Today’s solemn feast is referred to as epiphany. The word ‘epiphany’ means ‘manifestation’ or ‘an appearance.’ Only St Mathew tells us about the Magi. We assume that there were 3 Magi. But Mathew does not tell us there were 3 - there could have been 2 or 3 or a 1000.

La Epifanía es una de las fiestas litúrgicas más antiguas, más aún que la misma Navidad. Comenzó a celebrarse en Oriente en el siglo III y en Occidente se la adoptó en el curso del IV. Epifanía, significa "manifestación", pues el Señor se reveló a los paganos en la persona de los magos. Tres misterios se han solido celebrar en esta sola fiesta, estos acontecimientos salvíficos son la adoración de los magos, el bautismo de Cristo por Juan y el primer milagro que Jesucristo, por intercesión de su madre, realizó en las bodas de Caná y que, como lo señala el evangelista Juan, fue motivo de que los discípulos creyeran en su Maestro como Dios. Para los occidentales, la Epifanía es popularmente el día de los reyes magos. En la antífona de entrada de la misa correspondiente a esta solemnidad se canta: "Ya viene el Señor del universo. En sus manos está la realeza, el poder y el imperio". El verdadero rey que debemos contemplar en esta festividad es el pequeño Jesús. Las oraciones litúrgicas se refieren a la estrella que condujo a los magos junto al Niño Divino, al que buscaban para adorarlo. Precisamente en esta adoración han visto los santos padres la aceptación de la divinidad de Jesucristo por parte de los pueblos paganos. Los magos supieron utilizar sus conocimientos-en su caso, la astronomía de su tiempo- para descubrir al Salvador, prometido por medio de Israel, a todos los hombres. El sagrado misterio de la Epifanía está referido en el evangelio de san Mateo. Al llegar los magos a Jerusalén, éstos preguntaron en la corte el paradero del "Rey de los judíos". Los maestros de la ley supieron informarles que el Mesías del Señor debía nacer en Belén, la pequeña ciudad natal de David; sin embargo fueron incapaces de ir a adorarlo junto con los extranjeros. Los magos, llegados al lugar donde estaba el niño con María su madre, ofrecieron oro, incienso y mirra. A Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar nombres que les ha atribuido la leyenda, considerándolos tres por ser triple el don presentado, según el texto evangélico. Los orientales llamaban magos a sus doctores; en lengua persa, mago significa "sacerdote". La tradición, más tarde, ha dado a estos personajes el título de reyes, como buscando destacar más aún la solemnidad del episodio que, en sí mismo, es humilde y sencillo. La Epifanía, como lo expresa la liturgia, anticipa nuestra participación en la gloria de la inmortalidad de Cristo manifestada en una naturaleza mortal como la nuestra. Es, pues, una fiesta de esperanza que prolonga la luz de Navidad. Esta solemnidad debería ser muy especialmente observada por los pueblos que, como el nuestro, no pertenecen a Israel según la sangre. En los tiempos antiguos, sólo los profetas, inspirados por Dios mismo, llegaron a vislumbrar el estupendo designio del Señor: salvar a la humanidad entera, y no exclusivamente al pueblo elegido. Con conciencia siempre creciente de la misericordia del Señor, construyamos desde hoy nuestra espiritualidad personal y comunitaria en la tolerancia y la comprensión de los que son distintos en su conducta religiosa, o proceden de pueblos y culturas diferentes a los nuestros. Sólo Dios salva: las actitudes y los valores humanos, la raza, la lengua, las costumbres, participan de este don redentor si se adecuan a la voluntad redentora de Dios, "nunca" por méritos propios. Las diversas culturas están llamadas a encarnar el evangelio de Cristo, según su genio propio, no a sustituirlo, pues es único, original y eterno.

The long western Christian tradition of 3 wise men is mostly based on the slender piece of evidence that they gave the Infant Jesus 3 gifts. But when you think about it, that proves virtually nothing. Eastern tradition gives their no as 12. It’s the symbolism of the gifts that’s important. Gold the king of metals was for the king of kings, frankincense was in recognition of Jesus’ divinity and myrrh of the death that he would undergo. In later Christian tradition, they were called kings. This interpretation came about, under the influence of an ancient OT text in Psalm 72 - ‘may the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts, may all kings fall prostrate before him ,all nations serve him’. But the notion of 3 kings went a step further, when they were named, Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthasar. This is purely on the basis of a rather spurious text found in Alexandria in the 6th century. Where the author got those names is by no means certain. He may have just made them up. Some centuries before that odd new development in Magi lore, the Empress Helena, the mother of the 1st Christian Roman Emperor, Constantine the Great, made her own contribution to Magi mythology by claiming to have had a vision that led her to the burial site of these 3 kings. She had the ostensible remains exhumed, and the skulls of the 3 kings remain to this day on display at the Cathedral in Cologne, Germany. It's all fantasy of course, on a par with The Da Vinci Code’s fast and loose fiddling with the legend of the Holy Grail. The biblical record is the only evidence that we have to go on, and if you take a good look at Mathew 2, you will conclude that this evidence is rather slim. We have to admit that we don’t know much about these men. And we don’t need to know more than what Mathew is telling us. Mathew’s gospel is the most Jewish of Christian Scriptures, and the Magi represent the entire non-Jewish, gentile world, which came to adore the Prince of Peace. Apparently, Mathew is trying to strike a universal tone in his gospel. He wanted not just Jews included, but people from all nations - the good news is for everyone. Christ is not the exclusive property of any tribe or nation or people. He belongs to us all, as we can all belong to him. And he came to us in the flesh - became like any of us. Mathew 2 truly is an epiphany for any and all who tend to think that salvation is a ‘Members Only’ club. The facts of today’s story may be vague, but the message is loud and clear. We thank God today that there’s no specially ‘chosen people’, whether they be Jews, or Christians or Hindus. Let us try to understand more deeply God’s closeness to us which is also the reason for us to be close to each other. There are no outsiders. All are called, everyone is invited. This feast of the Epiphany also reminds us to respect the search and journey other people are on. God’s revelation takes different forms and people can discover God in many ways which we may not understand. This is the day to praise the mysterious ways of God.
