Build Background Help students use their experience with change. Build interest by asking questions such as the following: ¿Alguna vez sus padres tomaron una decisión que haya afectado sus vidas? ¿Cómo reaccionaron? ¿Es bueno o malo cambiar? Tell students that this story is realistic fiction about a girl, Lian, who moves to the United States from China.

Introduce the Text Guide students through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions: Pages 2–3: Have students read the first two sentences on page 2 (“Estoy bajo el cielo de Estados Unidos”, le escribió Lian a su amiga Chen-chi. “Es azul, como el de China, pero no del mismo azul.”) Suggested language: Lian le escribe a su amiga que vive en China. ¿Qué piensan que quiere decir Lian cuando dice que el cielo no es del mismo azul? Have students read silently while you listen to individual students read aloud. Support their understanding of the text as needed. Remind students to use the Visualize Strategy and to use texts clues as they read. Have them tell what Lian discovers about change and people everywhere.

Discuss and Revisit the Text Personal Response

Choices for Further Support • Fluency Invite students to participate in a readers’ theater using a passage from the text. Remind them to use facial expressions and voice inflections to demonstrate the emotions of the scene. • Comprehension Based on your observations of the students’ reading and discussion, revisit parts of the text to clarify or extend comprehension. Remind students to go back to the text to support their ideas. • Phonics/Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and word parts, using examples from the text. Remind students that many words in English have Latin roots, prefixes, and/or suffixes. For example, the word computación on page 4 includes the Latin root computatio, which means computation or calculation. Explain that dictionaries often provide the etymology, or history, of words.
