Works of charity become an ongoing legacy. To ensure that the legacy will go entirely to the purposes intended when you remember the parish in your will, be sure to specify that it is for the charitable works and maintenance of Our Lady of the Scapular and St. Stephen’s Church or the Chapel of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. A charitable gift annuity is also an excellent way to make a meaningful gift to our parish while enjoying income and tax benefits that can help enhance your financial well-being. if you are interested in learning about the Archdiocese’s Charitable Gift Annuity Program to benefit our parish, please call 212-371-1011, ext. 3318. All inquiries are confidential. CHECKS PAYABLE TO ST. STEPHEN’S CHURCH Each week we receive checks in the offertory collection from parishioners that are made payable to the Chapel / Church of the Sacred Hearts. The bank where we deposit the checks has informed us that in the future these checks may be returned to the parish and our account could be subject to bank fees. Please make all checks payable to St. Stephen’s Church to avoid this possible expense to the parish. STEWARDSHIP God is the giver of all gifts. The gifts of time, talent and treasure with which we are blessed are to be shared. As a community of faith we offer portions of our gifts to the church and to people who are in need. We give thanks to God and to you for your financial support of $3,787.00 Sunday, January 24, 2010.

JANUARY 31, 2010 HAITIAN RELIEF DONATION We are grateful to the many parishioners who contributed to the Haitian Relief Fund over the past two weeks. The total amount donated is $4,724.00. Parishioners who wish to make donations may do so by using the collection boxes in the church and chapel or by putting checks with a note in the memo of the check marked Haitian Relief Fund in the collection basket BLESSING OF THROATS We know very little about Saint Blaise except that he was Bishop of Sebate, Armenia, in the fourth century, and that he gave his life for Christ. Like many saints, he became a favorite in spite of the scarcity of information about him. Some say that he was a physician before he became a bishop. We bless throats on his memorial because of a story that he cured a little boy who was choking to death on a fishbone. The blessing of throats is not just for throat ailments, but for protection from all diseases; and it is not just for the sick, but for everyone. The blessing of throats will be offered on Wednesday, February 3rd at the 8:00am and 12:15pm Masses at the church and the 5:00pm Mass at the chapel. It is given by using two crossed candles that are tied with a red ribbon, honoring the martyrdom of Saint Blaise. When a priest or deacon is giving the blessing, he makes the sign of the cross over the person and says: “Through the intercession of Saint Blaise Bishop and Martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.” WORLD MARRIAGE DAY Family Life/ Respect Life Office cordially invites you, your family and friends to celebrate World Marriage Day 2010. The Longest Married Couple in the Archdiocese of NY will be honored on Sunday, February 14, 2010 at the 10:15am Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. PARISH OF OUR LADY OF THE SCAPULAR/ST. STEPHEN THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD Tuesday, February 2 On this day Christ’s faithful people, with candles in their hands, go out to meet the Lord and to acclaim him with Simeon, who recognized Christ as “a light to reveal God to the nations.” “They should therefore be taught to walk as children of the light in their entire way of life, because they have a duty to show the light of Christ to all by acting in the works that they do as lighted lamps.” (Ceremonial of Bishops, 241) According to the Hebrew law (see Leviticus 12:18), a woman remained ritually unclean for 40 days after the birth of a child. At the end of that time, she was to make an offering in the temple, and thus become clean --- that is, be restored to full participation in the life of the community. Another law required that every firstborn son be presented in the temple, and that a monetary offering be made on his behalf. Both these requirements were fulfilled when Mary and Joseph presented the child Jesus in the temple 40 days after his birth (February 2 is exactly 40 days after December 25).

The feast has been celebrated since the fourth century, as Egeria attests in her diary of pilgrimage to the Holy Land in about 381-384 A.D. She kept a diary of her travels, which includes detailed accounts of the liturgy we have. Like most of our liturgies, the feast of the Presentation of the Lord has undergone its share of changes over the centuries. Until 1969, the feast was called the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Now it takes its name from the other law fulfilled that day, the Presentation of the Lord. In the East, this feast is know as the “Encounter” or “Meeting”--- that is, the meeting of Jesus with Simeon. Candles blessed on that day will be available for purchase at the church and chapel. POSITIONS AVAILABLE The U.S. Census Bureau will be hiring New Yorkers to work in their own communities over the coming months in preparation for the 2010 Census. Clerical and field positions available, census takers, crew leaders, and leader assistants, recruiting assistants and census clerks. Please call for more information 866-861-2010.
