La Educación Para Adultos Por Jesús López-Varela El Consorcio del Estado de California para la Educación de los Adultos (CSCAE) decretó la semana del 11 al 15 de marzo como la Semana de la Educación para Adultos. Sin embargo, estas fechas no son solamente para celebrar los 150 años que dichas escuelas han estado sirviendo fielmente a la colectividad del estado de California, sino también para llamar la atención de los funcionarios de gobierno quienes planean desaparecer gradualmente estas fuentes educativas y de empleo, alegando que no hay suficientes fondos para su sostenimiento, sin tomar en cuenta el daño que van a causar en nuestras comunidades. Para que nos demos cuenta de la gravedad del problema, revisemos estos números: En 2009 la Legislatura Estatal dio luz verde a los distritos de educación de kínder a high school para que gastaran el dinero destinado a la educación para adultos, y aun así todavía recortó los fondos en un 20 por ciento. Luego, los fondos a nivel estatal que en 2007-2008 eran de $750 millones se vieron reducidos a $300 millones en 2012 lo que ocasionó que de 25 mil personas inscritas en Oakland, los números se redujeran a 1,300. Y lo mismo sucedió en San José donde la cantidad de estudiantes se redujo de 10 mil a 2,300 en cinco años. (Fuen-

La alternativa que el gobierno estatal plantea a los adultos que desean continuar con su educación es que se inscriban en los colegios comunitarios. Esta alternativa no es tal porque, si bien los colegios proveen servicios invaluables a quienes desean obtener un título, también cobran cantidades estratosféricas a quienes no califican para obtener ayuda financiera. Dentro de esta clasificación se encuentran aquellas personas que no han podido regularizar su status migratorio, ni las que perciben más dinero del rango establecido para tal fin. Por lo que a la Escuela para Adultos de Oxnard (OAS) respecta, esta institución ha estado en el área desde hace 75 años, y son miles quienes se han beneficiado con sus servicios. Dentro de sus aulas hemos aprendido inglés, nos hemos capacitado en algún oficio, hemos tomado clases constructivas a la vez que divertidas, y algunos hasta hemos encontrado empleo en ella. Por eso es una lástima que un centro educativo con estas características esté en riesgo de desaparecer. No sé cómo podemos imaginar el futuro de aquellas personas que por malas decisiones tuvieron que dejar los estudios y que ahora, con cinco canas más y la madurez que les faltó en sus años mozos quieren recomponer el ca-

mino para dar a sus familias un mejor futuro. “Todos merecemos una segunda oportunidad. De verdad estoy agradecida con ustedes por permitirme terminar mi high school”. — expresó Lucila a OAS, una estudiante recién graduada de preparatoria en esta institución. Por su parte, Trinity, estudiante del programa Asistente Médico en Camarillo, comentó: “He estado desempleada por dos años por no tener una carrera. Ojalá que cuando me gradúe pueda encontrar un trabajo que me permita sostener a mi familia sin tener que depender del gobierno. [Pero] lo mejor de todo es que no tuve que pagar los miles de dólares que cuesta esta carrera en una escuela privada”. Y así como ellas, muchas otras personas se han estado manifestando en favor de la educación para adultos, no solamente ante el Distrito Unificado de Escuelas Preparatorias de Oxnard, sino ante el gobierno del Estado a través del internet. Renee Lane, maestra de inglés como segundo idioma en OAS declara lo que bien podría resumirse como el verdadero rol que la educación para adultos juega en la comunidad. “La educación para adultos es una herramienta viable para muchos padres y adultos carentes de preparación académica que necesitan ayudar a que sus hijos progresen y que a la vez aporten su esfuerzo para crear

un futuro brillante para nuestro estado”, comentó la maestra Lane. Una cosa es cierta, la educación para adultos es necesaria para la salud social y económica de nuestro estado. Es efectiva por cuanto a la relación costo-beneficio, es la solución para el entrenamiento laboral, la recuperación de créditos de preparatoria, la obtención del GED, la preparación para la ciudadanía y, sobre todo, para el aprendizaje del inglés como segundo idioma. Por eso todos debemos involucrarnos para defender la educación a bajo costo que aporta OAS. La Semana de la Educación para Adultos debe ser no sólo de celebración, sino de reflexión y aporte. 3 Arrestos Por Droga En Rio Mesa High School Viene de la página A1 De acuerdo a las autoridades, el pasado 13 de marzo, aproximadamente a las 11:15 am, un policía de la escuela Rio Mesa High School, ubicada en el 545 Central Avenue, en El Rio, fue llamado para asistir a una estudiante de 15 años de edad que había perdido el sentido. Informes policíacos indican que inmediatamente se hizo un llamado para que la joven recibiera asistencia médica y para que se determinara que era lo que le sucedía. La joven fue transportada al hospital St. John's Regional Medical Center en Oxnard donde recibió atención médica y después fue dada de alta. Las autoridades indican que mediante la investigación de los hechos lograron determinar que la joven había consumido un producto de chocolate mezclado con marihuana el cual causó que perdiera el sentido y estuviera incoherente.

