Iverson ES Parent Bulletin From the Administration Hello, Iverson Eagles! We have had a wonderful start to our school year. Our Reading Rangers are off and running, and we're proud that we have already celebrated over 89 Reading Ranger Graduations, the most in our zone! I am proud of all of our students and their dedication to growing as readers, and I'm so grateful to you, our families, for your support! While we continue our focus on academics, I also want to ensure that our students are growing socially and becoming strong, kind, and confident. This year we are putting the spotlight on anti-bullying behavior. We will work hard to educate our students in solving problems that include teasing, conflict, mean moments, and bullying. We also will study our new motto: "Don't stand by. Stand up. Stand strong. Stand together!" We will encourage the students to stand up to others who may try to hurt their feelings, and to stand up for their peers as well. I encourage you to talk to your children on a regular basis about what is happening socially at school, and always keep in touch with our staff with any ideas, questions, or concerns. As always, our staff is so grateful to have the best community in the district. We enjoy seeing your children each day and continue to have a passion for making Iverson the best! We look forward to seeing you often!

GATE & TAGS News Third Grade ALM: We began the year learning about the engineering process by working in small groups and individually to complete several STEM challenges. Some of these challenges included making a paper airplane that flew the farthest, creating a bridge out of one piece of paper that would hold the most weight, and constructing the tallest free standing Rapunzel tower out of paper. Now we are working on our Dig It! Unit, which is a higher level supplement unit to go along with the Earth Material Unit the students are doing in Humanities. The abstract concept for this unit is change. We will be studying how the earth changes by focusing on natural resources, renewable energy resources, erosion, and pollution to create our own preservation park. Fourth Grade ALM: We began the year learning about the engineering process by working in small groups and individually to complete several STEM challenges. Some of these challenges included making a hoop airplane that flew the farthest, putting together a puzzle in the fastest time without talking, and constructing a working paper helicopter. We are now focusing on the Nevada State Symbols which is a large part of the fourth grade social studies curriculum. We learned how to navigate through a WebQuest to find answers about Nevada and its symbols. We are currently using that information to complete several projects from a Project Menu Board to show our understanding and use higher level thinking skills. Fifth Grade: We began the year reviewing the 16 Habits of Mind that all successful people use no matter what field they are in. On September 17 th, we focused on learning about the Constitution for Constitution Day. We completed a treasure hunt of facts using the website constitutionfacts.com. We also watched a movie about the events leading up to the Constitutional Convention, the events involved in the convention, and the results of the convention. Ask your child what they know about our Constitution. We are currently working on our American History Unit by learning about the struggles of the Colonial Americans and creating our own colonies.

As the first month of school comes to an end Kindergarteners have been learning so much already. We’ve spent a lot of time learning and practicing procedures throughout the school. We have been working on identifying letter names and sounds through ABC Bootcamp and can see a lot of growth in our students already. In addition to learning our alphabet through ABC Bootcamp our students are beginning to learn their sight words, and read a book through pictures. Students are learning about characters, settings, and the beginning, middle, and end of a story. These skills will help the students with reading when they start to connect pictures to the words. In math we are learning about numbers and counting. We are also learning about quantities and writing numerals. We look forward to seeing the growth continue. Thank you for all your hard work and help at home. 

We are off to a great start in first grade! We have been learning about Reading Rangers. We have had over 30 graduations so far and we have more graduates each day! Please make sure you are reading at least 20 minutes a day with your student. In math, we have been learning about number bonds. We are becoming experts at finding the missing addend in number sentences. Please work with your student on mastering addition and subtraction facts. We are working on writing complete sentences that have a capital letter at the beginning and ending punctuation. We are learning to write sequenced narrative stories. Please work with your child on completing the story in the homework packet every week. First graders need a lot of practice in writing great paragraphs! We look forward to seeing what our students will learn in first grade!

