FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

April 10, 2011

Dear Parishioners, Cherry trees, Forsythia, Red Bud trees, and Daffodils are now in full bloom on the spring stage. Tulips are awaiting their cue to open within a few days. Spring has finally arrived. The following, sent to me from my niece, Cheryl, is most appropriate - although the spring flowers have yet to poke through the ground in Rhode Island. The Daffodil Principle is a reminder to all of us that it is the little things in life that really matter most and that every one can make a difference. May it also be a reminder to all not to put off until tomorrow the kindnesses we can do today. Don’t look back at what you should have done, but to the present and the future and what you can do today. The Daffodil Principle Several times my daughter had telephoned to say, "Mother, you must come to see the daffodils before they are over." I wanted to go, but it was a two hour drive from Laguna to Lake Arrowhead. "I will come next Tuesday", I promised a little reluctantly on her third call. Next Tuesday dawned cold and rainy. Still, I had promised and reluctantly I drove there. When I finally walked into Carolyn's house, I was welcomed by the joyful sounds of happy children. I delightedly hugged and greeted my grandchildren. "Forget the daffodils, Carolyn! The road is invisible in these clouds and fog, and there is nothing in the world except you and these children that I want to see badly enough to drive another inch!" My daughter smiled calmly and said, "We drive in this all the time, Mother." “Well, you won't get me back on the road until it clears, and then I'm heading for home!" I assured her. "But first we're going to see the daffodils. It's just a few blocks," Carolyn said "I'll drive. I'm used to this." "Carolyn,” I said sternly, "Please turn around” “It's all right Mother, I promise. You will never forgive yourself if you miss this experience." After about 20 minutes, we turned onto a small gravel road and I saw a small church. On the far side of the church, I saw a hand lettered sign with an arrow that read, "Daffodil Garden." We got out of the car, each took a child's hand, and I followed Carolyn down the path. Then, as we turned a corner, I looked up and gasped. Before me lay the most glorious sight. It looked as though someone had taken a great vat of gold and poured it over the mountain peak and its surrounding slopes. The flowers were planted in majestic, swirling patterns, great ribbons and swaths of deep orange, creamy white, lemon yellow, salmon pink, and saffron and butter yellow. Each different-colored variety was planted in large groups so that it swirled and flowed like its own river with its own unique hue. There were five acres of flowers. "Who did this?" I asked Carolyn. "Just one woman", Carolyn answered. "She lives on the property. That's her home." Carolyn pointed to a well-kept A -frame house, small and modestly sitting in the midst of all that glory. We walked up to the house. On the patio, we saw a poster. "Answers To the Questions I Know You Are Asking", was the headline. The first answer was a simple one. "50,000 bulbs," it read. The second answer was, "One at a time, by one woman. Two hands, two feet and one brain”. The third answer was, “Began in 1958.” Formed, that moment was a lifechanging experience. I thought of this woman whom I had never met, who, more than 40 years before, had begun, one bulb at a time, to bring her vision of beauty and joy to an obscure mountaintop. Planting one bulb at a time, year after year, this unknown woman had forever changed the world in which she lives: One day at a time, she had created something of extraordinary magnificence, beauty and inspiration. The principle her daffodil garden taught is one of the greatest principles of celebration. That is, learning to move toward our goals and desires one step at a time often just one baby step at a time- and learning to love the doing, learning to use the accumulation of time. When we multiply tiny pieces of time with small increments of daily effort, we, too, will find we can accomplish magnificent things. We can change the world.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

April 10, 2011

"It makes me sad in a way," I admitted to Carolyn. "What might I have accomplished if I had thought of a wonderful goal 35 or 40 years ago and had worked away at it `one bulb at a time' through all those years? Just think what I might have been able to achieve!" My daughter summed up the message of the day in her usual direct way. "Start tomorrow… -Jaroldeen A. Edwards Remember, we can never make a better past, but we all can make a better future. Have a great week!

