Our Site with Fr. Ben / Nuestro Enfoque de la Fe con Padre Ben Let us Pray for Justice

This past week we celebrated two very significant events in our parish. On Sunday, September 4th, we joined the Church in welcoming the newest Saint as Pope Francis elevated Blessed Mother Teresa of Kolkata as Saint (Mother) Teresa of Kolkata, the Saint of the gutter, and on Thursday, September 8th, the Nativity of Mary, Queen of Peace, we used our Holy Hour to join in the American Bishops call to pray for peace and an end to violence in our nation. At first glance there seems to be little that connects these two events; a celebration of a Saint who sought social justice by reaching out to the most marginalized, social outcasts in the gutters of Kolkata, India, and a nation stopping and praying for peace. But the opposite is true as pointed out by Pope Paul VI on January 1, 1972, when in his message celebrating the World Day of Peace said ‘If you want peace, work for justice’. Therefore, if we are to do more than pray for peace we must follow the example of Saint Teresa and work for justice. What does this look like in our lives? Few of us, if any, can go to the ends of the earth to reach out as Mother Teresa and her order did or as Pope Francis did, while Archbishop of Buenos Aires, when he walked the slums and offered hope. But the story is told that when college students would arrive in India to help, Mother Teresa would tell them that they needed to return home and find the Kolkata, the place of the marginalized, in their own countries. Furthermore, when asked how she could see Christ in the face of those she served she would tell them to return home and see Christ in themselves and their families. This is how she seemed to think that these students could fulfill their request to help her. So it is with each of us, we to must learn not to try to do great things but ‘only small things with great love’. In our baptisms we become disciples of Christ; called into a deep, intimate relationship with Christ, a relationship which can only be nurtured by taking time to sit quietly in the presence of our God. But as St. Mother Teresa said ‘the fruit of silence is prayer, the fruit of prayer is faith, the fruit of faith is love, the fruit of love is service, the fruit of service is peace’. By nurturing the intimate relationship we have with Christ (through active participation in Mass, Holy Hours, quiet time in prayer, etc.) we come to know and see the Christ within us. Knowing the Christ within we can see the face of Christ in the members of our families, those people who are closest to us, learning that it is not, as St. Teresa would say, in ‘how much we give, but how much love we put into giving’ and ‘kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless’. It is in the confines of our family that we can begin to remember that we belong to each other and, in that understanding, live in peace. In that peace in the family we can begin to serve one another in love, as if whatever we are doing (cooking, cleaning, studying, working, playing, etc.), we are doing in God’s love and mercy. Bringing this love into our homes allows us to see the face of Christ in our spouse, our children, our parents, our brothers and sisters. This may have been what Mother Teresa was saying to those students. Seeing Christ in the member of our families allows us to go out seeing the face of Christ in all of those we meet. When the Christ in me meets the Christ in you we recognize that we are, as the Apostle’s Creed reminds us, the Communion of Saints, and we can look for the good in each other, we can choose to live the way of peace. It is in working for justice that we find peace and in finding peace we find the face of Christ in our neighbor. As Mother Teresa said in receiving her Noble Peace Prize let ‘us meet each other with a smile, when it is difficult to smile. Smile at each other, make time for each other….’ May this be a week of smiles and a week of peace. Peace, Dcn. Ed

Twenty Fourth Sunday In Ordinary Time

September 11, 2016

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Nine years ago when I became the new principal of Sacred Heart Parish School, I had a meeting with Dr. Pete Newburn, our Pastoral Coordinator. Throughout the meeting we discussed some of the long term plans and goals for the school- one of which was the construction of a new building. We have classes in the halls, which require us to set up and take down the classroom items daily. In addition to being time consuming, this also limits the parish’s use of the hall for meetings. For the instructional benefit of our students and the benefit of the parish, a new building was deemed necessary. We began the long process of the placement and design of the building. The school hired an architect and had many meetings with Dr. Pete and the parish. However, there were many obstacles that made progress quite slow. The placement of the building was ever changing and the project was grossly underfunded. Because of these challenges and because the building was not our only necessity, I decided that we would have to do things in phases. During the next few years, I solicited donations and researched potential grants for our project. Unfortunately, I was turned down several times because we are a religious school. However, a little over three years ago I was put in touch with J.F. Shea Co., Inc., a family foundation that strongly believes in the Catholic Church and the importance of Catholic education. They are very generous donors and were hoping to contribute to many schools. With the help of the Diocese I began communicating with them, and they met with Fr. Ben and myself several times. Throughout our time together they toured the school on multiple occasions, and we discussed the school’s long term plans, our curriculum, our needs for the children, our school’s diversity and inclusion of students with special needs, our staff, and our relationship with Fr. Ben and the parish. They also inquired about our grossly underfinanced reserve funds for the building. They were looking to find the right school in which to assist and invest. About eighteen months ago, they informed us we were a school they wanted to invest in, forming a partnership with us to provide badly needed improvements to the school and helping us build our new building. Though they wanted to start some of the remodeling last summer, we had to wait until this year, due to our extremely limited space. The new building had to be completed before we can start the improvements on the older buildings. I am very proud to inform you that this past June we began construction on what will be our new middle school building, which will also include new bathrooms. The framing has started and the building should be completed by February of 2017. A new $70,000.00 playground should be done within the next week, as well. We are extremely grateful to the J.F. Shea Co., Mr. John Shea, and his family for their enormous contribution. On behalf of Sacred Heart Parish School, I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to the J.F. Shea Co., Inc., Mr. John Shea, Mr. Dan O’Melvany, and their entire family for believing in us and our mission. Words do not adequately express how enormously grateful we are. May God bless them and their families, and may God continue to bless the community of Sacred Heart. One family...Sacred Heart. Sacred Heart…one family.

Trenna Meins Directora