Second grade is off to a great start with Reading Rangers. Students are earning a couple hundred stars each week. Keep reading so that even more stars can be earned. We have started the year off with Narrative writing and will continue to add details and adjectives to our writing to make it more interesting. Please make sure to read and write daily. In math we are learning about place value. Be sure to practice math facts each day. Below are some useful resources to help students practice skills learned in class; these can be accessed from home are Reading Eggs, SumDog, and Scootpad. Be sure to check your child’s classroom blog to stay up to date on what’s going on throughout the school year.

Intermediate Grades Third Grade News It has been a great start to the 2015-2016 school year! Our third grade students are actively involved throughout the school. In reading, we are working on using context clues, analyzing story elements, and creating inferences. The third grade students have read over 2 million words this year collectively. We appreciate all that came to the Reading Ranger Rodeo and celebrated the student’s accomplishments. Please encourage your student to read for 20 minutes nightly. In mathematics, we are using a program called Engage New York. The students are asked to perform hand’s- on activities, number talks, and daily math review. The students can utilize Scootpad at home to practice the many mathematical concepts taught. We are encouraging the students to use models to show their work. In Science, we are working on heredity, food chains, and ecosystems. Students have been using a variety of resources when learning about these science aspects. Science is mainly taught in Humanities; however we are integrating into the classroom as much as possible. In writing, we are working on writing informatively. Students are being asked to read about a topic, and then they must go through the writing process to inform the reader. We have been really focusing on having good topic sentences so that we hook our reader. In Social Studies, we are working on rules and laws. We are really getting into government, and the effect that it has on our society. The history of Las Vegas is another area we are diving into to get us ready for our field trip to the Discovery Museum. More details will be released to your student when the trip nears closer. Fourth Grade News Jiminy Cricket!!! Fourth grade is up and running!!! We can’t believe that a month of school has gone by!!! In Reading Rangers we are reading, earning stars and badges, and already have a number of graduations in September!!! Please ask your child what their ZPD is and what that means. It’s also important that they are reading every evening for at least 30 minutes. Cuddle up and read together!!! Place value concepts have been the name of the game in math. We are moving on into multiplication of multi-digit numbers. PLEASE be practicing the multiplication and division facts through 12 with your child every night. Math is going to get very difficult without knowing those. Make it a game and have fun with it. Don’t try to study and memorize every fact at once. Break it down and just practice the 2’s, then the 3’s, etc. We are so happy to have your children in our classes. Let’s have a great 2015-2016 school year!!! Special Education News Our special education department has had an exciting beginning to the school year! Our students have all gotten off to a great start working on their academic and social goals. Our students have also enjoyed participating in Iverson's reading rangers challenge while focusing on personal reading goals. We look forward to next week when Sue Grundfest and her team of dog trainers and furry friends will visit. We will be learning about pet therapy and how to be "cool, not cruel" with the Love Dogs.

Fifth Grade News We’ve had an exciting and busy start to our year in fifth grade! In math we jumped into decimal place value, including in-depth understanding of how each place value position relates to the others and using that knowledge to compare and round decimal numbers. We have now moved into adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing with decimals. In reading, we started the year by building a solid foundation and routines for the year. This includes setting expectations for Reading Rangers and learning how to respond to and summarize what we read. We are now focusing on literature, including identifying theme and making inferences to “read between the lines” beyond what the author actually tells us. In writing, students started the year writing letters to their future selves, analyzing their own strengths and struggles and setting goals for the year. We have moved into writing personal narratives with a specific focus and purpose. It has been a fun way to get to know one another better and bring students’ personal experiences to light! We have begun a geography unit as well, learning map skills and beginning to study the U.S. regions and the 50 states. We are excited for the coming year and for all the learning and growing we will do!

