SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 18, 2015 ONE FAMILY UNDER GOD

The number of refugees from the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America continues to escalate as citizens seek to escape violence, war, poverty, famine, persecution, and human trafficking. According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), “One need only think of places like Syria or the Central African Republic to find examples of forced migration that are occurring on an epic scale. In Latin America today the outbreak in violence has resulted in the forced migration of thousands of unaccompanied migrant children who are fleeing their crime ridden neighborhoods for a place of safety.” The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported in June 2014 that for the first time since the post-World War II era, there were 51.2 million refugees worldwide, an increase of six million in comparison to the 45.2 million refugees reported in 2012. This considerable increase was driven mainly by the war in Syria, which at the end of last year had forced 2.5 million people into becoming refugees and made 6.5 million internally displaced. “We are seeing here the immense costs of not ending wars, of failing to resolve or prevent conflict,” said UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres in a statement. “Peace is today dangerously in deficit. Humanitarians can help as a palliative, but political solutions are vitally needed. Without this, the alarming levels of conflict and the mass suffering that is reflected in these figures will continue.” In his message about migrants and refugees in September, Pope Francis said: “The mission of the Church, herself a pilgrim in the world and the Mother of all, is thus to love Jesus Christ, to adore and love him, particularly in the poorest and most abandoned; among these are certainly migrants and refugees, who are trying to escape difficult living conditions and dangers of every kind.” The Pope also stated that such migration gives rise to suspicion and hostility, even in ecclesial communities, prior to any knowledge of the migrants’ lives or their stories of persecution and destitution. “In such cases, suspicion and prejudice conflict with the biblical commandment of welcoming with respect and solidarity the stranger in need.” To respond to this crisis the Holy Father urges solidarity with migrants and refugees accompanied by the courage and creativity necessary to develop, on a world-wide level, a more just and equitable financial and economic order, as well as an increasing commitment to peace, the indispensable condition for all authentic progress. In an effort to bring attention to the impact of migration and the importance of family in our daily lives, the Church will observe National Week of Migration (January 4-10) under the theme, “We are on family under God.” “This reminder is particularly important when dealing with the migration phenomenon, as family members are too often separated from one another,” stated the USCCB.

El número de refugiados del Medio Oriente, África y América Latina sigue ascendiendo a medida que las personas tratan de escapar de la violencia, la guerra, la pobreza, el hambre, la persecución y el tráfico humano. Según la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Estados Unidos (USCCB), “Sólo hay que pensar en lugares como Siria o la Republica Centroafricana para encontrar ejemplos de migración forzosa que se están dando a escala épica. Hoy día en América Latina, la erupción de violencia ha resultado en la migración forzosa de miles de niños que viajan solos y que huyen del crimen que reina en sus vecindarios y buscan un lugar seguro”. La Oficina del Alto Comisionado para Refugiados de las Naciones Unidas (UNHCR) informó en junio de 2014 por primera vez en la era de después de la segunda Guerra Mundial, había 51.2 millones de refugiados en todo el mundo, un aumento de seis millones de los 45.2 millones reportados en 2012. Este considerable aumento fue consecuencia principalmente de la guerra en Siria que, al final del año había forzado a 2.5 millones de personas a convertirse en refugiados y había desplazado internamente a 6.5 millones. “Estamos viendo aquí los costos astronómicos de no terminar las guerras, de nuestro fracaso en resolver o prevenir el conflicto”, dijo el Alto Comisionado para Refugiados Antonio Guterres en una declaración. “La paz hoy día está peligrosamente en déficit. En su mensaje sobre migrantes y refugiados en septiembre, el Papa Francisco dijo: “La misión de la Iglesia, peregrina en el mundo y Madre de todos, es amar a Jesucristo, adorarle y amarle, particularmente en los más pobres y abandonados; entre éstos, se encuentran ciertamente