Views from Fr. Larry Pichard, Pastor

Visiones del Párroco, Pbro. Larry Pichard

Today I would like to pass on to you some information sent to me by Catholic Charities, a ministry of our Diocese, that serves many people in need. Do you remember the tornado that tore through Rowlett and Garland right around last Christmas, leaving hundreds of people homeless and without even the most basic things needed to live and maintain a job? In early January our Diocese asked all parishes to conduct a special collection with proceeds going to help the survivors. Through our generosity and that of fellow parishes, we raised more than $1.2 million! That allows Catholic Charities to really assist 753 tornado victims—more than 280 households. Catholic Charities hired 3 full-time staff members to assist those families with resources and services. They helped them with medical supplies and advised them how to negotiate the frustrating task of dealing with home insurance and rebuilding. Perhaps you remember the images on TV and other media—homes leveled, possessions scattered all over if not completely lost forever, people in their cars blown off roads and bridges. You have been very generous ($16,000), but many times we do not see the fruit of our generosity. It’s good to know how our sacrifices have helped people rebuild their lives. We know that “there for the grace of God go I.” We all know that tornado could easily wipe us out, so our hearts are especially merciful to those innocent victims and survivors.

CLOTHE A CHILD It’s that time of the year again, and we are excited to announce the campaign has begun! A heartfelt thank you for your monetary contributions and the assistance by so many volunteers last year. Last year was the first year we did not meet our goals, so let’s all join in and make this year a huge success by showing CAC what St. Francis is capable of! This program would cease to exist without your charitable hearts and generosity. As many of you know The Clothe a Child mission is to assist the clothing needs of economically disadvantaged children in our communities through partnership with Kohl’s Department Store. The goal is to provide children with a $100 voucher for their clothing needs and to acquire volunteers for the shopping experience. The Clothe a Child community has set a goal for this year to be: 3,000 children and 1,800 vol-

unteers. The 2016 goal for St. Francis is to clothe 350 children and to acquire 325 volunteers! Please don’t miss out on this great opportunity to give back to your community. The shopping special event dates are: October 15th, 22nd, and 29th. We will have our table in the Great Parish Hall on the weekends of August 27th, September 10th and September 27th which will allow for volunteer registration and donations. Donations can also be made online: http://www.stfoafrisco.org/donations.asp For more information please email us at: [email protected]

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a process offered to adults who wish to discern their call to full membership in the Catholic Church. STEWARDSHIP WEEKEND The Stewardship weekend is this weekend. During the Masses on August 13/14, parishioners actively walking the path of Christian Discipleship spoke about their involvement in ministry life at our parish. We hope that after listening to them, you will consider becoming involved in parish ministry life. After all Masses on August 20/21, the parish will host a Ministry Sign-up event in the Great Hall , where many of our ministries will be looking for new members. There, you will have the opportunity to ask questions about a ministry of your interest. We encourage you to consider the many choices and make one commitment—we believe there is something for everyone. Start simple, but definitely start! You will be glad you did. - The Parish Stewardship Committee

AIDS OUTREACH MINISTRY "THANK YOU ALL for the tremendous support during the recent AIDS Outreach Ministry collection weekend! It is truly a parish wide ministry! The residents we serve greatly benefit from your generosity and they feel strengthened in knowing people are praying for them as they continue to live with this disease. The ASD residents & ministry volunteers are deeply grateful and cannot thank the people of St. Francis of Assisi enough!!" Please contact Asha Heller at [email protected] if you would like to volunteer with food donations.
