Please see the bulletin for Mass times in English and Spanish. We will be marked with ashes and be reminded of our call to deeper conversion when we hear the words, ―Repent and believe in the Gospel.‖ How do we live out this call to repentance and conversion of heart during the season of Lent? The gospel reading on Ash Wednesday from the gospel of Matthew (Mt 6:1-6, 16-18) gives us the way to live this call more deeply in our lives. Prayer, fasting and alms giving (works of charity) are the real and practical ways for us to repent and to believe in the gospel. How you are going to respond to this call to repentance and a fuller living out of the gospel in your life this upcoming Lenten season?

MISSION STATEMENT The mission of Sacred Heart Parish is to be the spiritual focal point for the Catholic Christian community in our portion of the Diocese of Des Moines. This community:

    

Believes and proclaims that Jesus Christ is Lord; Calls its people to experience and put into practice the love of Jesus Christ; Draws its people into the social and spiritual life of the parish so that each has a sense of belonging; Seeks to help its members take on the "mind of Christ" through prayer, study and worship; Uses and returns the gifts and talents God has given; Is itself a sign calling its members to hear and respond in ministry to the spiritual and temporal needs of people within the parish and beyond.

HEALTH, HEALING & WHOLENESS - PARISH NURSING If I can be of assistance to you or a loved one on any faith and/or health concerns, please contact me. I have many resources to share with you. ~Nancy Carlson, RN [email protected]

―God knows the rhythm of my spirit and knows my heart thoughts. He is as close as breathing.‖ FEBRUARY IS HEART HEALTHY: MAKE BLOOD PRESSURE CONTROL YOUR GOAL: This American Heart Month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Million Hearts®–a national effort to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes in the United States by 2017–are encouraging Americans to know their blood pressure, and if it's high, to make control their goal. Uncontrolled blood pressure is a leading cause of heart disease and stroke. In fact, more than 67 million Americans have high blood pressure.1 People with high blood pressure are 4 times more likely to die from a stroke and 3 times more likely to die from heart disease, compared to those with normal blood pressure. High blood pressure often shows no signs or symptoms, which is why having your blood pressure checked regularly is important. It's easy to get your blood pressure checked. You can get screened at your doctor's office and drugstores or even check it yourself at home, using a home blood pressure monitor. Make Control Your Goal: If you know you have high blood pressure, take these steps to help get it under control. Ask your doctor what your blood pressure should be. Set a goal to lower your pressure with your doctor and talk about how you can reach your goal. Work with your health care team to make sure you meet that goal. Track your blood pressure over time. One way to do that is with a free wallet card from your Parish Nurse. Take your blood pressure medicine as directed. Set a timer on your phone to remember to take your medicine at the same time each day. If you are having trouble taking your medicines on time or paying for your medicines, or if you are having side effects, ask your doctor for help.  

Quit smoking—and if you don't smoke, don't start. You can find tips and resources at CDC's Smoking and Tobacco website. Reduce sodium intake. Most Americans consume too much sodium, which can raise blood pressure. Read about ways to reduce your sodium and visit the Million Hearts® Healthy Eating & Lifestyle Resource Center for heart-healthy, lower-sodium recipes, meal plans, and helpful articles. Get Your Blood Pressure Checked this Weekend after Mass!

ASH WEDNESDAY—February 10 Masses at 8 & 9:30 am (all school), 5 & 6:30 pm, Spanish Mass at 8 pm A calendar of Lenten activities will be available in the Gathering Space. Stop by and pick one up!

RCIA—RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS BECOMING CATHOLIC…WHAT IS THE RITE OF SENDING? Next Sunday at the 11:15 a.m. Mass we will celebrate the Rite of Sending with our catechumens and candidates. This rite is a special celebration provided for parishes whose catechumens will celebrate their election and whose adult candidates for reception into full communion of the Catholic Church will celebrate their recognition in a subsequent celebration at the cathedral with the bishop. This rite offers the local community the opportunity to express its approval of the catechumens and to send them forth to the celebration of election assured of the parish’s care and support. In addition, those baptized Christians who are preparing for reception into the full communion of the Catholic Church are also included in this rite, since they too will be presented to the bishop at the celebration of the rite of election for the catechumens. The rite begins after the homily with the presentation of the catechumens and affirmation by the godparents and the assembly. The catechumens will sign their name in the Book of the Elect as a sign of their new status as members of the elect. This book is then taken to the cathedral to be signed by the bishop during the Rite of Election later that afternoon. The baptized candidates are then presented and affirmed by their sponsors and the assembly of their readiness to be received into full communion of the Catholic Church. This is followed by intercessions and prayers for the catechumens and candidates. Finally the catechumens and candidates are dismissed to break open the word of God. The Mass then continues with the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Would you like to know more about becoming Catholic? Contact Casey Conner at [email protected] or 515-225-6414 ext. 309.

AROUND THE DIOCESE

 MAN-UP FEBRUARY

With Vice Chancellor Jason Kurth and 2 ―Reverts‖ who have returned to the Catholic Church. Tuesday, Catholics Come Home:

February 9th at St. Mary of Nazareth, 4600 Meredith Drive, Des Moines.

Beginning on Ash Wednesday, the Diocese of Des Moines, in conjunction with other dioceses across the country, will launch a localized program entitled ―Catholics Come Home‖. This unprecedented effort will reach out to Catholics who, for whatever reason, have wandered from the faith and are welcomed back to its practice. How will those who accept the invitation be received at each of our parishes? Jason Kurth will be welcoming all Catholic men on ―Fat Tuesday‖, giving us some specific guidance on how to respond to those who return, both as individuals and as an organization. We will also hear a couple reversion stories that are sure to inspire us during this evening of fellowship. Come to some or all of the following: 5:20 - Rosary 5:45 - Mass 6:30 - Break Bread and Fellowship 6:50 - Program (515) 984-0874 • [email protected]

 HEALING MASS

There will be a Mass of Healing on Thursday, Feb. 11 th at 6:00 p.m. at St Pius X Catholic Church at 3663 66th in Urbandale celebrated by Fr. Ubald Rugirangoga from the Diocese of Cyangugu, Rwanda. During the 1994 genocide Fr. Ubald lost over 80 members of his family and over 45,000 of his parishioners were exterminated. He escaped through the Congo on foot in the middle of the night. When he left Rwanda at that time he made a promise to his Bishop that he would return to bring healing to his people. Fr. Ubald has an amazing healing gift and his focus is on healing, forgiveness and evangelization wherever he goes. The Government of Rwanda seeks him out for advice on forgiveness and reconciliation as the country continues to rebuild after the devastation of the genocide. He continues to preach healing in Rwanda, the Congo and Burundi where it is not uncommon for crowds up to 10-80,000 will come. He has traveled all over Europe, the Holy Land and other parts of Africa. He made his first trip to the United States in 2009, at the request of Immaculée Ilibagiza, author of ―Left to Tell,‖ another genocide survivor, who currently resides in the U.S. You may learn more about Fr. Ubald and his work by going to www.frubald.com. So please come, bring a friend, and tell others to join us for this special Mass of Healing. Fr. Ubald will also say to come and pray for others who cannot be there to pray for healing. Jesus is not limited to time and space. We look forward to seeing you there.