PRO-LIFE CORNER Human embryos are living individuals of the species Homo sapiens who are in the beginning stages of their natural development. We were all embryos at one time just as all of us have been infants, adolescents and, now, adults. When we see people supporting embryonic stem cell research, let’s call it what it is – embryodestructive stem cell research. And it involves the destruction not of potential human beings, but the destruction of human beings with potential Through Palm Sunday, April 17, 2011 - 40 Days for Life Prayer Vigil at American Women Services, 8316 Arlington Blvd, Fairfax, VA 22031. FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

Do You Have a Healthy Heart? We hear an awful lot about the “healthy heart” these days. In commercials, news articles, food product information, the message is geared to keeping or attaining a “healthy heart”. And so we take the time to look at our hearts, not physically, but spiritually. The Gospel this Sunday tells us the story of Lazarus – his death and his return to life upon the command of Jesus, “unbind him and let him go free!” Let us take time this week to ponder these words of Jesus. What within ourselves binds our hearts? What needs to be loosed so that we might go free? Let us examine our faults to discover what prevents our hearts from experiencing fullness of life, and the ability to be strengthened by all that is life-giving. It is up to us to decide if we want to keep ourselves and others, bound through anger, bitterness and hard-heartedness, or do we want to set ourselves and others free through love, forgiveness, compassion and mercy. The choice is up to us, but Jesus shows us the way and invites us to walk with him. “I came for the cookies, but I found love and Jesus.” Be a part of the flame that draws souls to Christ. Bake cookies for the MEN’S KAIROS prison retreat scheduled for this Fall at Fluvanna Men’s Prison beginning April 27, 2011. This gift of love requires a lot of cookies – about 4,000 dozen for each retreat. Each team member is responsible for bringing 100 dozen home made cookies for the weekend. The types of cookies needed are: Oatmeal, Peanut Butter, Sugar, Cinnamon, Ginger, Molasses, Chocolate, and Chocolate Chip. Cookies should be 2 inches in diameter and not more than 1/2 inch thick. No icing, sugar, sprinkles or any other type of coating on the outside. No nuts, raisins, fruits, or M&M’s on the inside. Packing the Cookies Bag thoroughly cooled cookies in a Quart-Sized Zip Lock bag, 12 to a bag. Please use only a quart-Sized Zip Lock Bag. If you fail to cool your cookies before bagging them, they will stick together and crumble and may not be admitted into the prison. Label each bag with the type of cookie. Freeze all cookies if not delivering within 3 days of the start of the retreat. For recipes and information about KAIROS, visit the KAIROS Buckingham web site http://kairos-bkcc.org/sites/default/files/documents/ KairosCookiesBrochure35.pdf or call Diane Bayne 703-763-7230. Please place your cookies in the kitchen opposite the church office or give them to a staff member. Final pickup for the Fluvanna weekend is Tuesday, April 26th.

High School and Jr. ViBe: What is ViBe?? If you are new to the Parish or just never really knew what ViBe was, I’m here to help! At first glance all the activities that Nativity has to offer can be overwhelming. If you happen to look over the different groups and see ViBe, you might be thinking what a strange name for a group!! If you are, don’t write it off so quickly. If you are in 7th-12th grade this is the group for you! ViBe is Nativity’s youth group. The name ViBe was chosen with the hope that everyone who enters our doors will feel comfortable enough to be real. We live in a world that tells us we have to be a certain way, and feel certain things. Here at ViBe we encourage all teens to first be real with God, real with themselves, and as a result of those two things, be real with each other. each . Nativity Youth Ministry offers opportunities for spiritual growth, service projects, retreats, summer Workcamp, and fellowship with other teens through meals, games, etc. The main ViBe program is on Sunday nights for both Jr. High and High School students. At Youth Group, every Sunday is different but always includes food, friends, fun activities, teachings, discussions, music, etc. Youth Group is available for all 7th12th graders and all are welcome to bring their friends!! Youth interested in ViBe should contact Meghan O'Connor by phone or e-mail to be notified of activities and times. 703-4552400 or [email protected] The next Vibe/Jr.ViBe meeting will be on April 17th from 6:30-8:30pm in the APR. CHANGE IN WORKCAMP MEETING TIME! The next Workcamp meeting is on April 12th from 6:00 - 7:00pm in the Parish Hall. If you are interested in finding out more information about our summer Workcamp trip please feel free to contact Meghan O’Connor at 703-4552400 or [email protected].

