alto. Prefirió morir que perder su virginidad. Murió en 1902, y su madre estuvo presente en su canonización en 1950, la primera vez que un padre presenciara la canonización de un niño. En la vida de esta humilde doncella, tal cual la hemos resumido en breves trazos, podemos contemplar un espectáculo no sólo digno del cielo, sino digno también de que lo miren, llenos de admiración y veneración los hombres de nuestro tiempo. Aprendan los padres y madres de familia cuán importante es el que eduquen a los hijos que Dios les ha dado en la rectitud, la santidad y la fortaleza, en la obediencia a los preceptos de la religión católica, para que, cuando su virtud se halle en peligro, salgan de él victoriosos, íntegros y puros, con la ayuda de la gracia divina. Aprenda la alegre niñez, aprenda la animosa juventud a no abandonarse lamentablemente a los placeres efímeros y vanos, a no ceder ante la seducción del vicio, sino, por el contrario, a luchar con firmeza, por muy arduo y difícil que sea el camino que lleva a la perfección cristiana, perfección a la que todos podemos llegar tarde o temprano con nuestra fuerza de voluntad, ayudada por la gracia de Dios, esforzándonos, trabajando y orando. No todos estamos llamados a sufrir el martirio, pero sí estamos todos llamados a la consecución de la virtud cristiana. Pero esta virtud

XIV Domingo de Tiempo Ordinario requiere una fortaleza que, aunque no llegue a igualar el grado cumbre de esta angelical doncella, exige, no obstante, un largo, diligentísimo e ininterrumpido esfuerzo, que no terminará sino con nuestra vida. Por esto, semejante esfuerzo puede equipararse a un lento y continuado martirio, al que nos amonestan aquellas palabras de Jesucristo: El reino de los cielos se abre paso a viva fuerza, y los que pugnan por entrar lo arrebatan. Animémonos todos a esta lucha cotidiana, apoyados en la gracia del cielo; sírvanos de estímulo la santa virgen y mártir María Goretti; que ella, desde el trono celestial, donde goza de la felicidad eterna, nos alcance del Redentor divino, con sus oraciones, que todos, cada cual según sus peculiares condiciones, sigamos sus huellas ilustres con generosidad, con sincera voluntad y con auténtico esfuerzo. Vamos a Encender la Fe El Arzobispo Lucas ha formalmente anunciado la campaña capital de la Arquidiócesis de Omaha Enciende la Fe, y estoy en busca de algunos voluntarios para asistir con este esfuerzo: caballeros y damas quienes les entusiasma la evangelización, la parroquia de San Pedro; discípulos quienes les gustaría compartir su Fe o aprender como compartir su Fe. Parte de este esfuerzo de evangelización es un gran esfuerzo de recaudación de fondos la cual abordara varias necesidades próximas y urgentes en nuestra arquidiócesis, incluyendo: x El cuidado de sacerdotes jubilados; x Fomento de nuevas vocaciones; x Fortalecimiento de nuestras escuelas católicas; x y Inversión en programas de formación de fe. El componente de recaudación de fondos es esencial, sin embargo solo una parte de lo que esperamos cumplir aquí en San Pedro. Tenemos la esperanza de utilizar esta oportunidad para “encender la fe” y construir comunidad y amistad en la parroquia acerca de Jesús. Es una gran manera de enlazar huecos en nuestra parroquia y hacer a todos sentirse amados y apreciados y parte de nuestra familia parroquial. Radicalmente nos transformara y nos hará mejores discípulos de Jesús y de la Iglesia. ¿Me asistirán, por favor? Si tienen fe en Jesús, son personas amorosas, y disfrutan conversar con la gente, entonces tienen todos los requisitos que necesitan. Liturgical Ministers Have people told you that you have a good speaking voice and read aloud well? Are you confident in speaking in front of other people? Do you love the Sacred Scriptures? If you answered yes to these questions then God is probably calling you to consider becoming a Reader in the Catholic Church. Readers proclaim the word of God and read the petitions from the Universal Prayer during Masses. Can you drive? Do you have a heart for seniors or those who are homebound or ill? Do you enjoy meeting people? Do you have a special love for the Blessed Sacrament? If you answered yes to these questions then God might be calling you to consider becoming an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. At St. Peter EMHCs assist in bringing Holy Communion once a month after the 8 a.m. Sunday Mass to the homebound in our parish. It is a tremendous privilege to bear the Holy Eucharist and to unite the lonely and separate with the whole community of believers through Holy Communion. EMHCs are also sometimes called upon to assist in the distribution of Holy Communion during Masses. Suitable candidates for any ministry in the Catholic Church should have received all three of the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion), agree with all of the teachings of the Catholic Church, and be able to receive Holy Communion. Candidates can be single individuals who are not cohabitating with a boyfriend or girlfriend or a spouse who has received the sacrament of matrimony in the Catholic Church.