Library News The library has been a busy place so far this year! We just had our Book Fair and it was a huge success! We are beginning our 2nd Annual Pumpkin Book Character Contest. Ask your child what character they will be creating in their classroom! You will be able to pick a winner on the library website very soon. 4th and 5th graders are also preparing for Battle of the Books. This is where groups of students are reading 8 books together and then will battle other Iverson teams, Jeopardy style, until we have one winning team. The winning team will then go to the Regional Championship Battle to compete against other elementary schools! I can’t wait to see them battle it out at the end of March. Art News We are off to a great start in ART! All grade levels have worked on art lessons that incorporate shape, pattern, and color. First and second graders have taken a “dot for a walk” to learn the importance of line. Third graders are completing their cubism portraits after learning about Pablo Picasso. The fourth and fifth graders are working on Zen tangles which are like “yoga for the brain.” Pattern and shape is emphasized with the knowledge that if a “mistake” is made, it becomes part of the design. The fourth graders are working on “crazy hair” with the fifth graders working on a design that has special significance to them. Kindergarten is, well, kindergarten. We are working on basic skills such as how to hold a pencil and learning how to hold and manipulate scissors correctly. The students draw every time they come to art. It is amazing how quickly they are learning… I have great hopes and expectations for them as the year progresses. Because of the 7 day rotation, I will be offering Art Club for interested fifth graders. Information will be forthcoming. I hope to begin Art Club the middle of October. Please check the Art Blog to see examples of student artwork. Thank you. PE News The year is off to a great start! Students have been working on cup stacking skills in PE class. If you want to purchase cups to practice a catalog went home a few weeks ago. T-shirts are ordered and should be here the first week of October. I hope you like them. We DESPERATELY need help with our morning exercise program. I need adults to circle the students and encourage them to exercise. Please e-mail me at [email protected] if you can volunteer any morning from 8:45-8:55. It is only 10 minutes. Please help!!! We have had amazing discussions about sugar and what it is doing to our bodies. The biggest problem is sugary sodas and juices. Water is the best choice for our students. Send water to school for lunch!!!

Music News This year we are off to great start in Music. The students are working hard at learning and reviewing The Star-Spangled Banner. On September 11th, Iverson students took part in a nation-wide event in the singing of The National Anthem. They did a wonderful job and helped show a wonderful sense of pride and unity. The fifth grade students are practicing for their upcoming program which will be held at the end of October. Also, for fourth and fifth grade students who would like to purchase a recorder, information will be coming home soon. Humanities We have had a great start in Humanities this year. This year the Primary Humanities Class will be filled with science experiments! In Kindergarten, we are learning about animals two by two. Students are learning the difference between guppies and goldfish along with land snails and water snails. We also learned about items that sank and float. First grade is learning about balance and motion. Some of their experiments include balancing a paper crawfish, triangle, and arc in different ways with clothes pins. After that experiment, we actually balanced a pencil on its lead by using aluminum wire and clothes pins. Finally, second grade is learning about air and weather. Students experiment with air by using a straw and blowing on a piece of paper, feather, Styrofoam ball, and cotton ball. Next, students used an air pump to blow up a balloon and observe how the air expands it. Afterwards, students experimented with compressed air using two syringes connected by a tube. Third grade is studying techniques for observing things that would otherwise be difficult to see. In this unit students will explore the techniques of rubbing carbon printing, chromatography and mirror imagery. Soon third graders will begin to study Earth Materials. We will investigate a selection of the most common rocks and minerals that make up the earth’s crust and learn some techniques used by geologists to identify them. Fourth graders have begun studying the Human body. In this unit students will investigate the basic structural systems of their bodies which include the skeleton, joints, and muscles and how these systems work together to provide movement and coordination. Fifth graders started learning about variables and how scientists use critical thinking skills, close observation and measurement to conduct experiments. Soon we will start our study of the earth’s environments. In this unit we will investigate several different plants and animals to discover the environments that support their well- being and attempt to determine the optimum environments for some of the organisms.