OPERATION STARFISH® N EWS www.operation-starfish.org

From the U.S. Navy to the White House – Building Houses Together In the last year, more than 20 houses in our Nativity Village projects in Haiti were sponsored by individuals and organizations outside Nativity parish. We worked with Lemoore Naval Air Station in California, and with the White House Historical Association in D.C., as others have learned about Operation Starfish and joined Nativity parish to make a difference in Haiti. Lemoore’s Guardian Angel Chapel raised funds for a house in Nativity Village at Chastenoye, and the White House Historical Association provided funding for two houses there. Court St. Joseph, a Catholic Daughters group in Sykesville, MD, has built two houses with us and they are working on their third. St. Clement School in Chicago, St. Mark School here in Vienna, VA, and St. Ann School in Quincy, MA have all supported our housebuilding work. St. Mark’s did two houses this year. St. Mary of Sorrows parish is currently working with us to build a house a year through their Social Justice program. Three Fox Vineyards in The Plains, VA completed a house, and Lake Braddock Secondary School’s 8th grade civics curriculum inspired students to do projects on poverty in Haiti, which led to funding for a house, with enough left over to send 20 children to school for a year. A young couple in Richmond, VA, in lieu of favors for guests at their wedding, donated a house in their guests’ honor. Several families, both inside and outside our parish, have sponsored houses to remember loved ones or as alternative Christmas, anniversary or birthday remembrances. As Fr. Martin says, “Starfish is not about the money, it’s about changing hearts, and bringing people and communities closer together in service to the poor.” Nativity’s Operation Starfish has strengthened our parish community and has welcomed others, far and near, into our community of love and service. A Penny A Gallon For Starfish In April, Cardinal Plaza Shell will automatically donate 1 penny to Operation Starfish for EVERY gallon of gas pumped. Pumping gas can build a house for a family in Haiti. CP Shell will also donate 5% of any auto repairs to Operation Starfish throughout 2011. Just tell the service desk you’re with Nativity Church. Cardinal Plaza Shell is located at the corner of Old Keene Mill Rd. and Rolling Rd. in Springfield. Call 703-451-6232. High Tea Anyone? On Sunday, April 17, Global Woman (http://www.myglobalwoman.com/) will host a high tea at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Capitol Hill, Washington, DC. Proceeds will go towards construction of houses in Nativity Village at Chastenoye and towards support of the Little Children of Jesus Home, a Food For The Poor facility caring for handicapped orphans. Nativity parishioners visited Little Children of Jesus on our last mission trip to Haiti. For more information, contact Lina Frank at 571-436-3171, or [email protected]. For more information on Nativity’s Operation Starfish®, contact Jim McDaniel at [email protected], or call the Church office. Those Happy Days are here again! Paul VI Catholic High School’s PVI Players is proudly presenting the brand new musical Happy Days based on the old TV show. Return with us to the days of Fonzie, Ritchie, Mr. and Mrs. C., greasers, sock hops, and the fabulous Pinky Tuscadero for a sparkling evening of comedy, music, and old friends. Performances are April 15 and 16 at 7:30, and April 17 at 2:00. Tickets are $10 for students and seniors, and $15 for adults. FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

Muerte y vida

April 10, 2011

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

April 10, 2011

Javier Leoz LA LUZ ESTA ENCENDIDA PARA TI !! FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

April 10, 2011
