Faith Formation

The Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven, often shortened to the Assumption and also known as the Falling Asleep of the Blessed Virgin Mary, according to the beliefs of the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy, and parts of Anglicanism, was the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life. The Catholic Church teaches as dogma that the Virgin Mary "having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory".[4] This doctrine was dogmatically defined by Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950, in the apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus by exercising papal infallibility. While the Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church believe in the Dormition of the Theotokos, which is the same as the Assumption,[6] the alleged physical death of Mary has not been dogmatically defined. In Munificentissimus Deus (item 39) Pope Pius XII pointed to the Book of Genesis (3:15) as scriptural support for the dogma in terms of Mary's victory over sin and death as also reflected in 1 Corinthians 15:54: "then shall come to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory". In the churches that observe it, the Assumption is a major feast day, commonly celebrated on August 15th. In many countries, the feast is also marked as a Holy Day of Obligation in the Roman Catholic Church and as a Festival in the Anglican Communion.

LA ASUNCION DE LA SANTISIMA VIRGEN MARIA A LOS CIELOS La fiesta de la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María, se celebra en toda la Iglesia el 15 de agosto. Esta fiesta tiene un doble objetivo: La feliz partida de María de esta vida y la asunción de su cuerpo al cielo. “En esta solemnidad de la Asunción contemplamos a María: ella nos abre a la esperanza, a un futuro lleno de alegría y nos enseña el camino para alcanzarlo: acoger en la fe a su Hijo; no perder nunca la amistad con él, sino dejarnos iluminar y guiar por su Palabra; seguirlo cada día, incluso en los momentos en que sentimos que nuestras cruces resultan pesadas. María, el arca de la alianza que está en el santuario del cielo, nos indica con claridad luminosa que estamos en camino hacia nuestra verdadera Casa, hacia la comunión de alegría y de paz con Dios”.

Jesus knows that what he is saying and doing is a cause of division in the world. His division is one between those that accept the Gospel and those who choose another path. This July I took my retreat/pilgrimage in Spain walking the Camino to Santiago de Compostela. I had not made a good retreat in a few years and I knew that I needed one in order to listen to the Lord and my own heart. There are many Caminos that lead to Santiago. I chose the northern one for its scenery and fewer pilgrims. This gave me the chance to be in silence when I needed to and still engage other pilgrims as the Spirit moved me. The Camino I choose was about 200 miles along the northern coast of Spain then cutting south to Santiago. I was greatly blessed to have chosen this path. The young Spaniards that I met were generous, engaging and fun. They also loved the fact that they had bumped into an American priest on the Camino. Other pilgrims were from Poland, Germany, Korea, Italy and Great Britain. We were young, middle age (that would be me) and folks in their 60’s too! Everyone had a different reason for walking the Camino. Most of the young people from Spain had just finished with their exams at the University and so came to relax and to pray about their future too. All of us were walking, searching and listening. A pilgrimage of self-examination. While I was walking to Santiago there were major terrorist attacks in France and a coup attempt in Turkey. This violence is not what Jesus is referring to in the Gospel today. While France, Germany and Turkey were under siege I found peace walking to places and meeting people that I did not know. I learned a lot from the college age pilgrims about the history of Spain and how it is still a young democracy. Similar to what Paul mentions in our second reading I found myself “surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses” both in Spain and here at St. Rita. All the pilgrims, myself included, had to “persevere” when our feet had blisters and our shoulders tired of carrying our backpacks. Yet we knew the goal of reaching the tomb of the Apostle James was within our strength. Let us use that strength of faith and purpose to bring the “blaze” of the Holy Spirit to those who are downtrodden or burdened and gently bring them back to the path of Christ.

Jesús sabe de lo que esta Del Escritorio diciendo y como esta Del Párroco viviendo va a ser causa de división. Pero esta división es entre los del camino del Evangelio y los que escogen otro camino. Este Julio tuve la gran oportunidad de hacer mi retiro y peregrinación en España caminando a Santiago de Compostela. No he hecho un buen retiro en algunos años y sentí la necesidad de tomar un paso atrás para escuchar a mi Señor y a mi corazón. Hay muchos Caminos a Santiago. Yo escogí el Camino del Norte por la vista del mar y menos peregrinos. Fue una oportunidad de estar en silencio pero también conocer algunos peregrinos mas como el Espíritu me movió. El Camino que hice fue mas de 300 kilómetros por la costa del norte de España bajando hacia el sur por Santiago. Escogiendo este camino fue una bendición grande. Allá conocí a varios jóvenes de España quien fueron muy generosos, entusiasmados y divertidos. Ellos estuvieron muy fascinados por haber encontrado un sacerdote Americano en el Camino. Otros peregrinos fueron de Polonia, Alemania, Corea, Italia y por supuesto México! Fuimos jóvenes, adultos, familias y gente en sus años 60! Cada persona tuvimos una razón diferente por haber tomado el camino. Muchos de los jóvenes de España acaban de terminar con sus exámenes en la Universidad. Ellos caminaron para relajarse y rezar sobre su futuro. Cada un tuvimos que escuchar, caminar y buscar a Cristo por nuestra propia auto-examinación. Mientras estuve caminando a Santiago hubo mucha violencia en Francia y Turquía. Este violencia no es lo que se refiere Jesús en el evangelio de hoy. En el medio de esta violencia, casi guerra en Europa, yo pude encontrar una paz conociendo a lugares y gente diferente. Aprendí mucho de los jóvenes Españoles sobre la historia de España y que su país esta en su infancia con respecto a la democracia que empezó allá solamente en los años 70. San Pablo nos menciona una “multitud de antepasados nuestros” que ya son testigos del Señor Jesús para nosotros. Mirando hacia atrás estuve rodeado por los testigo allá en el Camino y acá en Sta. Rita. Como peregrino tuvimos que perseverar cuando nuestros pies nos dolía y los hombros se cansaron de cargar la mochila. Pero sabíamos que la meta de la tumba de Santiago estuvo a nuestro alcanza. Que nosotros podemos utilizar la fuerza de la fe y el fuego del Espíritu Santo para llevar los que están agobiados y quebrantados de la vida y con bondad y cariño llévalos una vez mas al Camino del Señor.