¡Hola, Aguilitas de Iverson! Hemos tenido un maravilloso comienzo este año escolar. Nuestros Reading Rangers ya están en funcionamiento, y estamos orgullosos de que ya hemos celebrado más de 89 Graduaciones, ¡la mayor cantidad en nuestra zona! Estoy orgullosa de todos nuestros estudiantes y su dedicación a crecer como lectores, estoy tan agradecida con ustedes, nuestras familias, por todo su apoyo. Mientras continuamos en nuestro enfoque académico, también quiero asegurarme de que nuestros estudiantes estén creciendo socialmente, haciéndose más fuertes, más amables y que tengan más confianza en sí mismos. Este año estamos enfocando nuestra atención en el comportamiento de antibullying. GATE & TAGS News Tercer Año ALM: Comenzamos el año aprendiendo sobre el proceso de ingeniería, trabajando en pequeños grupos e individualmente para completar varios desafíos de STEM (siglas en inglés.) Algunos de estos retos incluyen hacer un avión de papel que volara más lejos, crear un puente de una sola pieza de papel que pueda sostener la mayor cantidad de peso, y la construcción de la torre de Rapunzel más alta hecha de papel. Ahora estamos trabajando en nuestra unidad de Dig It! (¡Excávalo!) es una unidad suplemento, de nivel superior para ir junto con la Unidad sobre materiales de tierra que los alumnos ya están considerando en clase de Humanidades. El concepto abstracto para esta unidad es el cambio. Vamos a estudiar los cambios de la tierra, centrándose en los recursos naturales, los recursos energéticos renovables, la erosión y la contaminación para crear nuestro propio parque de conservación. Cuarto Año ALM: Comenzamos el año aprendiendo sobre el proceso de ingeniería, trabajando en pequeños grupos e individualmente para completar varios desafíos de STEM (siglas en inglés.) Algunos de estos retos incluyeron hacer un avión de aro que volara más lejos, armar un rompecabezas en menos tiempo sin hablar, y la construcción de un helicóptero de papel que pueda volar. Ahora nos estamos centrando en los símbolos del estado de Nevada, que es una gran parte de los estudios sociales del currículo de cuarto grado. Hemos aprendido a navegar a través del programa WebQuest para encontrar respuestas acerca de Nevada y sus símbolos. Actualmente estamos utilizando esa información para completar varios proyectos con la ayuda de un programa por computadora llamado Project Menu Board y así mostrar nuestra comprensión en el uso de habilidades de pensamiento de alto nivel. Quinto Grado: Comenzamos el año revisando los 16 hábitos de la mente que todas las personas de que han logrado el éxito utilizan no importa en qué campo que se encuentren. El 17 de septiembre, nos centramos en aprender sobre la Constitución para el Día de la Constitución.

A medida que culmina este primer mes de escuela, los de kínder han estado aprendiendo bastante. Hemos pasado mucho tiempo aprendiendo y practicando los procedimientos que se deben seguir en la escuela. Hemos estado trabajando en identificar las letras y sus sonidos mediante un ABC Bootcamp (campo de entrenamiento para el abecedario) y ya hemos visto mucho crecimiento. Además de estar aprendiendo nuestras letras por medio de este ABC Bootcamp, nuestros estudiantes están aprendiendo su lista de palabras, y leyendo libros por medio de utilizar las ilustraciones. Los estudiantes están aprendiendo acerca de los personajes, escenarios y el principio, medio y final de una historia. Estas habilidades ayudarán a los estudiantes en su la lectura cuando empiecen a conectar imágenes con palabras. En matemáticas, estamos aprendiendo los números y a contar. También estamos aprendiendo sobre las cantidades y escribiendo números. Esperamos ver crecimiento continuo. Agradecemos todo su arduo trabajo y ayuda que brindan en casa.

Vamos a un buen comienzo en primer año. Hemos estado aprendiendo sobre el programa de Reading Rangers. Ya hemos tenido más de 30 graduaciones y todavía hay más por graduarse. Intermediate Grades Third Grade News Ha sido un gran comienzo de este año escolar 2015-2016. Nuestros estudiantes de tercer año han estado muy activos en actividades escolares. En lectura estamos trabajando en utilizar pistas de contexto, analizando elementos de texto, y creando inferencias. En conjunto, todos los estudiantes de tercer grado ya han leído 2 millones de palabras. Apreciamos que hayan asistido a la noche de Rodeo de Reading Rangers para celebrar los logros de nuestros estudiantes. Por favor anime a su estudiante a leer por 20 minutos cada noche. En matemáticas, estamos utilizando un programa llamado Engage New York. Se requiere que los estudiantes trabajen en actividades, conversaciones sobre números, así como un repaso de matemáticas a diario. Los estudiantes pueden utilizar el programa de Scootpad en casa para practicar muchos de los conceptos de matemáticas que se les enseñó en clase. Fourth Grade News

