Thoughts from our Pastor Rev. John P. Broheimer Canon Law requires every bishop, priest, deacon, and religious to make an annual spiritual retreat. Fr. Carl just made his annual retreat in Missouri this week, and in the coming week I am travelling to Indiana to make my annual retreat. If you’ve ever been on a retreat, you know that it can be an intense time of spiritual renewal and work. That’s how I hope my retreat is this week. Please pray for me so that God leads me into deep prayer and renewal. Please pray for the other priests who will attend the same retreat. We can always use your prayers. But priests pray all the time, don’t they? Yes, we pray daily in the Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, other devotions like Eucharistic adoration and the Rosary, plus all the other Sacraments we are privileged to celebrate. All of that is good prayer, however, the Church asks that we take time away to pray in an atmosphere of silence without distraction. It’s very important that a priest take his retreat so that he may return refreshed, refocused, and re-energized to allow God to work through him. Retreats are required of priests, but retreats are good for all people who need to step away from life for a few days and pray. This can really give clarity to our minds and hearts when we find ourselves burdened. Not everyone has the privilege or ability to step away for a retreat. All the more reason to make sure we all take the time we need each day to pray and remain close to our Lord. Even Jesus took time away to prayer. How much more do we need to do this? Pro-Life Essay Contest Each year, the Archdiocese of Omaha hosts a Pro-Life Essay Contest for students from January 22 - March 25, including a cash prize for each grade level (grades 7 to 11). Students in grades 7 - 11 are eligible, including students enrolled in Catholic schools, Catholic Home Schools, attending Religious Education classes and Catholic students attending public school. All entries must be typed and proofread, no longer than 400 words and printed on only one side of the paper. In the traditional liturgical calendar this day marks the end of the Christmas Season, and it commemorates the day in which the 40-day-old infant Jesus was presented to the Father at the temple and in which the prophet Simeon declared Christ to be a “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel” (Lk. 2:32). Parishioners may bring their own devotional candles from home to receive the blessing; a limited number of white votive candles will also be available for sale before they are blessed. The 6:30 pm Mass in Spanish on February 2 will begin in the vestibule with a blessing and lighting of candles and a procession will follow in the church.

Pensamientos de Nuestro Párroco Rev. John P. Broheimer El derecho canónico (ley de la Iglesia) exige que cada obispo, sacerdote, diacono y religioso realice anualmente un retiro espiritual. El Padre Carl acaba de cumplir con su retiro anual en Missouri esta semana, y la próxima semana viajaré a Indiana para cumplir con el mío. Si has realizado algún retiro en tu vida, entonces sabes que es un tiempo intenso de renovación espiritual. Así espero que sea mi experiencia esta semana. Por favor recen por mí, que Dios me ayude a adentrarme a la oración y a un estado de renovación. Oren, además, por los demás sacerdotes que estarán en el mismo retiro conmigo. Siempre son de ayuda sus oraciones. Pero sacerdotes siempre se la pasan orando, ¿no es así? Así es. Rezamos todos los días durante la Misa, la Liturgia de las Horas, así como en otras devociones como la adoración Eucarística y el rosario, aparte de los demás sacramentos que somos privilegiados a celebrar. Estas ocasiones de oración son de gran beneficio. No obstante, la Iglesia nos pide que tomemos un tiempo para estar aparte en un ambiente de silencio y sin distracciones. Es sumamente importante que un sacerdote tome su retiro para regresar renovado y reenfocado para ser útil a Dios como su instrumento. Los sacerdotes están obligados a realizar un retiro, pero los retiros benefician además a todos quienes necesitan apartarse de la vida por unos días y rezar. Esta práctica puede dar claridad a nuestras mentes y corazones, especialmente cuando nos sentimos agobiados. No todos tienen el privilegio o el tiempo para un retiro. Con mayor razón debíamos tomar un rato de cada día para orar y acercarse al Señor. Hasta Jesús se apartó para orar. Con mayor razón nosotros, ¿no? Sacramento de Bautismo Porque en enero celebramos el Bautismo del Señor, esto me recuerda que hay demasiados padres que retrasan bautizos de sus hijos. Por favor no se demoren en bautizar a sus hijos pocos meses después de que nazcan. No privan a sus hijos de las gracias del Sacramento. El Sacramento de Bautismo es la puerta a la Salvación. Los padres cometen una gran falta contra Dios y la Iglesia cuando ignoran acercar a sus hijos a recibir los Sacramentos de Iniciación y de inculcarles la fe. Los hijos dependen del cuidado de sus padres y esto incluye de acercarlos a recibir los sacramentos a su debido tiempo. Gracias.

