At the 10am mass on Easter Sunday there will be a celebration of "Salubong!" What does "Salubong" mean? “Salubong” is loosely translated as the Easter Vigil, but it should have been a “meeting or a reunion.” This and other Easter Catholic practices are usually done at dawn if not at dusk. It is a procession of two groups one heralding the resurrection of Christ and to a reunion with the other group representing Mary and other female disciples of Christ. The "Salubong" or the reunion of the two groups usually happen at the church grounds and this culminates with the celebration of the Holy Mass. It will start at the regular entrance procession from the front doors of the church in two groups with the statue of the Risen Christ followed by male angels and all men in the congregation and the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary followed by girl angels and all women in the congregation. The groups will process along the side aisles and meet in the front of the altar. An angel will remove the veil of the Blessed Virgin Mary while all the angels will sing the "Regina Caeli," which is, "O Queen of Heaven." Then mass will begin. Everybody is invited to join in the procession. Thank you!

GETTING TO KNOW OUR CATECHISTS Z. “BOBBI” MARTINEZ Bobbi is a catechist for Grade 2-B on Tuesday afternoon. Bobbi feels that God is always challenging her in ways she sometimes cannot fully comprehend. Yet, she trust God as she is eager to learn from those challenges and she loves to discover new things. What Bobbi loves the most of our Catholic faith is THE MASS! She loves to sing, to recite the rosary and to work for vocations. Bobbi has work with children and she loves teaching them and learning along with them. She says: “I see the primary purpose of religious education to seek the Lord and to place him at the center of our lives”. Pre-K 3 Mrs. Jacobson & Mrs. Escheik The P-K-3 children celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday on April 2. Everyone enjoyed watching a short video about Dr. Seuss and learned that he was once a child just like them and loved going to the Zoo with his dad. During the week the children enjoyed listening to many of his books like Dr. Seuss’s ABC, The Cat in The Hat and Green Eggs and Ham among others. At the end of the week they made a tally chart about the book they enjoyed the most. Green Eggs and Ham was the most popular book in class. As part of Dr. Seuss’ activities the children also had fun making their own “Cat in the Hat” hats which they proudly took home.

TUITION ANGEL FUND As we know, the downturn of the economy in recent years has had a tremendous impact on all of us. Many families who have students in Catholic schools feel the ever increasing pressures of meeting their family's needs along with the additional impact of tuition. We here at Saint Joseph Academy have established a "Tuition Angel Fund". The purpose of the fund is to help families who are struggling financially yet are committed to providing their child(ren) with a Catholic education. We look to our parishioners to help us keep this vital resource available to the young families of our parish. Please consider making regular donations to this fund knowing that you are helping spread the word of God through your generosity by supporting some very needy families and their children in Saint Joseph Academy. Donations may also be made in memory of a loved one or a friend with an acknowledgement being sent to their family. We even have children that look to share their blessings by asking their families to make donations to the "Tuition Angel" fund instead of receiving presents at birthdays, holidays, etc. Also, if your resources are such, please consider "adopting" a student, thus supporting a student(s) by paying all or part of the monthly tuition. We have many single parents and families who desperately would like their child to attend Saint Joseph Academy but do not have the resources to pay. Page 6 THE NEW COVENANT When the prophet Jeremiah coined the term “new covenant” he was actually doing something quite radical. For the Jewish people, there was only one covenant, the one made between the Lord God and Israel through Moses at Mount Sinai. For Jeremiah to suggest that God would somehow supersede the covenant with a new one would have sounded audacious to Jewish ears. But in this way he is a predecessor of Jesus who, in the Gospel of John, is continually portrayed as superseding the past, establishing the reign of God in a new way. And in today’s Gospel passage, Jesus the “new covenant” speaks the language of his “new commandment” of love when he tells of the dying grain of wheat, and of our own need to die to self in order to be raised with Christ. As Lent ends and we prepare to enter into