¡Jiminy Cricket! Cuarto año ya está en transcurso. No podemos creer que ha pasado un mes de escuela. En el Programa de Reading Rangers estamos leyendo, adquiriendo estrellas y placas, y ya tenemos varias graduaciones para el mes de septiembre. Por favor pregunte a su hijo/a cual es su ZPD y lo que esto significa. Es muy importante que lean todas las noches por lo menos 30 minutos. Acurrúquese y lean juntos. Los conceptos de valor han sido el nombre del juego en matemáticas. Avanzaremos hacia la multiplicación de múltiples dígitos. Por favor practique con su hijo/a las tablas de multiplicación, hasta el 12, cada noche. Las matemáticas serán muy difíciles si no se saben las tablas. Haga de ello un juego divertido. No trate de memorizar todas las tablas a la vez. Hágalo por partes, por ejemplo, primero las tablas del 2 luego las del 3, etc. Estamos muy contentos por tener sus hijos en nuestros salones. Todos nuestros estudiantes ya están trabajando en sus objetivos académicos y sociales. Nuestros estudiantes también han disfrutado de participar en el programa de lectura de Reading Rangers mientras se enfocan en sus propias metas de lectura. Disfrutamos de la visita de Sue Grundfest y su equipo de entrenadores de perros y amigos peludos. Aprendimoss sobre la terapia con mascotas y el “no ser crueles " con los perritos de Love Dogs.

Fifth Grade News Hemos tenido un comienzo emocionante y ocupado en quinto grado. En matemáticas nos metimos de lleno en valor decimal de números, incluyendo la comprensión en profundidad de cómo cada posición de valor se relaciona con las demás y utilizamos ese conocimiento para comparar los números decimales y redondearlos. Ahora hemos pasado a sumar, restar, multiplicar y dividir con decimales. En lectura, empezamos el año mediante la construcción de una base sólida de rutinas para el año. Esto incluye el establecimiento de expectativas para la lectura en el programa de Reading Rangers y aprender a cómo responder y resumir lo que leemos. Ahora nos estamos centrando en la literatura, incluyendo la identificación del tema y el hacer inferencias o "leer entre líneas" ver más allá de lo que el autor en realidad nos dice. Biblioteca

Hemos estado muy ocupados en la biblioteca este año. Acabamos de tener nuestra primera feria de libros y fue un éxito. Estamos comenzando nuestro segundo concurso anual de Pumpkin Book Character (personaje de libros en calabaza.) Pregunte a su hijo sobre qué personaje estarán creando en su salón. Próximamente podrá escoger al ganador por medio de la página web de la biblioteca. Los de quinto y cuarto grado también se están preparando para la batalla de los libros. Es donde grupos de estudiantes leen 8 libros juntos y luego hay una competencia entre equipos de Iverson, al estilo Jeopardy, hasta que haya un ganador. El equipo ganador entonces puede competir con otras escuelas en el Campeonato Regional. No puedo esperar para verlos en este enfrentamiento a finales de marzo.

