The Baptism of the Lord

January 10, 2016

A Letter from Our Pastor Baptism, New Life and New Opportunities Today we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. For many years, the Feast of Epiphany (last weekend) and the Feast of the Baptism were celebrated together on the same day. This celebration completed the theophany of Christ. Theophany means "a revelation of God". Christ's revealing began in prophetic form in the Old Testament, continued with his Incarnation at Christmas and then is shared with the nations on Epiphany. At the time of the Baptism, Jesus is revealed as an adult, and affirmed by the Father: "This is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased."

The esteemed liturgist Nathan Mitchell has this to say, "A Christian parish become its best self when it accepts the challenge of community. The parish community, as the real expression of a local church, cannot limit its attention to the search for justice and intimacy among its own members; it must be prepared to take up the cross, standing against evil and injustice wherever they exist in the world."

A parish is a community of baptized believers and disciples. Here at Sacred Heart of Jesus, we have our own special work and ministry. We support a parish school, which means there is never quite enough money or resources. This is a reality of Catholic school parishes. As such, we strive to be Christ's Baptism was the beginning of his public efficient: to serve all our parishioners in all their many ministry. In reflecting on that reality this weekend, we needs. But as Mr. Mitchell states, baptism calls us contemplate our own baptisms. Our baptisms (for not just to take care of ourselves, but to be the voice most of us unremembered in our infancy) also began of Christ in areas of injustice and evil, and to our public ministry. Baptism is not just a celebration challenge them wherever they flourish. of new life, but also of new discipleship. That tiny child, brought to the baptismal font by his or her As baptism points us all toward a newness of life, my parents is promised to God and committed to His prayer is for all of us to take on the challenge during service. It is not a simple superstition, but a this Year of Mercy to be that voice of Christ in our theological fact. Baptism is not an act of magic, but parish and world. The opportunity is there, and more an entrance through commitment with Christ into a profoundly realized at the dawning of a new lived disciple relationship which continues throughout year. God bless you all this year of our Lord 2016. one's life. Father Chris Renner

Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish Selected to Participate in National Study! Our parish has been selected to participate in a national study of vibrant parishes conducted by the Catholic Leadership Institute! Please help us participate by completing a 10-to-15-minute survey online. The survey will be emailed to you by [email protected] and will only be available from the week of Jan 18 through Ash Wednesday, Feb 10. The survey asks you to reflect on your own spiritual growth and provide feedback on what the parish is doing to help you grow. All responses will be confidential and the parish will only receive information about the community as a whole. We are trying to get the highest response rate possible. This information will be invaluable to me and our various ministries as we plan ahead and try to be the best disciples we can be. We will receive the results this summer, at which time we will share what we have learned with the entire parish. If we don’t have an email address for you, please send an email to [email protected] with your name so we can add you to the list. If you don’t use email, there will be a generic link that you can use to complete the survey. Plus, there will be opportunities to complete the survey after daily and Sunday Masses. You can obtain a paper copy by contacting Michelle Anderson at 303.442.6158 x112. Thank you for helping with this important project! ..
