All Hallow’s Even (Holy Evening) When you think of Halloween, what comes to mind? For a lot of people, Halloween has become synonymous with candy, costumes, scary stuff, witches, ghosts and pumpkins. But do you know the Christian connection to the holiday? The true origins of Halloween lie with the ancient Celtic tribes who lived in Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Brittany. For the Celts, November 1 marked the beginning of a new year and the coming of winter. The night before the New Year, they celebrated the festival of Samhain, Lord of the Dead. During this festival, Celts believed the souls of the dead - including ghosts, goblins and witches - returned to mingle with the living. In order to scare away the evil spirits, people would wear masks and light bonfires. When the Romans conquered the Celts, they added their own touches to the Samhain festival, such as making centerpieces out of apples and nuts for Pomona, the Roman goddess of the orchards. The Romans also bobbed for apples and drank cider - traditions which may sound familiar to you. But where does the Christian aspect of the holiday come into play? In 835, Pope Gregory IV moved the celebration for all the martyrs (later all saints) from May 13 to November 1. The night before became known as All Hallow’s Even or ―holy evening.‖ Eventually the name was shortened to the current Halloween. On November 2, the Church celebrates All Souls Day. The purpose of these feasts is to remember those who have died, whether they are officially recognized by the Church as saints or not. It is a celebration of the ―communion of saints,‖ which reminds us that the Church is not bound by space or time. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that through the communion of saints ―a perennial link of charity exists between the faithful who have already reached their heavenly home, those who are expiating their sins in purgatory and those who are still pilgrims on earth. Between them there is an abundant exchange of all good things‖ (#1475).

homeless. At one stop the police showed up and arrested one of our friends. We maintained our smiles and prayers all the while. Towards the end of the day we wanted to make one last stop with our brothers and sisters on Pease Street. This was our last stop, and we closed for the day by feeding probably twenty people. The most memorable stop of the day happened earlier when we met Charles (not his real name) near the train tracks. My heart was touched by this individual. He showed us some math problems he was trying to solve. We were truly with a genius, but not only that we were with Jesus. I don’t think I will ever be the same person from this day forward. I have become a different and better person not because my me, but because it was a privilege to meet him.

Eventos de la Comunidad Hispana Zaqueo, la mirada de Jesús le salvó El episodio de Zaqueo –el recaudador de impuestos—es uno de los más bellos que nos narran los Evangelios. Aquel personaje acude por curiosidad a conocer al Rabí de Galilea, ya muy famoso. En un momento, dado su mirada se cruza con la del Maestro. Y ya queda todo dicho. Una mirada de Jesús es un camino infalible e indeleble para la conversión. Tal vez, es bueno que todos, en estos días, recordemos aquel momento especial de nuestras vidas en el que nos sentimos mirados por Jesús de Nazaret. Y este es el contenido principal de este Domingo 31 del Tiempo Ordinario que leemos hoy. EL REGALO DEL PERDÓN, UNA EXPERIENCIA MARAVILLOSA Por José María Martín OSA Dios, amigo de la vida. Las lecturas de este domingo son una preciosa descripción del comportamiento de Dios con la persona humana. Nos dicen que Dios ama entrañablemente todo lo que existe, porque su aliento de vida está en todas las cosas. Dios es el Amigo de la vida, que cuida de todo, ésta es la enseñanza del capítulo 11 del Libro de la Sabiduría. Necesitamos misericordia, amor, cobijo y perdón. El hombre es un ser necesitado..... El pecado es nuestra miseria. Ante tal consideración, cualquier otra forma de miseria humana pierde todo su peso. Es más, el reconocimiento de esta verdad despierta en el hombre una sed insaciable de misericordia de Dios, de amor y de salvación. El pecado precipita a la muerte. Por eso la conversión y la fe evitan el riesgo de la muerte. La conversión comienza por el cambio de mentalidad, al cual sigue un comportamiento también en consecuencia. Ese cambio de mentalidad nos conduce a salir hacia fuera, hacia más allá de nosotros mismos. Dios nos perdona, porque somos ―suyos‖ y El es amigo de la vida, es decir desea nuestra felicidad. El Salmo 144 subraya precisamente la misericordia de Dios: ―El Señor es clemente y misericordioso, lento a la cólera y rico en piedad‖. El vacío de Zaqueo y la acogida de Jesús. El episodio de la conversión de Zaqueo se encuentra en el itinerario de Jesús hacia Jerusalén y sólo lo encontramos narrado por el evangelio de Lucas. Jericó es como la puerta para la ciudad en la que aguarda la consumación de la historia de la salvación. La misión de Jesús se cumple mediante la acogida de los pecadores. Jesús es el salvador de los que estaban perdidos...El relato nos muestra la pedagogía de Dios hacia aquellos que actúan mal. Dios es paciente y compasivo, lento a la ira y rico en misericordia, corrige lentamente, respeta los ritmos y siempre busca la vida y la reconciliación. Sabemos que Jesús siempre estuvo en contra de todo tipo de injusticia. Pero no condenó a la persona injusta, sino que buscó su transformación de una manera muy pedagógica. Zaqueo era un hombre excluido, juzgado y condenado por el sistema religioso, y despreciado por todo el pueblo. Un ser humano con apariencia de dios, un hombre acomodado y aparentemente sin problemas, pero con un drama tremendo que le impedía vivir libremente y ser feliz. Un hombre con profundos complejos de inferioridad, que pretendía ocultar con la acumulación de riqueza, para sentirse importante. Un hombre pequeño que se subía a los árboles para estar por encima de los demás. No obstante era un hombre que no había aplastado totalmente su conciencia humana y que, hastiado de su vaciedad, buscaba tímidamente a Jesús de Nazaret, en quien veía una luz de esperanza

