JULY 1, 2012 MASSES FOR THE LIVING AND DECEASED One special way to pray for loved ones, living or deceased, is to have a Mass offered for them at our church or chapel. Visit or contact the rectory office when you wish to reserve Masses. THE HHS MANDATE On January 20, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a mandate that virtually all private health care plans must cover sterilization, drugs that cause early abortions, and contraception. The rule offered an exemption for “religious employers” that was narrow. It offered no protection to the vast majority of religious organizations and individuals. On February 10, the Administration made this rule final, and said that it would give a “compromise” to religious organizations, but offered only vague promises of future “accommodations”. The threat from this mandate still remains. Religious institutions- including our own Catholic hospitals and agencies- - will still be forced to pay for and promote “services” that violate their convictions. Cardinal Dolan has called this mandate “an unprecedented intrusion” upon religious freedom, and should be opposed not just by Catholic but by all Americans. Do we really want our government to force churches and religions to violate their beliefs? Think about it. CREMAINS A frequent question to priests seems to be: “What do I do with the cremains of a deceased loved one?” This question often surfaces after an extended period marking the death of the deceased loved one. The committee on the Liturgy of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops reminds us: “The remains of cremated bodies should be entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium; they may also be buried in a common grave in a cemetery. The practices of scattering cremated remains on the sea, from the air, or on the ground or keeping cremated remains in the home of a relative or friend of the deceased are not the reverent dispositions that the church requires.” Cemetery niches are reasonably priced at Archdiocesan Cemeteries or at a parish cemetery such as St. Raymond’s in the Bronx. However, the 1983 Code of Canon Law in canon 1176 states: “The Church earnestly recommends that the pious custom of burying the bodies of the dead be observed, it does not, however, forbid cremation unless it has been chosen for reason which are contrary to Christian teaching.” A proper burial in a Catholic cemetery is part of our Christian faith; cremation is permitted; displaying and storing of the urn of a deceased beloved is totally inappropriate.

CHURCH OF ST. STEPHEN / OUR LADY OF THE SCAPULAR OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL On Saturday, July 16 we honor Mary under the title Our Lady of Mount Carmel. On Mount Carmel, associated with the prophet Elijah, some hermits established a monastery in the twelfth century. They became the first Carmelites. On July 16, 1251. Mary appeared in a vision to Saint Simon Stock, the sixth general of the Carmelite Order, and gave him the brown scapular. Images of Our Lady of Mount Carmel often show her with Jesus in her arms, both holding scapulars. This is a day to pray for Carmelite priests and religious whose prayers and ministries help sustain the Church. SAINT OF THE WEEK

Tuesday, July 3rd Saint Thomas, Apostle

In the Gospel of the day we hear of Thomas’s encounter with the risen Lord. Thomas was not present when Jesus appeared in the locked upper room on that first Easter day. Now, in spite of the testimony of the others, he is filled with doubt and grief. The image of the dead Jesus overwhelms him. He remembers the wounded body and exclaims that unless he sees the mark of the nails and the great gash in his side, he will not believe that the person they saw is Jesus. When Jesus appears again — a week later — he turns to Thomas, and invites him to examine the wounds, to touch them, and to believe. And Thomas does believe: “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28). Jesus is risen, alive with glorious new life; but the wounds of Crucifixion are not erased. In fact, it is by his wounds that his apostles are able to recognize him. The Gospel ends with words that are addressed directly to us: “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed” (20:29). SHARE THE BLESSINGS OF YOUR MARRIAGE!!! Los Partidarios del mandato HHS recientemente anunciaron (que virtualmente todos los planes privados del cuidado médico deben cubrir la esterilización, las drogas que causan abortos y la contracepción) la defienden como aplicación a la “salud de las mujeres”. Pero este mandato no está por promover la salud de las mujeres dándoles píldoras del control de la natalidad. En su lugar, es una tentativa a forzar a los creyentes e instituciones religiosas a aceptar las ideas falsas que la fertilidad es una amenaza, el embarazo una enfermedad, y los niños una carga. Esto está por encima de la libertad religiosa de todos los americanos y de los derechos sagrados, de nuestra constitución, o de cualquier iglesia para definir su propia enseñanza y ministerio, libres de la interferencia del gobierno. ¿Realmente alguien piensa que sea aceptable que el gobierno federal le diga a la iglesia lo que debe creer? ¡Piénselo- es importante! CREMACION Una pregunta frecuente a los sacerdotes es: “Qué debo hacer con los restos de una cremación de un difunto que amo?” Esta pregunta surge a menudo después de un período de tiempo de la muerte del difunto que amas. JULY 1, 2012 NUESTRA SEÑORA DEL MONTE CARMELO El sábado, 16 de Julio honramos a María bajo el título Nuestra Señora del Monte Carmelo. Algunos ermitaños asociados al profeta Elías, establecieron el monasterio en el siglo doce convirtiéndose en los primeros Carmelitas. El 16 de Julio del 1251, María se le apareció a San Simon Stock, sexto comandante de la Orden Carmelita, entregándole el escapulario marrón. Imágenes de La virgen del Monte Carmelo con frecuencia son vistas con Jesús en sus brazos, ambos con sus escapularios en mano. Un día como hoy, es para orar por la Orden de sacerdotes Carmelita y religiosos, y con sus oraciones y ministerios ayudarán a sostener la Iglesia. SANTO DEL MES Viernes, 3 de Julio Santo Tomas, Apóstol En el Evangelio del día escuchamos el encuentro entre Tomás y el Señor resucitado. Tomas no estuvo presente cuando Jesús apareció en el aposento alto aquel primer día de Pascua. Tomás a pesar del testimonio de los demás, estaba lleno de dudas y aflicción. La idea de la muerte de Jesús lo abrumaba. Recordaba el cuerpo herido y dijo que a no ser que viera las marcas de los clavos y la herida en su costado, no creería que la persona que ellos habían visto era Jesús. Nuevamente - una semana más tarde - Jesús se dirigió a Tomas, invitándolo a que examinara sus heridas, a que las tocara, y a que creyera. Tomás creyó diciendo: “¡Mi Dios y mi Señor!” (Juan 20: 28). Jesús había resucitado, a una vida gloriosa; pero las heridas de la crucifixión no se le habían borrado. Fue a través de sus heridas que los apóstoles lo habían reconocido. El Evangelio termina con las palabras en que Jesús se dirigió a nosotros: “Bendecidos aquellos que creen sin haber visto” COMPARTA LAS BENDICIONES DE SU MATRIMONIO!!! Cada año, las Caridades Católicas ayuda a unos 2,700 niños de edad pre-escolar a través de una intervención temprana de educación especial, además de asistir a unos 1,400 individuos con enfermedades mentales en su propio domicilio.