Holy Week, the dying grain of wheat serves as an excellent symbol of the kind of dying and self‑sacrifice to which disciples are called, a symbol of that new covenant written deep within our hearts. March 22nd, 2015 LA NUEVA ALIANZA Cuando el profeta Jeremías creó el término “nueva alianza” hacía algo muy radical. Para el pueblo judío, sólo había una alianza, la que el Señor Dios había hecho con Israel por medio de Moisés en el Monte Sinaí. Cuando Jeremías dice que de alguna manera Dios va a reemplazar la antigua alianza con una nueva, seguro que sus oyentes pensaban que era algo muy atrevido. De ese modo Jeremías es un predecesor de Jesús, quien, en el Evangelio de Juan se presenta siempre como alguien que reemplaza el pasado, estableciendo el Reino de Dios de una manera nueva. Y en el pasaje del Evangelio de hoy, Jesús, “la nueva alianza” habla con el lenguaje del “nuevo mandamiento” de amor cuando menciona el grano de trigo que muere y nuestra propia muerte al egoísmo para poder resucitar con Cristo. Al finalizar la Cuaresma y al prepararnos a entrar en la Semana Santa, el grano de trigo que muere es un símbolo excelente del tipo de muerte y autosacrificio al que los discípulos están llamados, un símbolo de esa nueva alianza escrita en lo más profundo de nuestro corazón. On Monday, March 30, the Mass of Chrism will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Basilica at 8pm. The liturgy is a beautiful gathering of the faithful throughout the church of Newark. In the Mass of Chrism, the bishop blesses the oil of catechumens, the oil of the sick, and the oil of chrism which are distributed to each of the parishes in the archdiocese. The cathedral is filled to capacity for this celebration, so we are asked to submit a list of names of those attending. Please contact the rectory office before Wednesday, March 25 if you would like to attend. It is recommended to arrive by 7pm in order to be seated during the Mass. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As we approach Holy Week, the creative juices of the ancient church of Jerusalem begin to shape our journey. In old Jerusalem at this season of the year, the attempt was made to recall the events leading up to Christ’s passion. Those attempts were based not only on time, with celebrations of events as close to the day and hour as possible, but also on people’s best guesses as to the actual place of these events. Vast numbers of pilgrims flooded the city during the forty days of Lent, many of them catechumens in their last stages of preparation for initiation. The fourth-century Spanish nun Egeria wrote a delightfully detailed diary of her experience of this lively and aerobic liturgy, which involved hearty singing, strong preaching, and nimble processions across vast and arduous terrain. Much of this energy was lost over the centuries, with the procession of palms a noteworthy exception. Northern climates had to reinterpret this Jerusalem liturgy, using forsythia, willow, or olive branches, but to this day the entry into Holy Week by a community on the move accompanied by joyful song hearkens back to a venerable tradition. Egeria’s letters were rediscovered a little more than a hundred years ago, but they reveal a pattern of prayer: full, conscious, active participation, to which we have a right and a duty. —Rev. El lunes 30 de marzo, la Misa crismal se celebrá en la Basílica del Sagrado Corazón a las 8pm. La liturgia será un hermoso encuentro de los fieles en toda la iglesia de Newark. En la Misa Crismal, el obispo bendecirá el óleo de los catecúmenos, el óleo de los enfermos, y el óleo del crisma que se distribuyen a todas las parroquias de la arquidiócesis. El canto: “Una espiga dorada por el sol”, de Cesáreo Gabaráin, nos recuerda que los cristianos somos trigo del mismo sembrador. Es Jesús quien nos siembra, nos cultiva, nos cosecha, nos tritura, nos amasa, y nos hace un solo pan consagrado a Dios. Somos granos de trigo que, unidos formamos el pan de la comunión que es comunidad. Para esto, cada uno debe morir a sus egoísmos y preferencias. JESUS THE HEALER—“A Living Meditation on Healing” On Friday, March 27th at 8:00 the parish will host “Jesus the Healer”, a highly dramatic presentation of the powerful miracles and healing events of Jesus’ life , performed by the Franciscan Mystery Players from Notre Dame Church in North Caldwell. By sharing “Jesus the Healer” with others, the Mystery Players commit themselves to offering strength and peace to all those who are suffering. Thousands of lives have been touched by the play’s powerful witness of faith, hope, and love. At the end of each presentation, there is an opportunity for individual prayers for healing. Please plan on joining us for this highly effective way of preparing for Holy Week.
