14TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ July 3, 2016

MADISON’S DOWNTOWN CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OBRAS CORPORALES DE MISERICORDIA

Prayer for The Year of Mercy

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: "If you knew the gift of God!"

OBRAS ESPIRITUALES DE MISERICORDIA

You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God.

CORPORAL WORKS OF MERCY

Pope Francis

Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

 FEATURED NEWS  Mass Schedule for Monday, July 4th We will follow our holiday schedule on Monday. Only one Mass will be celebrated in our parish that day—at 9:00 am at Holy Redeemer Church. There will be no 12:10 pm Mass nor 5:15 pm Mass that day. The parish office will be closed Monday, July 4th.

All Summer Blong You know the cliche, “What’s true for you is not true for me.” It’s a tired, empty emblem of relativism. But then, how do we explain what a truth is? Find out in the new blog, What makes truth true? Also, Deacon Ray Lukesic writes his second blog in our series. Don’t miss it! And please feel free to enter the discussion by posting your comments on the blog site. This summer, cultivate truth! Go to: blog.isthmuscatholic.org (Category: A Moment of Truth)

Helpers Needed for Mass at Capitol Lakes Marc Laudonio Director of Evangelization and Catechesis [email protected]

Amber Cerrato Director of Religious Education [email protected]

One or two volunteers are needed to help prepare the altar for the 10:00 am Mass at Capitol Lakes on Tuesdays, and then to put things away after Mass. Suggested times would be 9:30-9:45 am to prepare the altar and then 11:05-11:20 am to clear things after Mass. If more than one person volunteers, a rotation could be established. For additional details, and to sign-up, please call Lorraine Falkner at 608-630-8344. We are sorry an incorrect phone number was listed in last weekend’s bulletin.

Candle Cooperation Requested Leona Rane Alice Buechner Maria Culligan Parish Secretaries [email protected]

We appreciate your concern to keep the vigil lights filled in the candle racks at Holy Redeemer. Unfortunately that assistance has resulted in several cracked and broken blue glass candle holders. We ask your cooperation in allowing the authorized people only to refill the empty candle holders. Thank you.

Dear Friends in Christ: This is the third in a series of bulletin letters reflecting on our identity as a bilingual parish. Two weeks ago, I described our parish as not only using two languages, but as having two rather different populations with different sets of needs. Last week, I wrote about our plan for reorganizing our Parish Pastoral Council into one body with two “houses” in which the pastoral program in each language could be discussed. This week and next, my subject will be the progress we have already made toward being a single parish community and the way forward for further progress in this area.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 3, 2016

MASS SCHEDULE

continued from page 2 Of course, the source and summit of parish life is the sacramental life – first of all the Mass, with the other Sacraments and prayer. When people come to Mother Church, they want to pray in the language they learned from their own mother – their “mother tongue.” Bilingual celebrations have their place, but almost no one prefers a regular diet of them. It might make life easier if people did! But that is not the reality. Thanks be the God, we have ample opportunity for Sunday Mass in both languages. The Sacraments of Penance, Baptism, Matrimony and Anointing of the Sick are regularly celebrated in each language – with bilingual Baptisms and weddings at the request of particular families. The Mass at which the Sacrament of Confirmation is conferred has bilingual elements, since most of those being confirmed are from Hispanic families. In the sacramental realm, there are two places where we come together easily and enthusiastically across the language barrier – (1) the joint procession that we try to have each year on Corpus Christi from St. Patrick to Holy Redeemer, and (2) the Adoration Chapel, which has a similar number of scheduled adorers coming from each language group. Isn’t it interesting (and edifying) that in both cases, it is Christ present in the Eucharist that is the source and sign of our unity! In the matter of Mass and the Sacraments, there is one anomaly that has been on my mind for a long time. On any given Sunday, we have more Spanish- than English-speaking people coming to Mass. (According to the October count in 2015, we had over 500 people weekly at the English Masses, and over 900 at Masses in Spanish.) Yet during the week, we have at least 10 English Masses, with a single Spanish Mass only on the Fridays of Lent. (The Friday afternoon Mass is usually bilingual, but attracts few people.) There was no malice at work in putting this arrangement into place. When our three predecessor parishes were first linked, they all had only English Masses on weekdays. There was a natural desire to preserve those, and to have Mass in English in both our parish churches each day. But as time has gone on, this is less and less appropriate to the reality of our parish. I have consulted Fr. José Luis about this situation, and it was discussed at our last Pastoral Council meeting. We are going to begin with a modest adjustment. As of the end of July, we will discontinue the 5:15 Mass on Fridays and add a 7:00 pm Mass in Spanish. We will see what the response is. If 10 people come, it will be evident that we do not have much need for weekday Masses in Spanish. If 100 people come, my conclusion will be that we should have more weekday Masses in Spanish. Our goal will be to do the best we can for the all the people of the parish.

Msgr. Kevin D. Holmes

The Cathedral Parish of St. Raphael was formed on July 1, 2008 by the merger of three historic parishes that were established within a few blocks of the Capitol Square during the nineteenth century. The buildings of two of those historic parishes – Holy Redeemer and St. Patrick – provide the current facilities for the Cathedral Parish. Both churches are in use daily. The parish rectory is at the Holy Redeemer site, while the offices are at the St. Patrick location. Old St. Raphael Cathedral was destroyed by arson in 2005. Bishop Morlino has announced his intention to erect a new cathedral church on the same site (at West Main and Fairchild). Until then, an outdoor Way of the Cross adorns that site. If this is your parish home and you have not yet registered as a member of the Cathedral Parish, please do one of the following: • ask Msgr. Holmes or an usher for a Registration Form today; or • contact the parish office ([email protected] or 2575000) to request a Registration Form; or • register online at www.isthmuscatholic.org.
