“FROM THE OGLE OFFICE” Dear Friends,

Queridos hermanos:

You may have noticed upon our altar a standing cross in recent weeks. We’re not just trying to decorate differently. There is a profound theological reason for this liturgical touch, having to do with the very nature of the Mass itself. As many of the older of use remember, before the Second Vatican Council, the mass was celebrated according to the so-called “Tridentine Rite”, and now known as the “Extraordinary Form of the Mass”. It was celebrated in Latin, and with the priest facing the tabernacle— appearing to have his “back to the people”. However, it was not that the priest was turning away from the people, but rather that the priest and the people together were both facing the Crucifix of Christ, with the priest leading the people in prayer, but all praying to Christ. The term used for this was “ad orientem”, or toward the East— symbolic of Christ’s rising. The priest would turn to face the people for the brief moments of dialogue that were clearly addressed to the people, such as “The Lord be with you”, “Pray brethren”, “Behold the Lamb of God”, et al. In the words of Catholic blogger Fr Gary Coulter: “…Since the earliest times, Mass has been celebrated with both the people and priest facing the same direction, ad orientem, toward the East. ….When the priest and faithful together face the same way, it manifests our common act of worship; it symbolizes our common pilgrimage toward the returning Lord, the Sun of Justice and our hope in the resurrection and the world beyond the here-and-now, our pilgrimage to the Promised Land.” After the council concluded in 1967, the Catholic Church translated its rituals into the vernacular language of each country, and the Mass itself was changed to make its essentials more evident—the so-called “Novus Ordo”, which became the Ordinary Form of the Mass. At this point the altar of sacrifice was separated from the tabernacle and Mass was celebrated “facing the people”. Although this makes the Mass more visible to all, yet it can give the impression that the priest is praying to the people and vice versa. Worse still, it can make it appear the priest is in some sense “performing” for the people rather than offering prayers to God. A well-catechized Catholic, of course, would never think this, but others may get the sense of being at a TV cooking demonstration or talk show, rather than participating in the Sacred Synaxis and entering into the timeless moment of God’s eternal Now in the paschal Mystery of the Mass. In order to ameliorate this problem, Pope Benedict XVI suggested in his 1986 book The Feast of Faith that it would be an acceptable optional practice to place a crucifix between the priest and people on the altar, so that everyone is facing Christ primarily, and each other only secondarily. If you ever see Pope Benedict celebrate Mass, you will see that this has become the standard for all papal Masses whether in Rome or elsewhere. Thus, both priest and people can be said to face “ad orientem” in a virtual way. We have adopted this practice now in our parish in hope that our awareness will be strengthened that at Holy Mass we pray “Through Christ and with Him and in Him…..”

Puede que haya observado en nuestro altar en las últimas semanas un crucifijo. No sólo estamos tratando de decorar de forma diferente. Hay una profunda razón teológica para este toque litúrgico, tienen que ver con la propia naturaleza de la Santa Misa. Si alguna vez ves Papa Benedicto celebrar misa, verá que se ha convertido en el estándar para misas papales todos si en Roma o en otros lugares. Así, tanto el sacerdote y el pueblo puede decirse que "ad orientem" se enfrentan de manera virtual.