los migrantes y refugiados, que tratan de escapar de condiciones de vida difíciles y de peligros de todo tipo”. El Papa también dijo que tal migración da paso a la sospecha y la hostilidad, incluso en las comunidades eclesiales antes de cualquier conocimiento sobre las vidas de los migrantes o sus historias de persecución y dolor. “En tales casos, la sospecha y el prejuicio entran en conflicto con el mandato bíblico de dar la bienvenida al extranjero necesitado con respeto y solidaridad”. Para responder a esta crisis el Santo Padre llama a la solidaridad con los migrantes y refugiados junto con el valor y la creatividad necesaria para desarrollar, a nivel mundial, un orden económico más justo y equitativo, así como un mayor compromiso con la paz, condición indispensable para todo progreso auténtico. En un esfuerzo por llamar la atención sobre el impacto de la migración y la importancia de la familia en nuestra vida diaria, la Iglesia observará la Semana Nacional de las Migraciones (del 4 al 10 de enero), bajo el tema, “Somos una familia en Dios”. Este recuerdo es especialmente importante cuando se trata del fenómeno de la inmigración, ya que los miembros de la familia a menudo están separados”, dijo USCCB. Parish Meeting to Elect New Parish Trustees St. Paul’s will have an open meeting on Monday, January 26th at 7:00 pm in the Rectory to elect two Parish Trustees. All parishioners 18 and older are invited to the meeting. All active parishioners (25 years or older) are eligible to be elected Parish Trustees. What is a Parish Trustee? Every Parish of the Diocese of Wilmington is incorporated according to the incorporation laws of the State (Delaware or Maryland) as a non-profit, religious corporation. In the Diocese of Wilmington the directors of the parish corporation are the five trustees who act on behalf of the civil parish corporation. The Bishop of the Diocese, the Chancellor, and the Pastor of the Parish are exofficio members of the corporation. Two lay trustees are to be elected each year as members of the parish corporation. What is the Role of the Trustees? Lay Trustees assist the pastor in his oversight of parish management and review all major decisions about the funds and property of the parish. Their consultation is required for: (a) the acquisition, lease, and sale of real estate and other major assets; (b) execution of contracts involving major financial commitment; (c) borrowing money and incurring financial liability. The Trustees are also kept informed of the financial and legal status of the parish. Generally, the trustees do not have regular meetings but are convened by the pastor as circumstances require (minimally once a year in January). It is not the role of the trustees to be involved in the ordinary day to day business administration of the parish. The pastor, authorized by canon law, is to conduct the day to day temporal business affairs of the parish in consultation and with the advice of the Parish Council, and in particular with the Parish Finance Council. Reunión Parroquial para Elegir Nuevos Síndicos Parroquiales (Trustees) San Pablo tendrá una reunión abierta el lunes, 26 de enero a las 7:00 pm en la Rectoría para elegir a dos Síndicos Parroquiales. Todos los feligreses de 18 años y mayor están invitados a la reunión. Todos los feligreses activos (25 años y mayor) están elegibles a ser elegidos como Síndicos Parroquiales. ¿Qué es Síndico Parroquial? Todas las parroquias de la Diócesis de Wilmington están incorporadas de acuerdo a las leyes de la incorporación del Estado (Delaware o Maryland) como una organización sin fines de lucro, corporación religiosa. En la Diócesis de Wilmington los directores de la corporación parroquial son los cinco síndicos que actúan en nombre de la corporación civil parroquial. Sustaining Hope for the Future Capital Campaign Thank you for your generous support of the Sustaining Hope for the Future campaign. We have pledges totaling $92,428 from 84 parishioners. Our parish goal is $146,500 over 3 years. The Diocese will receive 60% and St. Paul’s 40% of all funds. The funds allocated to St. Paul’s will be used to repair our church roof, repair ceiling leaks, plaster and paint inside the church, add additional security lights and cameras to our property and assist with the payment of our debts. All parishioners are invited to participate in this very important campaign by making a pledge today. Please review the campaign materials you received, pray about your response, and consider a gift to this campaign. Please return your pledge cards as soon as possible by placing them in the Sunday collection basket or returning them to the rectory. Additional pledge cards are available in the back of the church.