Cook, the candidate will attend one of three Archdiocesan classes in August and the mandation ceremony at St. Cecilia Cathedral on Thursday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. Further training will be given by Fr. XVIII XIV Sunday of Ordinary Time Sacramental Preparation and Devotions Baptism and Godparent Requirements Parents of children who are six years of age or younger and in need of Baptism must be registered, active parishioners of St. Peter for at least two months. Godparents take on serious obligations when they sponsor a person for Baptism and they should be virtuous and faithful Catholics. Godparents must be 16 years old or more, fully initiated, practicing Catholics; if married godparents must be married in the Church. Baptisms may be scheduled only after the parents and godparents have completed the requisite classes and the parish office receives a letter from the parish at which the godparents belong stating that the godparents are in good standing with the Catholic Church and are eligible to be sponsors. Parents and sponsors must attend a Baptismal class before the Baptism. Classes in English for parents and godparents usually are usually offered on the fourth Sundays of March, June, September and December from 3:00-5:00 p.m. in O’Brien Hall. Pre-registration is required - please contact the parish office. Baptisms in English are usually offered on the 2nd Sunday of every month at 2:30 p.m. and on the 4th Saturday of every month at 9:00 a.m. Catechism Sacramental Preparation for Children The catechism school year goes from September through May of each year. Registrations began in May for the next school year. Classes are held on Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon, or Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. If the child is Baptized, a Baptism certificate must be given to the parish office. Children should be registered and attend classes for at least two years before receiving sacraments. For more information please contact the Catechism Office 402-341-4560, ext. 113. Home School Sacramental Preparation Families who are preparing their children at home to receive a sacrament this year should contact the parish office at their earliest convenience and see the parish website parish requirements and important dates for First Reconciliation, First Communion or Confirmation. If your child will be receiving a sacrament this school year or the following year, please register during Catechism and Homeschool registration

Quinceañeras In order to celebrate a quinceañera at St. Peter’s the following requirements must be met: x The quinceañera and her family must be registered parishioners of St. Peter’s Parish for a minimum of six months. x The quinceañera must have received the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist) or be registered in classes at St. Peter preparing to celebrate these sacraments and must actively participate in the parish, particularly the Mass and youth ministry. x The quinceañera should present a copy of her Baptismal and Confirmation certificates before the celebration of the Quinceañera. x The quinceañera must have attended at least 4 preparation classes (held in February, May, August and Nov.) at St. Peter. After all of the above requirements are met, you may call the St. Peter’s parish secretary, Mary Ramm, at 402-341-4560 ext. 100 to schedule a date for the quinceañera in Spanish or English. Hall Rentals Parishioners registered in St. Peter Parish for at least three months may rent the parish halls for receptions and events. XIV Domingo de Tiempo Ordinario

Preparación Sacramental y Devociones Requisitos para Bautismo y Padrinos El Cursillo Pre-Bautismal para Padres y Padrinos es requerido para Bautismos. El cursillo es valido por tres años. Padres de niños que serán Bautizados deberán de registrarse, feligreses registrados y activos de la Parroquia de San Pedro por lo menos de dos meses. Los padrinos deberán de ser iniciados completamente, practicando el Catolicismo, asisten en Misa por lo menos de los domingos y días de guardar, y si están casados, deberán ser casados por la Iglesia Católica, y tienen 16 años o más. Los padrinos toman sobre sí unas obligaciones muy serias cuando apadrinan una persona para el bautismo y deben ser virtuosos y fieles católicos. Les queremos animar a seleccionar muy cuidadosamente los padrinos. Podrán fijar y pedir el día para los bautismos solamente después de que los papás y los padrinos hayan completado tres clases de requisito y después de que la oficina de la parroquia haya recibido de los padrinos una carta de la parroquia a donde pertenecen los padrinos, en la cual constatan que ellos están en el buen favor de la Iglesia Católica y que son aprobados para ser padrinos. Para padrinos casados, por favor llevar copia de la acta de Matrimonio por la Iglesia Católica. El cusillo Bautismal se ofrecen cada dos meses en tres domingos. Después de haber cumplido con todos estos requisitos, debe llamar a la secretaria parroquial, Mary Ramm, al 402-341-4560, ext. 100, para fijar la fecha y hora de la celebración. Para Rentar los Salones Parroquianos que hayan estado registrados en la Parroquia de San Pedro por lo menos durante los últimos tres meses pueden rentar los salones para recepciones y eventos.