Arte

Hemos tenido un gran comienzo en ARTE! Todos los grados han trabajado en lecciones de arte que incorporan forma, diseño y color. Los de primer y segundo han llevado a un "punto a dar un paseo" para aprender la importancia de la línea. Los estudiantes de tercer grado están completando sus retratos de cubismo después de aprender sobre Pablo Picasso. El cuarto y quinto grado están trabajando en enredos Zen que son como "yoga para el cerebro." El patrón y la forma se enfatizan sabiendo que si se hace un "error", se convierte en parte del diseño. Los estudiantes de cuarto grado están trabajando en "pelo loco" con los alumnos de quinto grado trabajando en un diseño que tiene un significado especial para ellos. Kinder, pues es Kinder. Los estudiantes dibujan cada vez que vienen a arte. Es increíble lo rápido que están aprendiendo ... Tengo esperanzas y expectativas para ellos, a medida que avanza el año. Los estudiantes han estado trabajando en apilar vasos en la clase de PE. Hace unas semanas se envió un catálogo a casa si es que le gustaría comprar un juego de vasos para practicar. El último día para ordenar en línea es el 2 de Octubre. Las camisetas ya se ordenaron y deberían estar aquí la primer semana de Octubre. Espero que les gusten. Necesitamos MUCHA ayuda con el programa de ejercicio por la mañana. Necesito de algunos adultos que animen a los estudiantes a hacer ejercicio. Por favor envíeme un correo electrónico a [ mailto:[email protected] ][email protected] si se puede hacer voluntario cualquier día de 8:45-8:55. Solo son 10 minutos. ¡Por favor ayúdenme! Hemos tenido una plática muy amena sobre los azucares y como estas pueden afectar nuestro cuerpo. El problema más grandes son los jugos y bebidas gaseosas que continúen demasiada azúcar. El agua es la mejor opción para nuestros estudiantes. Envíen agua en el almuerzo de sus hijos.

Música Este año hemos tenido un gran comienzo. Los estudiantes están trabajando arduamente en aprender y repasar el himno nacional Star Spangled Banner. El 11 de septiembre, los estudiantes de Iverson tomaron parte en entonar este himno junto al entero país. Hicieron un buen trabajo y esto ayudo a demostrar su gran orgullo y unidad. Los estudiantes de quinto grado están practicando para su próximo programa que tendrá lugar a finales de octubre. Además, para los estudiantes de cuarto y quinto grado que desean comprar una flauta se enviara información sobre esto próximamente. Humanities

Este año en la clase de Humanidades primarias estaremos trabajando en experimentos de ciencia. En kínder estamos aprendiendo sobre animales, de dos en dos. Los estudiantes están aprendiendo la diferencia entre pececitos y peces dorados junto con los caracoles de tierra y caracoles de agua. También aprendimos acerca de las cosas que se hunden y las que flotan. Primer grado está aprendiendo sobre el equilibrio y movimiento. Algunos de sus experimentos incluyen equilibrar un cangrejo de papel, un triángulo, y un arco de diferentes maneras con los ganchos para tender ropa. Después de ese experimento, equilibramos un lápiz de la punta mediante el uso de pasadores de alambre, aluminio y ganchos de tender ropa. Por último, el segundo grado está aprendiendo sobre el aire y el clima. Los estudiantes experimentan con aire usando un popote para soplar un pedazo de papel, una pluma, una bola de nieve seca y una bola de algodón. Enseguida, los estudiantes utilizan una bomba de aire para inflar un globo y observar cómo el aire se expande. Posteriormente, los estudiantes experimentaron con aire comprimido utilizando dos jeringas conectadas por un tubo. Hemos tenido un gran comienzo en humanidades este año. Los de tercer grado han estado estudiando técnicas sobre como observar cosas que de otra forma serían difíciles de ver. En esta unidad los estudiantes exploraran técnicas sobre imprenta por medio de carbón, cromatografía y el reflejo de imágenes. Muy pronto, los de tercero comenzaran a estudiar materiales de la tierra. Estaremos investigando una selección de rocas y minerales más comunes que componen la superficie de la tierra y aprenderemos algunas técnicas que utilizan los geólogos para identificarlas. Los de cuarto año comenzaran a estudiar el cuerpo humano. En esta unidad, los estudiantes investigaran la estructura básica del sistema de sus cuerpos, lo que incluye el esqueleto, las coyunturas, los músculos y cómo es que estos sistemas trabajan juntos para proporcionar movimiento y coordinación. Los estudiantes del quinto grado comenzaron a aprender acerca de situaciones variables y cómo los científicos usan habilidades de pensamiento crítico, una estrecha observación y medición para realizar experimentos. En esta unidad vamos a investigar una variedad de plantas y diferentes animales para descubrir los entornos que apoyan su bienestar y tratar de determinar los entornos óptimos para algunos de estos organismos.