Fiesta de la Presentación del Señor La Fiesta de la Presentación del Señor, el 2 de febrero, originando en el 4º siglo Jerusalén, llego a ser celebrada en Roma a mediados del siglo V bajo su título griego, Ύπαπαντή o, “Fiesta de la Presentación”; también se conoce coloquialmente como Día de la Candelaria debido a que es tradición bendecir cirios devocionales en este día. January 31, 2016 Collection to Help with our Parish Responsibility for the Catholic School Consortium On the weekend of January 30 and 31, we will take up a second collection to help with the Saint Peter Parish responsibility for the support of the Catholic School Consortium. Please be generous. Blessing of Throats In conjunction with tradition, we will bless people’s throats during all Masses on Wednesday, February 3rd, through the intercession of St. Blaise. IV Sunday in Ordinary Time Sacramental Preparation and Devotions Baptism and Godparent Requirements Parents of children who are six years of age or younger and in need of Baptism must be registered, active parishioners of St. Peter for at least three months. Godparents take on serious obligations when they sponsor a person for Baptism and they should be virtuous and faithful Catholics. Godparents must be 16 years old or more, fully initiated, practicing Catholics; if married, godparents must be married in the Catholic Church. Baptisms may be scheduled only after the parents and godparents have completed the requisite classes and the parish office receives a letter from the parish at which the godparents belong stating that the godparents are in good standing with the Catholic Church and are eligible to be sponsors. Parents and sponsors must attend a Baptismal class before the Baptism. Classes in English usually are offered on the fourth Sundays of March, June, September and December from 3:00-5:00 pm. Home School Sacramental Preparation Families who are preparing their children at home to receive a sacrament this year should register at the catechism office by September 1, 2015. Marriage Parishioners who are registered for a minimum of six months are eligible to begin marriage preparation at St. Peter. In addition, the Archdiocese requires a minimum of six months of preparation prior to your wedding date. To begin marriage preparation in English or Spanish, please contact the parish office. Hall Rentals Parishioners registered in St. Peter Parish for at least three months may rent the parish halls for receptions and events. Preparación Sacramental y Devociones Requisitos para Bautismo y Padrinos El Cursillo Pre-Bautismal para Padres y Padrinos es requerido para Bautismos. Todo feligrés de San Pedro debe asistir en las platicas para Bautismos en San Pedro. (Si hay problema con el horario de las pláticas, favor comuníquese con Mary en la oficina parroquial al 402-341-4560, ext. 100.) Los padrinos de otras parroquias deben asistir en platicas en su parroquia propia, o presentar una carta de permiso de su párroco antes de asistir en las pláticas en San Pedro. El cursillo es valido por tres años. Padres de niños que serán Bautizados en la Iglesia de San Pedro deberán estar feligreses registrados y activos de la Parroquia de San Pedro por lo menos de tres meses. Padrinos deberán de ser iniciados completamente, practicando el Catolicismo, asistir en la Misa todo domingo y día de guardar, y si están casados, deberán ser casados por la Iglesia Católica, y tienen 16 años o más. Los padrinos toman sobre sí unas obligaciones muy serias cuando apadrinan una persona para el bautismo y deben ser virtuosos y fieles católicos. Les queremos animar a seleccionar muy cuidadosamente los padrinos. Podrán fijar y pedir el día para los bautismos solamente después de que los papás y los padrinos hayan completado tres clases de requisito y después de que la oficina de la parroquia haya recibido de los padrinos una carta de la parroquia a donde pertenecen los padrinos, en la cual constatan que ellos están en el buen favor de la Iglesia Católica y que son aprobados para ser padrinos. Para padrinos casados, por favor llevar copia de la acta de Matrimonio por la Iglesia Católica. El cursillo Bautismal se ofrecen cada dos meses en tres domingos.