De acuerdo a reportes, por medio de la investigación los detectives encargados del caso determinaron que Kelvin Mathew Rodríguez, de 19 años de edad, presuntamente le había proporcionado el producto a un joven de 14 años de edad para que lo vendiera. Segun las autoridades, el joven presuntamente le vendió la mezcla de chocolate y marihuana a la estudiante y ella después la compartió con tres estudiantes más. Rodríguez fue arrestado después de que la Unidad de Narcóticos de

la Oficina del Alguacil ejerciera una orden de cateo en su residencia por la venta de marihuana y por utilizar a un joven menor de edad para vender una sustancia controlada. Rodríguez fue después transportado a la Cárcel del Condado de Ventura, de acuerdo a informes. El joven de 14 años de edad fue arrestado por la venta de marihuana y trasladado al Centro de Justicia Juvenil del Condado. La joven que perdió el sentido, también fue arrestada y enfrenta cargos por proveer marihuana a otros, segun

la policía. Las autoridades indican que el éxito de este caso fue posible gracias a la asociación entre los administradores de la escuela preparatoria Rio Mesa High School y la Oficina del Alguacil del Condado de Ventura. Las autoridades mencionaron también que son este tipo de esfuerzos y enlaces comunitarios los que ayudan a proteger a los jóvenes y a combatir la distribución de las drogas en nuestras escuelas y en nuestra comunidad.

MARCHA PARA FESTEJAR EL LEGADO DE CESAR CHAVEZ Con una misa celebrada en la Iglesia de Cristo Rey el pasado domingo 24 de marzo, el Sindicato de Trabajadores Agrícolas, UFW por sus siglas en inglés, junto con diversas organizaciones comunitarias defensoras de los derechos de los inmigrantes, iniciaron el festejo para celebrar el natalicio y el legado de César Chávez, a 20 años de su fallecimiento, acaecido en abril de 1993. La iglesia donde se llevó a cabo el evento se ubica en la esquina que forman las Calles Cooper Road y Roosevelt, en el conocido y popular vecindario de La Colonia, en Oxnard, en el que viven una gran cantidad de personas que trabajan en los campos de éste Condado de Ventura y que fue recorrido muchas veces por César Chávez en los años 80s luchando para dar a los campesinos una mejor vida y mejores condiciones laborales. Al termino de la celebración religiosa, el Sr. Arturo Rodríguez, dirigente nacional del sindicato UFW, tomó la palabra para dirigirse a los presentes en el templo y decirles de la gran posibilidad que existe de que en este año los legisladores puedan ponerse de acuerdo y aprobar una reforma migratoria que podría sacar de las sombras a las 11 millones de personas que actualmente residen en los Estados Unidos sin permiso para trabajar legalmente. Ya afuera del templo había una gran multitud de personas, unos 2,500 aproximadamente, algunos de ellos ondeando banderas del sindicato, otros con pancartas y letreros de las organizaciones a las que pertenecen, pero todos con la esperanza reflejada en el rostro de que ahora si se pueda dar la tan ansiada reforma migratoria. La comitiva recorrió varias calles de La Colonia para terminar en un mitin en la escuela primaria César Chávez. La primera persona en tomar la palabra fue la Sra. Alicia Flores, directora de La Hermandad, quien dijo haber estado en la semana en el estado de Nebraska, donde el alcalde de Omaha dijo que ese pueblo estuvo a punto de desaparecer de no haber sido por los inmigrantes que llegaron ahí y lo salvaron, dándole nueva vida, por lo que la percepción acerca de los inmigrantes, sobre todo latinos está cambiando, por lo que es importante participar en todos los eventos para apoyar la reforma migratoria. Posteriormente hizo uso del micrófono la Congresista Julia Brownley, quien, dicho sea de paso, recibió una gran ovación de los asistentes. La Congresista dijo, que por primera vez en mucho tiempo hay un verdadero esfuerzo en Washington entre senadores y representantes, de ambos partidos, para elaborar un proyecto de ley que pueda concluir sacando de las sobras a 11 millones de gente trabajadora y honesta, que ha demostrado, querer a este país y que merece vivir de una forma segura, sin el miedo de una deportación, que les de un camino hacia la ciudadanía y que pueda brindar la oportunidad a los jóvenes de ir a la universidad. Espero que los miembros de ambos partidos llevemos a la mesa una reforma justa y comprensiva, que tenga el consenso de ambos partidos para que pueda convertirse en Ley, agregó. También participó el Sr. Lauro Barajas, dirigente local del UFW, quien dijo que por todos aquellos que tienen muchos años viviendo en este país sin poder ir a visitar a sus familiares a sus países de origen, ni siquiera cuando están enfermos o fallecen, por todos aquellos que al regresar a sus países mueren en el intento de volver a cruzar la frontera, por todos aquellos que aún trabajando aquí no

cuentan con un seguro médico, por todas estas condiciones de injusticia, esta lucha no parará hasta obtener una reforma migratoria, que incluya, por supuesto, a los trabajadores del campo. Barajas informó también que en una fecha muy próxima realizaran, junto con algunos trabajadores miembros de la unión, un viaje a

Washington DC, pero que dos de ellos no tenían los recursos para hacer el viaje, por lo que pidió la ayuda de los asistentes. Habló también la Srita. Anaí Quiróz, estudiante universitaria indocumentada, quien dijo que su lucha es porque muchos más jóvenes no vean frustrados sus sueños de ir a la universidad por falta de docu-

mentos, y que todos deben unirse a esta lucha para buscar un mejor futuro. Por último, la Sra. Leticia Ontiveros, una mamá salvadoreña que fue deportada a su país natal, habló de su experiencia al llevar con ella a sus niñas al país centroamericano. La Sra.
