August 14, 2016 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Have a proper fear of God’s justice by Fr. Jean Nicolas Grou “But the justice of God is very terrible,” you may say, “and I ought always to fear it.” That is quite true. But for whom is His justice terrible? Is it for those children of God who love Him and serve Him as a Father, who are determined to refuse Him nothing and displease Him in nothing? No. If these children love God, God loves them still more; He sees that their faults are not faults of malice but of imperfection and human weakness. At the first look of love and sorrow that they turn to Him, He will forgive them; and even if He has to punish them, He will punish them in this world, in the way that is most advantageous for their salvation. Is it for the sinners who return to God sincerely that His justice is terrible? No. They experience the effects of His great mercy; and often they are treated with so much tenderness and love that even the just are jealous of them. We have only to think of Mary Magdalene and of the Prodigal Son. The Divine Justice is terrible only for those who will not have recourse to his mercy, either through presumption or through despair; for those who love sin and do not wish to give it up; for those whose will is not straightforward and upright; and who would like, if they could, to deceive God Himself. But it quite clear that such sinners as these have not and cannot have any real trust in God; it is clear that they have no right to this trust; for real trust in God can begin only from the time that we begin sincerely to desire to renounce sin and to be overcome with shame and sorrow at having offended God. God wishes us to fear His justice, so that we may avoid sin, so that we may forsake it as soon as possible, so that we may expiate it by penance, so that we may never think we have expiated sufficiently, and so that we may not lightly presume on the hope of pardon. But at the same time He wishes us to trust in Him, to hope for all things in His mercy, to return to Him through love rather than fear, and never to allow ourselves to become prey of a terror that is without foundation and injurious God, and that can have no other effect than to discourage and dishearten us. But how far are we to carry this trust in God? As far as His power and His goodness; as far as our own weakness and our own misery; that is to say, our trust is to be boundless. Thus however difficult perfection may be, we must strive after it with humility and confidence, without being frightened at the difficulties and dangers in the way. But, as, when we consider ourselves, we ought always to say, “ I can do nothing,” so when we consider God, who will be our Guide and Support on the way, we ought to say, “ I can do all things through Him, and by His grace I shall succeed.” (Excerpt from The Spiritual Life)

Registration for CCD You may register your child for our First Communion, Intermediate, and Confirmation programs Monday thru Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. in the CCD office. First Communion: Child must be 6 years old or in the First Grade to enter the program. Students coming back for their 2nd year must also register. Intermediate: This program is for children who have already received the sacrament of First Holy Communion, but are not yet ready for the Confirmation program. This is a great program to continue your child’s growth in the faith. Confirmation: Students entering the program must be within the ages of 13 and 16. Second year students also need to register. You must bring a copy of your child’s Baptismal Certificate (for the First Communion and Confirmation programs) and the registration fee of $25 before August 28, $30 after. *Correction on Note: Registration deadline for all programs will be September 23.

RCIA Classes The RCIA or Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process through which interested adults are gradually introduced to the Roman Catholic faith and way of life. Who is it for? There are three types of persons for which this process is designed: those who have never been baptized, those who have been baptized in a different Christian faith tradition, and those who have been baptized as Catholics but have not received religious instruction and have not received the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Date and Time: Tuesday September 13, 2016 @ 7:15pm Place: St. Faustina Building There is a registration fee of $30. If you have already been baptized please bring a copy of your Baptismal Certificate. Registration will take place on the first day of class. Inscripción para el Catecismo

Tener un apropiado temor de la justicia de Dios por el P. Jean Nicolas Grou "Pero la justicia de Dios es muy terrible", pudiese decir, "y debe uno siempre temer." Eso es muy cierto. Sin embargo, ¿para quien es Su justicia terrible? ¿Acaso es para aquellos hijos de Dios que le aman y le sirven como a un Padre; o aquellos quienes están decididos a negarle nada; de desagradarle en nada? No. Si estos niños aman a Dios, Dios los ama aún más; Él ve que sus faltas no son faltas de malicia, sino de la imperfección y la debilidad humana. A la primera mirada de amor y de dolor que se voltean a Él, Él les perdonará; e incluso si tiene que castigarlos, para dar retribución a ellos en este mundo, lo hace en la forma en que es más ventajosa para su salvación. ¿Acaso su justicia es solo para los pecadores que sinceramente se vuelven a Dios? No. Ellos experimentan los efectos de su gran misericordia; y con frecuencia se les trata con tanta ternura y amor que incluso los justos tienen celos de ellos. Sólo tenemos que pensar en María Magdalena y el Hijo Pródigo. La justicia divina es terrible sólo para aquellos que no quieren recurrir a Su misericordia, ya sea a través de la presunción o por medio de la desesperación; para los que aman el pecado y no desean renunciar a ello; aquellos cuya voluntad no es honesta y recta; y que les gustaría, si pudiesen, engañar a Dios mismo. Pero es evidente que tales pecadores como estos no tienen y no pueden tener ninguna verdadera confianza en Dios; está claro que no tienen derecho a esta confianza; pues la verdadera confianza en Dios sólo puede comenzar desde el momento en que empezamos a desear sinceramente a renunciar al pecado, y a superar la vergüenza y el dolor por haber ofendido a Dios. Dios desea que temamos su justicia, para que podamos evitar el pecado, para que podamos renunciar a ello tan pronto se nos sea posible, para que podamos expiarnos mediante la penitencia, de modo que nunca podamos pensar que hemos expiado lo suficiente, y para que no podamos presumir ligeramente en la esperanza del perdón. Pero, al mismo tiempo Él desea que confiemos en Él, en la esperanza de todas las cosas de su misericordia, para volver a Él por el amor -- en lugar del miedo, y nunca más permitirnos llegar a ser presos de un terror que no tiene fundamento, a un Dios injurioso, y que no puede tener otro efecto mas que en disuadirnos y desalentarnos. Pero ¿hasta dónde vamos a llevar esta confianza en Dios? En cuanto a Su poder y Su bondad; mas allá de nuestra propia debilidad y nuestra propia miseria; es decir, nuestra confianza debe de no tener límites. Aunque este modo de la perfección sea difícil, debemos esforzamos tras él con humildad y confianza, y sin temor a las dificultades y peligros en el camino. Pero, en considerándonos , siempre debemos decir: "No puedo hacer nada", mientras que si tenemos en cuenta a Dios, quien será nuestro Guía y Apoyo en el camino, debemos decir: "Puedo hacer todas las cosas a través de Él, y por su gracia tendré éxito”.

Parents should be wary of online solicitation A study on online victimization found that approximately one in five children receive sexual solicitation from a stranger over the internet. Given today’s reliance on online contact, imagine how much that number has grown over the last several years. Children who use the internet cannot be totally safe from dangers, because the internet is open to all, but parents should monitor activity and sites visited to ensure that their kids aren’t being contacted by predators. Talk to your child about internet safety and appropriate vs. inappropriate communication.
