CORI To facilitate the CORI reform law signed by the Governor of the Commonwealth, the Department of Criminal Information Services recently put a new CORI access system in place. This new system called iCORI requires that individuals provide the last 6 digits of their Social Security Number along with other information required on the CORI request form, The form content is sent to the Archdiocese by the Commonwealth for use in requesting CORI. The Archdiocese is certified to access the background of all clergy, seminarians, school personnel including educators, staff and volunteers, designated parish volunteers, paid parish staff and Pastoral Center staff. The Archdiocese is required to carry out the CORI process within the confines of the regulations put forth by the CORI unit.
God loves a cheerful giver.”

Robert Frost said, Two roads diverged in a wood and I...I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference." Don't we all want our children to make a difference? If you want your son/daughter to make a difference in our world and connect them in a greater capacity within their parish we have wonderful volunteer opportunities to make this happen! Our parishes are in need of your son/daughters time and talent, from participating with their musical instruments (their voice being one of them) sorting children's clothing, stacking non-perishable foods, office help, shoveling, or preparing and or serving a wonderful home cooked meal. Consider over dinner and then call and or email Dawn Alves at St. Thomas parish office, (978-5203001 or
[email protected]).
Thank You for your support!
Third Sunday of Advent In today’s Gospel John the Baptist says, “Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none. And whoever has food should do likewise…” Please share your abundance by giving a gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that those in need are able to have warmth. 5

Third Sunday of Advent
Adoration at St. John’s chapel: Mondays
Advent means "coming" When the year 1000 was about to dawn, people fled to mountains, expecting the return of Christ. When 2000 came, people feared major computer -and hence societal -- breakdowns. Neither happened. Yet both moments in history remind us of something deeper, the lesson of Advent. Advent means "coming". The Lord wants us to anticipate and prepare for His coming, not as something that we hinge on a particular date or identify with a particular calamity, but as an ordinary aspect of our daily Christian living. On the one hand, we know He is coming; on the other, we don't know when. Yet every moment is an opportunity to make that coming more central to our lives. Lord, may we welcome you daily in your Word, your Sacraments, and in all our brothers and sisters!
St John’s now has one evening of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every week on Monday from 5 pm to 9 pm. By moving to Monday we will join with the Hispanic community who for many years have had adoration from 7 – 8 pm. During the Monday evenings there will be times of prayer such as the Hispanic prayers including the rosary from 7 to 8 pm. During the other hours people are invited to bring their own prayers. People are needed to take an hour each so that someone is always there when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed. We are seeking volunteers who will commit to praying for one hour, from 5 pm to 6pm, from 6 pm to 7 pm, or from 8 pm to 9 pm. There must be at least 3 people on each hour. We encourage all Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist to consider volunteering to pray to deepen their devotion to the Lord in this sacrament.
FAMILY GIVING As we all plan to buy presents for family and friends and to decorate our homes for Christmas we’d like to highlight some of the ways we can give to those in need in our parish and we can help to decorate our church for the great celebration of Christ’s coming among us this Christmas.
Youth Group
St. John's and St. Thomas have a youth group. The group meets from 7 PM to 9 PM on Tuesdays in the lower church at St. John's. Teens currently in high school or college are invited to share their faith and discover a community of peers through dinner, prayer, and social and spiritual activities. For parents seeking more information, or those willing to be added to a list of adult resources for the group, please email
[email protected].
Our Advent Giving Trees have tags with simple gift suggestions. It also has been our tradition that parishioners have made donations in memory of loved ones for flowers for the church. This year we also need to replace some basic decorations. Forms and envelopes for those who are willing to help are available in today’s bulletin as well as at the back of church.
WE REMEMBER WHERE WE ARE
Please join us for coffee in the Lower Church Hall on Sundays. (After the 10 AM Mass ONLY)
Let us all give thought to where we are! We are at the holy sacrifice of the Mass and have come here to pray. Please remember to TURN OFF your cell phones entirely. Please do not use your cell phone for text messages or cell phone games during Mass. Your respect for God and others helps everyone TURN ON to the Lord.
We would like to thank Central Bakery in Peabody for donating all the pastries for our coffee hour every week. Please be sure to visit their bakery at 48 Walnut Street in Peabody.
Thank You! 6

Third Sunday of Advent
An Invitation from Cardinal Seán O’Malley:
“We want you to know that you are part of our family.” Our archbishop, Cardinal Seán, wrote the following words to all Catholics. I am asking you to read it and to share this message with your family and friends, especially those who do not go to Mass and participate in the life of the church. Christmas is a wonderful opportunity for people to come to church. We would love to see all of our family there! Fr. John Some of you have drifted away from the Church and have been waiting for a good time to return. I pray that you will consider this the time to join us on our faith journey toward Heaven. The sacred teachings of the Church offer guidance, direction and meaning in a world where so many cannot find their way. Our faith points us to Jesus, who is “the Way, the Truth and the Life. Some of you have made a choice to stop coming to Church because you have been hurt by the actions of someone in the Church or because of a difficulty with a Church teaching. From my first day as archbishop of Boston and perhaps for the rest of my days, I will always be asking the forgiveness of all those who have been hurt by the actions, or inaction, of people and leaders in the Church. Please do not let those experiences and memories separate you from the love of Christ and of our Catholic family and prevent you from receiving the grace of the sacraments. . . . A reporter [once] asked me what I would say to Catholics who do not attend Mass because they disagree with, or have questions about, Church teaching. I answered that our teaching does not change because people disagree with it; our faith comes from Christ’s own teaching in the Scriptures and through the teaching authority of the Church throughout the ages. We recognize, however, that many struggle to reconcile Church teaching with social norms in American society today; to them, we say that we want to engage in a meaningful conversation with you. We want you to know that you are part of our family. We want to assure you that God loves you and waits for you at Sunday Mass. The best place to begin a conversation is by gathering with the family of believers in the worshiping community. To those who consider themselves unwelcome at Mass because of some irregularity or moral struggle, please know that you are always loved by God and the Catholic community desires your presence with us. We are all brothers and sisters in Christ. An inability to fulfill all aspects of Christian worship or to receive Communion should not keep you from Mass. In fact, the habit of being faithful to the Sunday obligation can provide the actual grace, if you cooperate with it, to give you the strength to overcome current obstacles and find paths of reconciliation. We stand ready to help you. PLEASE JOIN US FOR CHRISTMAS MASS! CHRISTMAS EVE: Dec. 24: 4:00 PM: St John’s Church, St John’s School, St Thomas Church 10:00 PM: St John’s Church (for both parishes) CHRISTMAS DAY: Dec. 25: 10:00 AM: St John’s Church, St Thomas Church 11:30 AM: St John’s Church, (Spanish) 7:00 PM: St Thomas Church, (Brazilian)

Third Sunday of Advent
Estamos dispuestos a ayudarle.
