PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Parent/ Teacher Interviews

There was extremely positive feedback from many teachers and parents who were happy that interviews could take place face-to-face again, after two years of COVID restrictions. This face-to-face experience was a first for some parents as well as for our early career teachers. The personal interviews also allowed parents to see their child’s classroom again and/or ask questions that they have been anxious to ask. Language teachers were also able to have interviews with parents and reported that they enjoyed being able to explain to parents what they do and what the students learn.

Funding related to the Family Occupation and Education Index (FOEI) When enrolling a child into school, parents are asked for information about their occupation and education. This information is collated and forms the Family Occupation and Education Index (FOEI) which determines each school’s equity funding for socio-economic background. Occupation information is an important component of this index. Parents who have omitted this information will receive an email requesting data for our files. NB All this Information will remain confidential, so please fill this in asap.

Promoting CREATIVITY, INNOVATION, CRITICAL THINKING & COLLABORATION in KINDY At BHPS, the kindergarten teachers run 4 literacy group sessions per week to provide multiple opportunities for targeted practice of new and old skills. The students rotate through a series of tailored hands-on activities, to suit the needs of all learners in our classrooms. Below are just a few examples of our literacy group stations this week.

Sight Word Practice

high frequency words that we need to be able to recognise instantly

Phonics Activities Learning our sounds

Writing

sentence sequencing and writing

Decoding Activities

segmenting and blending the separate phonemes in words

Handwriting with short ‘a’ CVC words

Measurement and Length in Year 2 In our Mathematics lessons this week, students have been focusing on different attributes of measurement. Students are hands on in their investigative learning, reaching deeper learning in concepts such of length, area, capacity, volume and mass.

Wellbeing in Year 4 Harmony Week Last week, Year 4 students celebrated Harmony Week with some different activities that celebrated our cultural diversity. The students answered quiz questions about their family heritage, as well as sharing their favourite foods, and researching it’s country of origin. They also completed a Harmony Day crossword to discover the hidden message that ‘everyone belongs’. Finally, students decorated their own hand to express themselves and their cultural identity.

This was a wonderful opportunity for students to celebrate the differences and similarities that we share and learn about each others heritage and traditions.

Promoting COLLABORATION, INNOVATION, CRITICAL THINKING & COLLABORATION in Stage 3 Stage 3 are off to Taronga Zoo!

As part of our Interconnections Conceptual learning this term, Stage 3 have investigated behavioural and structural adaptations and why different species adapt in order to survive. To support our learning, Stage 3 students and their teachers headed off to Taronga Zoo for the day on Wednesday where we got to see animals up close. We also attended a special workshop on Change and Adaptations with the Zoo staff in immersive classrooms. It was certainly a fun day for everyone!

Parent Tutor Reading Program

As Term 1 comes to an end it is Important to thank all those who have volunteered as part of our ‘Parent Tutor Program’ and have supported our students. It’s been wonderful to have these dedicated parents, family and community members assist our students with their reading. The students on the program have benefitted from the commitment of these wonderful volunteers. We are still in need of more volunteers in order to provide the maximum support for our students.

We spent our time planting basil seeds, lemon tree seeds, watering the garden, observing the growth of plants we planted last week, and cleaning up the area. Thank you to all of the wonderful students who have been there each week to make our garden beautiful. We look forward to a new group of students joining us in the garden next term!