para su vida. La actitud de Jesús es sorprendente: sale al encuentro de Zaqueo y le regala su amor, le mira, le habla, desea hospedarse en su casa, quiere compartir su propia miseria y su pecado (robo, fraude, corrupción). La actitud de Jesús es la que produce la conversión que se realiza en la libertad. Las críticas no se hicieron esperar, esta vez no sólo de la élite religiosa, sino de todo el pueblo. Las personas que se atreven a cuestionar lo incuestionable y a romper los tabúes de las sociedades, suelen ser vistas como peligrosas. Con su actitud para con los pecadores ponía en peligro el sistema religioso, sin embargo lo que hizo Jesús fue mostrar el rostro misericordioso de Dios. Como personas religiosas, miembros de una comunidad cristiana, podríamos preguntarnos cuál es nuestra actitud ante estas personas que, como Zaqueo, viven en un mundo tan lleno de privilegios como tan efímero, engañoso y deshumanizante. Todo lo que le pasa a Zaqueo es fruto del amor de Dios. Es la manifestación de la misericordia y la compasión de Dios, que perdona y da la fuerza para cambiar. De esta manera la vida se reconstruye y me puedo liberar de todas las ataduras que me esclavizan, puedo entregarlo todo, sin miedos y sin restricciones. Lo aceptó como persona y se atrevió a creer en lo bueno que podía dar este hombre rico e injusto, menospreciado por todos. No lo rechazó como ser humano ni le reprochó su actitud injusta, sino que le brindó su amistad y le manifestó su deseo de quedarse en su casa, es decir, de entrar en su mundo, en su vida y hacerse su amigo. Zaqueo comprendió que ante sus ojos había una oportunidad única que tal vez nunca volvería a tener. Por eso sin pensarlo dos veces bajó rápido, y recibió a Jesús en su casa con alegría. Se trató de un acto de fe y de un voto de confianza en Jesús. Zaqueo le creyó a Jesús, y le abrió las puertas de su corazón para que entrara y transformara su vida. Fue un acto espontáneo en el que dejó a un lado la voluntad de poder y el delirio de grandeza, y se dejó conducir por su sed humana de una amistad sincera, realidad que difícilmente se encuentra en el oscuro mundo de los negocios sucios. La alegría de Zaqueo es manifestación de que el Reino de Dios se empezaba a gestar en él. Dios nos llama a la conversión. Hoy, Zaqueo soy yo. Pongámonos en el sitio de Zaqueo Jesús nos está llamando también a nosotros a la conversión, nos está invitando a que cambiemos radicalmente nuestra vida. No se lo neguemos, no se lo impidamos. El Señor nos propone unirnos a El, ser sus discípulos y, a ejemplo de Zaqueo, ser capaces de despojarnos de todo lo que no nos permite vivir auténticamente como cristianos. Esta misma experiencia es la de muchos otros testigos de Jesús que, mirados por El, se convirtieron, renació su dignidad, y recuperaron la vida. Aceptemos la mirada de Jesús, dejemos que El se tropiece con nosotros en el camino e invitémoslo a nuestra casa para que El pueda sanar nuestras heridas y reconfortar nuestro corazón. No tengamos miedo, dejémonos seducir por el Señor, por el maestro, para confesar nuestras mentiras, arrepentirnos, expresar nuestra necesidad de ser justos, devolver lo que le hemos quitado al otro… No dudemos, Jesús nos dará la fuerza de su perdón. El Señor está con nosotros para que experimentemos su amor. El ya nos ha perdonado, por eso es posible la conversión.
